Review Prelude to a Kiss [1992] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:

Alec Baldwin reprises a role he originated in Craig Lucas's off-Broadway smash (which later had a Broadway run without him) in this touchingly romantic, funny and underrated fantasy. He falls for a woman (Meg Ryan) at first sight and marries her but on their wedding day an elderly stranger wanders into the reception, kisses the bride and trades bodies with her. Once Baldwin figures out that something is amiss with the Mrs. , he must track down the old man, in whom resides the spirit of his true love. This is a beautiful allegory about the nature of love and the commitment to give oneself in sickness and health, for better or worse, to achieve a true meeting of the spirits. Prelude to a Kiss was directed with a light touch by the late Norman Rene, with strong performances by Baldwin and Ryan. -Marshall Fine.

Review Only You [1995] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Columbia TriStar:

While director Norman Jewison's Moonstruck is a romantic cornerstone, this 1994 film is often overlooked. It's a sweet valentine about a young woman, aptly named Faith (Marisa Tomei, never cuter), who chases an unknown man to Europe because the name "Damon Bradley" was once spelled on a Ouija board as her true love. With her sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt, whose own marriage seems to be falling apart), she travels the streets of Rome looking for Damon Bradley. And lo and behold, she literally runs into a man claiming to be Damon. Is this meant to be? Faith certainly thinks so. Robert Downey Jr. (also never cuter) plays Damon in a role that showcases his charms. He shows his quick wit in handing Faith's advances and his absolute devotion to her when the winds change. Despite the cuteness factor, this is a movie to fall in love with. Jewison and Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cameraman) present a sun-kissed Italy so beautiful, you might be tempted to hop on a plane immediately after viewing the movie. [+]

Review An Affair to Remember [1957] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:

Get out your handkerchiefs for this four-star weepie, a 1957 remake of the 1939 Love Affair, directed by Leo McCarey, who also made the original. Grant and Kerr are strangers on an ocean liner, involved with other people, who can't resist each other for a shipboard romance. But they decide to test whether this is the real thing by agreeing to split up, then meeting in six months atop the Empire State Building. Is there anyone who can resist that set-up or the tragic romantic mishap that nearly splits them up? Can you keep dry eyes during the famous finale? Some prefer the original (with Charles Boyer); practically no one liked the underrated 1994 remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. While occasionally a shade slow, this one soars on Grant's charm and Kerr's noble suffering. -Marshall Fine, Amazon. com.

Review A Foreign Affair (1948):

A must for all collectors of Billy Wilder films. Set in Berlin in the immediate aftermath of WWII, it tells a gently comic story of a straight-laced congresswoman finding romance in an unlikely quarter. It also has a great performance from Marlene Dietrich who sings three songs.

Review Better off Dead [1985] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Paramount:

In Better off Dead, Lane Myer (John Cusack) is stuck in a personal hell. A compulsive adolescent everyman growing up in Suburbia, USA; not only does he fail to make the prestigious high-school ski team (again), but his beloved sweetheart, Beth, also leaves him for Roy, the team's popular arrogant captain. If this isn't bad enough, he's stuck with a mother who frighteningly experiments-rather than cooks-with food, a brother who builds rockets out of models, and a best friend so desperate for drugs that he settles for snorting powdered snow. Faced with these prospects, Lane opts to end it all. until he comes up with a ridiculous plan to gain acceptance and win Beth back. Director Savage Steve Holland warps this simple, clichéd premise, letting his wacky imagination twist it into a fairly original, slightly dark, and completely hilarious 80s teen comedy. Not as serious a "suicide-attempt" movie as, say, Harold and Maude but just as funny, the film is more a collection of screwball sketches than a narrative. Holland enlivens the high jinks with surrealistic fantasy touches, including Jell-O that crawls, a hamburger that sings Van Halen, drawings that mock its creator, and a psychotic paperboy seeking blood over a missing two dollars. [+]
Cusack puts the whole thing on his shoulders and carries the insanity with another one of his touching, obsessively romantic performances, which along with Say Anything, The Sure Thing and One Crazy Summer, made him the quintessential (and appealing) personification of lovestruck adolescence and suffering. -Dave McCoy.

Review Emma [1996] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Miramax:

Most people didn't mind Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in this charming, 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel (which also inspired Clueless). But even if it doesn't sound quite right to you, there are plenty of authentic and wonderful Brit thespians in this film by screenwriter-turned-director Douglas McGrath (co-author of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway), including Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply), Alan Cumming (Buddy), Phyllida Law (Much Ado About Nothing), Ewan McGregor (the Scots star of Trainspotting) and Sophie Thompson, outstanding and finally heartbreaking as the chattering Miss Bates. Paltrow plays Austen's benign busybody, Emma Woodhouse-so busy trying to arrange the lives of others that she is sidestepping her own. McGrath brings a kind of pretty and light touch to the production, his best move the wise delegation of creative authority to the actors themselves. -Tom Keogh Most people didn't mind Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in this charming 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Emma. [+]
Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as Elinor Dashwood-the one with "sense"-she also wrote the witty screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Titanic flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister, Marianne (the one with "sensibility"). Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous films. Thompson's script won an Oscar. -Robert Horton, Amazon. com.

Review American Woman [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:

An undemanding slice of Irish whimsy, The Closer You Get may not hit the crowd-pleasing heights of Waking Ned, but ultimately settles in to a comfortable, enticing groove inhabited by the likes of TV's Ballykissangel. The debut feature of Aileen Ritchie and set in a desolate coastal town of Kilvara in County Donegal, the story concerns the lovelorn male townsfolk who advertise for Gaelic-loving women in a Florida newspaper. This action stirs the jealousies of Kilvara's women, who respond by inviting a group of Spaniards to the local dance. A battle of the sexes ensues ultimately resulting in the Guinness-swilling eejits realising that they shouldn't squander what they've got. Simple moral, simple clichés, simple humour, but executed with a considerable charm that makes it an undeniably enjoyable and light-hearted film. Ian Hart is particularly likable as local butcher Kieran (bizarrely dyeing his hair bright blonde to impress the ladies) while he and his boredom-numbed mates are more than matched by the feisty likes of Niamh Cusack and Cathleen Bradley as Kilvara's ignored beauties. Add in some beautiful locations and what you have is an inoffensive little charmer that will suit any lazy afternoon's viewing-and what's wrong with that? -Danny Graydon.

Review Royal Wedding [1951] (NTSC) / Alpha Video:

Fred Astaire dances on the ceiling in this 1951 Alan Jay Lerner musical for MGM, directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain). The appealing story finds Astaire as part of a brother-and-sister act (along with Jane Powell) that travels to London at the time of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding. Astaire and Powell each find romances that threaten to break up the act, but that's mostly fun window dressing in a movie better known for some truly creative sequences made vivid by Donen, including Astaire's famous dance with a hat rack and his duet with Powell, "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You (When You Know I've Been a Liar All My Life)?" -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.
