Review The Sons Of Katie Elder [1965] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

John Wayne recovered from his first bout of cancer to appear in 1965's The Sons of Katie Elder as the brother of Dean Martin, Earl Holliman and Michael Anderson Jr. All four characters are wandering souls prone to trouble, but after the funeral of their frontier mother, they set out to avenge her death. Directed by Henry Hathaway (Wayne's director on True Grit), the film moves like a conventional, latter-day Western, with good performances from Wayne and Martin, who'd already costarred with the Duke in Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo. There's also nice support from Dennis Hopper (who had a legendary conflict with Hathaway on this film), Strother Martin and George Kennedy. -Tom Keogh.

Review Alexander Nevsky [1938] / Eureka Entertainment:

Alexander Nevsky, Sergei Eisenstein's landmark tale of Russia thwarting the German invasion of the 13th century, was wildly popular with home-grown audiences back in 1938, quite intentionally so, given the prevailing Nazi geopolitical advancement and destruction at the time. It can still be viewed as a masterful use of imagery and music, with the "Battle on the Ice" sequence as the obvious highlight. Unfortunately, the rest of the film pales in comparison. A great score by Prokofiev was effectively integrated by the Russian filmmaker, but stands on its own merit as well. -Bill Desowitz, Amazon. com.

Review A Town Like Alice [1956] / ITV DVD:

Although made in 1956, A Town Like Alice has remained enduringly effective and affecting. Based on Nevil Shute's novel the story revolves around a romance set against the unlikely backdrop of a forced march through the jungles of Malaysia by British prisoners-mostly women and children-captured by the invading forces of Japan. The title is a reference to the homesick yearnings of Australian soldier Joe Harman, played by Peter Finch. He forms a bond with one of the female prisoners, Jean Paget (Virginia McKenna), and their travails are depicted with a remarkable subtlety and commendable lack of corniness. It's a minor classic. On the DVD: The black-and-white picture is presented in 4:3 format, with English subtitles if required. Extra features include a 25-minute "making of" documentary, a collection of behind-the-scenes photographs, potted biographies of the cast and crew and the original trailer. -Andrew Mueller.

Review Appointment In London [1952] / DD Home Entertainment DD.20677:

In 1943, the RAF Bomber Offensive against Nazi Germany is at its height. Night after night, the young crews of the Lancasters of RAF Bomber Command fly some of the most dangerous missions of the entire war. Their chances of surviving their tour of duty - just one in three. Wing Commander Tim Mason (Dirk Bogarde) has flown 89 missions. He has just one more combat raid to fly before he is rotated to the safety of a desk job. But confidence in Mason is waning amongst his superior officers. They think he's no longer fit to carry on and ground him prematurely. Mason defies orders and takes off on one last dangerous raid. As he flies into the bursting shrapnel and web of searchlights over his target, Mason believes he is certain to face court martial on his return, but the outcome of his actions are very different to those he believes he faces. Often compared with 'Angels One Five' for its realism (veterans of Bomber Command were consulted during the production at every stage), this is one of the finest films ever made about wartime Bomber Command and its young crews who were asked to fly in the face of insurmountable odds.

Review Cowboy [1958] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:

Cowboy is both a sturdy Delmer Daves picture-his third with Glenn Ford, following Jubal and 3:10 to Yuma-and also one of the most offbeat Westerns ever. It must be the most true to form too, with Frank Harris's memoirs as the source and a picaresque screenplay by Edmund H. North and Dalton Trumbo (a blacklistee, credited only posthumously). There's a pileup of oddities and complications at the outset, with Chicago hotel clerk Harris (Jack Lemmon) already in mid-romance with a daughter of the Mexican aristocracy (Anna Kashfi-Mrs Marlon Brando at the time), and Texas cattleman Tom Reese (Ford) storming in to commandeer an entire floor of the hotel for him and his drovers so they can party 'till, well, the cows come home. Partying is curtailed when Reese loses big at cards; Harris bails him out with his savings, and Reese finds he's taken on not only an unwanted partner but a tenderfoot besides. Soon everyone is headed south. Cowboy merits its bedrock title. This is a rare Western in which the job of breaking horses, trail herding, and so on, figures as a dynamic aspect of the storytelling. The film also has a blunt and original way of looking at death, not as a genre convention but as something abrupt, ungainly, and often absurd, in both senses of the word. (This applies equally to men and cattle, by the way. [+]
) The camerawork is trim, angular, and somehow precarious, and the jagged editing hustles the very eventful proceedings to a close in barely an hour and a half. Saddle up. -Richard T. Jameson, Amazon. com.
