Review About Last Night... [1986] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Columbia TriStar:For better or worse, David Mamet's hit play Sexual Perversity in Chicago is watered down into this romantic comedy about a couple (played by Rob Lowe and Demi Moore) who get together and then fall apart due to Lowe's character's inability to commit. Jim Belushi is on hand as the gratuitously swinish best friend who looks at women as meat, and Elizabeth Perkins is entertainingly arch as Moore's gal pal and Belushi's nemesis. There is nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (co-creator of TV's thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn't make it bad or dull. While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion. Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore's understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle. -Tom Keogh.

Review Shakespeare In Love [1999] / 4 Front Video:One of the most endearing and intelligent romantic comedies of the 1990s, the Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love is filled with such good will, sunny romance, snappy one-liners and devilish cleverness that it's absolutely irresistible. With tongue placed firmly in cheek, at its outset the film tracks young Will Shakespeare's overwrought battle with writer's block and the efforts of theatre owner Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush, in rare form) to stage Will's latest comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Jokey comedy, though, soon takes a backseat to ravishing romance when the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) disguises herself as a young man to wangle herself an audition in the all-male cast and wins both the part of Romeo and, after much misunderstanding, the playwright's heart. Soon enough, Will's pirate comedy becomes the beautiful, tragic Romeo and Juliet, reflecting the agony and ecstasy of Will and Viola's romance-he's married and she's set to marry the slimy Lord Wessex (Colin Firth). The way that Oscar-winning screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard enfold their story within the parameters of Romeo and Juliet (and even Twelfth Night) is nothing short of brilliant-it would take a Shakespearean scholar to dissect the innumerable parallels, oft-quoted lines, plot developments, and thematic borrowings. And most amazingly, Norman and Stoppard haven't forgotten to entertain their audience in addition to riding a Shakespearean roller coaster, with director John Madden (Mrs. Brown) reigning in his huge ensemble with rollicking energy. Along the way there are small gems to be found, including Judi Dench's eight-minute, Oscar-winning turn as a truly regal Queen Elizabeth, but the key element of Shakespeare in Love's success rests on the milky-white shoulders of its two stars. Fiennes, inexplicably overlooked at Oscar time, is a dashing, heartfelt Will and as for Best Actress winner Paltrow, well, nothing she'd done before could have prepared viewers for how amazing she is here. Breathtakingly beautiful, fiercely intelligent, strong-willed and lovestruck-it's a performance worthy of Shakespeare in more ways than one. [+]
By the film's end, you'll be thoroughly won over-and brushing up your Shakespeare with newfound ardour. -Mark Englehart.

Review Girls Night In (3 Disc Box Set - Maid In Mahattan/13 Going On 30/50 First Dates) [2002] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:In the breezy Maid in Manhattan, a maid in a top-flight hotel (Jennifer Lopez) chances to dress in a guest's clothes just when a handsome political candidate (Ralph Fiennes) walks in. Naturally, he's bowled over and pursues her; he's initially drawn to her gorgeous good looks but soon comes to appreciate her honesty and common sense. Of course, she can't let him know that she's only a maid, and various hi-jinks ensue-it's all pretty formulaic, but lurking in the edges of this glossy, brainless romance are a wealth of sly turns by Natasha Richardson and Amy Sedaris (as callow socialites), Bob Hoskins (as a dignified butler), Stanley Tucci (as Fiennes' exasperated campaign manager), and many less familiar faces. All help to give Maid in Manhattan the life and texture that has been processed out of the main characters. -Bret Fetzer Jennifer Garner glows like a rising star in 13 Going on 30, a girly version of the Tom Hanks classic Big. Jenna (Garner, Alias, Daredevil), a frustrated teenage girl, just wants to skip past all those annoying adolescent years and arrive at a glamorous adulthood-and thanks to some inexplicable wishing dust, she does. But once she re-orientates herself to a life as a high-end magazine editor with a sports-star boyfriend, she discovers that in the 17 years she skipped she became a not-so-nice person, including casting aside her best friend Matt (played as an adult by Mark Ruffalo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). There's no question that Jenna will rediscover her lost innocence, but Garner rises above the lack of suspense. 13 Going on 30 floats along, buoyed by her goofy sweetness. Her lovely looks are made accessible by her unfettered silliness; it's a winning combination. [+]
-Bret Fetzer 50 First Dates is a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humour that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can't quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favour of easy laughs. Like Barrymore's character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you've seen it. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Bedrooms and Hallways [1999] / Momentum Pictures:Rose Troche's debut film Go Fish quickly became a cult classic for its nuanced, cheerful portrait of a lesbian love in the 90s, so many were surprised when Bedrooms and Hallways contained not a dyke in sight as it traces the merry-go-round of relationships revolving around bisexual Leo (Kevin McKidd) and his friends, including straight Sally (Jennifer Ehle), camp-as-a-row-of-tents Darren (Tom Hollander) and his married estate-agent lover Jeremy (Hugo Weaving). Underneath the cheeky dollops of satire and farce-involving Simon Callow as a New Age counsellor for a men's group and Hollander and Weaving's love romps in other people's houses-there's a more thoughtful analysis of the fluidity of sexuality going on. The fantasy sequences are hit and miss, but there's no doubting the appeal of the leads, particularly the magnificent Hollander, resplendent throughout with bitchy one-liners and a series of ever more outré animal print trousers. -Leslie Felperin.

Review Crush [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Columbia TriStar:If you can get over its slightly far-fetched storyline, there's a lot of heart in Crush. Three longstanding friends-Kate, the American headmistress (Andie MacDowell), Janine the police inspector (Imelda Staunton) and Molly, an acerbic, thrice-divorced GP (Anna Chancellor)-meet up each week to drown their sorrows with gin and cigarettes, with a prize box of caramels for the one who can report the most disastrous love life. It's this failure with men that has cemented their friendship, for in all other respects they're very different personalities. The cracks begin to show when Kate has a fling, developing into a love affair, with an ex-student 15 years her junior. When she announces that she's going to marry the sensitive and sexy Jed (fresh-faced Kenny Doughty, of whom we'll undoubtedly be seeing more), Molly and Janine are determined to put a stop to such foolishness. We soon discover that, for all their raunchy talk, they're hidebound by convention, shocked by the difference in age and status and fuelled by jealousy. Their actions spark off a disastrous chain of events that give a vital grittiness to the film. Visually, it's a bit like stepping into a Trollope novel (Joanna, not Anthony), all Cotswold stone, clergy and quaint streets. But the strong dialogue and the conviction of performances from the three main characters (cast to excellent effect) make Crush a deeply absorbing, bittersweet film. On the DVD: Crush is a good DVD package: not only do we have sharp sound and well-defined colour that brings out the best of the picturesque setting, but the extras are well put together. [+]
As well as theatrical trailer and scene selections, there's 25 minutes' worth of interviews with cast and director, a behind-the-scenes feature, a brief but riveting deleted scene, a featurette on the storyline, and the option to watch the film with or without the director's commentary, which is very enlightening. There are also details of other Film Four releases. -Harriet Smith.
