It has been seventeen years now since Oscar and Felix saw each other for the last time. Oscar is living in Florida, Felix in New York. One day, Oscar is called by his son Brucey who invites him to his wedding to Felix' daughter Hannah next Sunday in California. Oscar and Felix meet again at Los Angeles International Airport and take a rental car in order to go to San Malina for the wedding. The trip develops into an odyssey, starting with Oscar forgetting Felix' suitcase at the Budget station, going over to the complete loss of the directions (and the car), several difficulties with the police, a dead person, a toupet, underwear and revenge-hungry Cowboys and ending up with Felix meeting the "one and only" woman. But the wedding has to be reached on time.

The Tao of Steve is an American indie take on the slacker lothario and falls into the old familiar story: eternally adolescent man meets grown-up woman and is forced to face up to a life in which he has never taken an emotional risk or a life-changing plunge. In his college days, Dex (Donal Logue) was a slim, cool, smooth-talking ladies' man. A decade later, he's an overweight, underachieving kindergarten teacher, but he's honed his pick-up technique into a fine art-a mix of zen, tough-guy cool, and college philosophy he and his buddies call "the Tao of Steve", named after the manly triad of Steve Austin (aka the Six Million Dollar Man), Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord's unflappable cop on Hawaii Five-0), and the king of all Steves: Steve McQueen. Santa Fe is populated with his one-night stands, but then he runs into Syd (Greer Goodman), a smart, sexy ex-classmate with an arsenal of sharp retorts, at a college reunion. Logue's easy charm and low-key confidence makes Dex an easy guy to like, and director Jenniphr Goodman (who co-wrote the script with Greer, her sister and star of the film) invests his lifestyle of leisure (mostly guys chatting about girls and trading pop culture references) with an offhanded naturalness. But neither is she oblivious to the holding pattern his life has taken. A romantic comedy with an absurdist edge, Just a Kiss begins when Dag (Ron Eldard), a commercial director, sleeps with his best friend's girlfriend, Rebecca (Marley Shelton), a dancer, while she's touring in Europe. When their infidelity is revealed back home in New York City it sets off a cascade of people falling into bed together, including Dag's girlfriend Halley (Kyra Sedgwick), Rebecca's other lover Andre (Taye Diggs) and a waitress at a bowling alley (Marisa Tomei) with strange obsessions and loose morals. Just a Kiss slips to and fro in time and veers in and out of rotoscope animation, but even the live sequences have a cartoonish edge; it's hard to care about what happens to these caricatures, no matter how tight their pants or how skimpy their tank tops. On its theatrical release, James Mangold's romantic comedy Kate & Leopold was rightly panned for holes in the logic of its time-travel plot. Stewart (Liev Schreiber) finds a portal to 1876 and goes to observe his ancestor Leopold, Duke of Albany (Hugh Jackman) who then follows him back to 2001. Since Leopold is responsible for inventing a key component in lifts, this instantly causes problems. The gallant Leopold charms, and is charmed by Stewart's ex, Kate (Meg Ryan), a hard-boiled cynical marketing expert who finds in Victorian idealism a corrective to her view of the world. And this is part of the problem with the film-we cannot entirely believe in Meg Ryan as a cynic, or that her problems can be resolved by going off to 1876 to be with her aristocratic sweetie, and much of the film has an oddly sour hostility to its heroine. Hugh Jackman is a delight in the fish-out-of-water scenes and Breckin Meyer is also very funny as Kate's actor brother, who assumes Leopold is a colleague sunk deep into the creation of a part. On the DVD Kate and Leopold has crisp Dolby 5:1 sound, which allows the very different acoustics of the two historical periods to be neatly contrasted, and is presented in anamorphic 1. 85:1 widescreen. We get both the theatrical and Director's cut, both offered with commentary, though the Director's cut audio track is more polemical. The Director's cut restores some expository material and makes more sense. [+]
