Review The Eagle Has Landed [1977] / ITV DVD:This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat-or murder him if need be. The Eagle Has Landed has a large, great cast and a director, John Sturges, who's been down this road of ensemble action before (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) make this project exciting if not as memorable as Sturges's more famous works. The weak ending doesn't help. - Tom Keogh This 1976 adventure story set in World War II concerns a Nazi plot to kidnap Churchill from his retreat-or murder him if need be. Review British War DVD Collection [1958] / Warner Home Video:The four films presented in The British War Collection unapologetically embody the dogged spirit and pluck of an embattled nation during its greatest crisis; that they also represent the zenith of post-war British cinema is a testament to both their quality and veracity. First in chronological order is The Cruel Sea (1953), a rivetingly faithful adaptation of Nicholas Monsarrat's gripping novel (itself semi-autobiographical) in which Jack Hawkins is the epitome of determined professionalism in the face of ever-present disaster. Moving from sea to air, The Dam Busters (1954) uses the same documentary-style approach to storytelling, though combined here with the more overt patriotic appeal of Eric Coates' famous march theme. A similar never-say-die spirit pervades both The Colditz Story (1955)-an authentic retelling of PR Reid's narrative-and Ice Cold in Alex (1958). Coincidentally or not, both films star the always indomitable John Mills. In Colditz, Mills heads a distinguished ensemble of British thespians as they attempt to escape from the infamous fortress, while in Alex he and his marvellously tight-knit cast journey painstakingly towards what is probably the most famous glass of lager in the world. On the DVDs: The British War Collection comes in a neat fold-out package with postcard-style cards for each movie. All four discs are presented in their original aspect ratios (Cruel Sea and Dam Busters, 1. 33:1; Alex and Colditz, 1. 66:1). [+]

Review A Time For Drunken Horses [2001] / Tartan Video:Bahman Gobadi's intense quasi-documentary A Time for Drunken Horses deals with the lives of a young family of Kurds on the Iran/Iraq border. Their father has died in a landmine incident while smuggling and young Ayoub leaves school in an attempt to feed his siblings and find money for surgery on his crippled brother Madi. Things go from bad to worse: a marriage contract is reneged upon and we last see Ayoub and Madi trudging with a mule drugged against the cold with liquor through the snows of the high border hills as wolves howl in the distance. A few scenes remind us that this poverty is not an accident, but part of a system of actual and cultural oppression: soldiers frisk a group of children and confiscate exercise books; Ayoub spends money on a picture of a Western body-builder for Madi; they and their sisters spend evenings listening to a crackling transistor radio. There is a bracing purity to some of these images of stark suffering which shames much mo! re obviously artistic or popular film-making. On the DVD: A Time for Drunken Horses has trailers but no more elaborate special features. The DVD is presented in 1. 85:1 anamorphic widescreen and has simple but effective Dolby Stereo sound. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Lawrence Of Arabia [1962] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:In 1962 Lawrence of Arabia scooped another seven Oscars for David Lean and crew after his previous epic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, had performed exactly the same feat a few years earlier. Supported in this Great War desert adventure by a superb cast including Alex Guinness, Jack Hawkins and Omar Sharif, Peter O'Toole gives a complex, star-making performance as the enigmatic TE Lawrence. The magnificent action and vast desert panoramas were captured in luminous 70mm by Cinematographer Freddie Young, here beginning a partnership with Lean that continued through Dr Zhivago (1965) and Ryan's Daughter (1970). Yet what made the film truly outstanding was Robert (A Man For All Seasons) Bolt's literate screenplay, marking the beginning of yet another ongoing collaboration with Lean. The final partnership established was between director and French composer Maurice Jarre, who won one of the Oscars and scored all Lean's remaining films, up to and including A Passage to India in 1984. Fully restored in 1989, this complete version of Lean's masterpiece remains one of cinema's all-time classic visions. -Gary S Dalkin On the DVD: This vast movie is spread leisurely across two discs, with Maurice Jarre's overture standing in as intermission music for the first track of disc two. But the clarity of the anamorphic widescreen picture and Dolby 5. 1 soundtrack justify the decision not to cram the whole thing onto one side of a disc. The movie has never looked nor sounded better than here: the desert landscapes are incredibly detailed, with the tiny nomadic figures in the far distance clearly visible on the small screen; the remastered soundtrack, too, is a joy. [+]
Thanks are due to Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg who supervised (and financed) the restoration of the picture in 1989; on disc two Spielberg chats about why David Lean is his favourite director, and why Lawrence had such a profound influence on him both as a child and as a filmmaker (he regularly re-watches the movie before starting any new project). Other features include an excellent and exhaustive "making-of" documentary with contributions from surviving cast and crew (an avuncular Omar Sharif is particularly entertaining as he reminisces about meeting the hawk-like Lean for the first time), some contemporary featurettes designed to promote the movie and a DVD-ROM facility. The extra features are good-especially the documentary-but the breathtaking quality of both anamorphic picture and digital sound are what make this DVD package a triumph. -Mark Walker.
