Review Operation Petticoat [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Republic Pictures:

Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy, Operation Petticoat, stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the Navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards' best, involving a torpedo and a jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. During the Second World War the Germans put many of the Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) who had proved consistent escapees together in a maximum security fortress, the very name of which became a legend. Based on the book by Colditz escapee Major Pat Reid, The Colditz Story (1957) documents the further, sometimes successful, escape attempts of these extraordinarily brave, resourceful and indomitable men. Starring John Mills, Eric Portman, Bryan Forbes and Anton Diffring, and co-written and directed by Guy Hamilton, who later made The Battle of Britain (1969), this is a sober, even-handed account, that is gripping and informative, yet not without humour. Sterling performances from the cast of stalwart actors adds up to a British cinema classic. Such is the fascination of Colditz that in 1972-3 the BBC made a very successful drama series staring Jack Hedley, Bernard Hempton, Robert Wagner and David McCallum, while in 2000 Channel 4 offered a superb three-part documentary, Escape from Colditz. In contrast to the semi-documentary feel of The Colditz Story David Lean's classic The Bridge on the River Kwai, from the same year, is an epic and powerful account of POW life in barbaric Japanese prison camps. -Gary S. Review The Beast [1988] / Uca:

Originally a stage play, The Beast is a war story full of powerful symbolism. Its simple premise is that a lost Russian tank is hunted by a band of Mujahedeen guerrillas, and neither side will give up. It's the second year of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan (1981). Taj (Steven Bauer) is eager to prove himself in life, while tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) feels he has nothing left to prove. As explained by a chanced-upon Holy Man, Taj (the rebel's Khan) is David, while the tank is symbolically Goliath or The Beast. The one person in the middle of all this is the gunner Koverchenko (Jason Patric) who experiences more than just a crisis of faith. With the tank lost in the Valley of the Jackal and pursued by a wild pack, it soon becomes hard to tell the three protagonists apart. Bloody and shocking, this is a tautly directed film by Kevin Reynolds (who went on to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld) once you get over the Russians having American accents On the DVD: the 1. 85:1 presentation beautifully shows off the wide-angle photography of never endingly blue skies. A three-channel surround is good enough to pick up the echoing canyon walls. [+]
The extras are half-hearted, however, with just filmographies and, almost as an afterthought, trailers for two other movies. -Paul Tonks.
