The director and stars of 1998's You've Got Mail scored a breakthrough hit with this hugely popular romantic comedy from 1993, about a recently engaged woman (Meg Ryan) who hears the sad story of a grieving widower (Tom Hanks) on the radio and believes that they are destined to be together. She's single in New York, he lives in Seattle with a young son, but the cross-country attraction proves irresistible and pretty soon Meg's on a westbound flight. What happens from there is. well, you must have been living in a cave to have let this sweet-hearted comedy slip below your pop-cultural radar. There's little complexity or depth to writer-director Nora Ephron's cheesy tale of a romantic fait accompli, and more than a little contrivance to the subplots that threaten to keep Hanks and Ryan from actually meeting. But the purity of star chemistry here is hard to deny, and this may be the first film to indicate the more serious and sympathetic side of Hanks that is revealed in later roles. With its clever jokes about "chick movies" and repeated homage to the classic weeper An Affair to Remember, this may not be everybody's brand of amorous entertainment, but it's got an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many a movie fan. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. An extraordinary comic performance from Reese Witherspoon makes Legally Blonde a winner. Witherspoon's Elle is a ditzy blonde forced by circumstances to metamorphose into a strong-minded and academic lawyer, without losing her strong sense of self in the process. After majoring in fashion sales, she applies to Harvard Law School to pursue the boy who jilted her, and discovers that she is smart as well as beautiful. Much of this is standard fish-out-of-water fare, with drab "intellectuals" snubbing the colourful and well-meaning Elle. Yet feminists will be disconcerted to discover that, apparently, a life of manicures and accessorising will teach you as much about female solidarity as decades of consciousness-raising! Recruited to the defence team of a fitness guru, she takes the defendant's innocence for granted rather than feeling superior to her. Gradually, she and her ex's new fiancée build a fragile friendship that matters to both of them; Selma Blair is excellent as the snobbish vulnerable Vivienne. It might be a predictable self-help fairytale, but it's also well-observed, cute and funny. On the DVD: the DVD is presented in 1. 78:1 ratio with 5. 1 Dolby digital sound as standard. [+]

Janice Beard 45 WPM is a film for anyone who ever swam in the typing pool. It also provides reassurance that anyone who works in an office isn't alone in feeling alone. Scottish Janice (newcomer Eileen Walsh) suffers a never-ending bad hair day while temping at Kendon Motors during a car launch. She's earning pennies for her agoraphobic mother, to whom she sends elaborately staged videos fibbing about her successes in the big world. So simple a life gets complicated by the evil machinations of typing pool shark Julia (a fantastic Patsy Kensit), and the dangerous allure of office boy Sean (Rhys Ifans sporting the same haircut from Notting Hill). An industrial espionage sub-plot tugs the light-hearted tone downward only very occasionally. Co-written and directed by first-timer Clare Kilner, on its original release this became a film festival favourite thanks to its dizzy charm (especially Walsh), seeing the Kensit of Absolute Beginners struggle at a Salsa class and for opening with the line: "My father died in childbirth". -Paul Tonks.

From its amazing opening sequence of human and vehicular traffic sweeping through a nighttime cityscape entirely created inside the Ufa film factory, Asphalt marks a late addition to the eye-catching, mind-bending artistry of the German Expressionist cinema of the '20s. Released in March 1929, when silents were on the way out, until recently it was just a title, and the source of a few grabby stills, in the film history books. In this most complete restoration yet, it stands as the ultimate "street film," a genre prized for bravura artifice and potent allegory. In such urban symphonies, the cinema was simultaneously defining and reimagining the essence of modernity in images both hypnotically dark and ablaze with shattered light. The story is a simple one, but told with psychological subtlety and strikingly fluid camerawork and editing. A young cop (Gustav Fröhlich, the hero of Metropolis) with rectitude in his veins apprehends a sneak thief (Betty Amann) in the act of stealing a diamond, then fails to turn her in. There's a gratifying mutuality to their seduction; although the lady's tiger-like leap upon her captor is astonishingly feral, she's soon as vulnerable and perplexed in their relationship as he is. A subplot involving her longtime lover, a master criminal (Hans Adelbert von Schlettow), eventually intersects with their love affair. Up to the very end-which somewhat anticipates Robert Bresson's Pickpocket-we can't be sure who's going to be sacrificed to save whom. Director Joe May was no auteur on the order of Fritz Lang or F. W. Murnau; it's hard to locate an artistic personality in his movie. But he and cinematographer Günther Rittau had a state-of-the-art camera dolly to play with, making the German ideal of "the unfettered camera" a freewheeling reality. Amann is beguiling as a Louise Brooks knockoff, an ambulatory white fur under a cloche hat who evolves into a dark, hieratic figure of Fate. -Richard T. Jameson.

Pretty Brittany Murphy and prettier Ashton Kutcher make a surprisingly enjoyable comic team in Just Married, a romantic comedy about a horrible honeymoon. After a whirlwind romance, radio traffic announcer Kutcher and rich girl Murphy get married over the objections of her upper-crust family. Their love can overcome snobbery-but as the cuddly pair start to drive each other nuts over mishaps travelling through Europe, it starts to look like their love can't overcome intimacy. Just Married has a sprightly script that keeps one foot on the ground (unlike some recent romantic comedies that seem to have no connection to reality) and one eye on the small ways in which lovers can get on each other's nerves.
