Review A Walk in the Clouds [1995] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:

Keanu Reeves is completely wooden in this romantic misfire by Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate). Reeves plays a World War II vet who hits the road as a travelling salesman and agrees to help a desperate, pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon)-who is afraid to let her father (Giancarlo Giannini) see her condition-by pretending to be her husband. Most of the story takes place in the old man's vineyard, and Arau makes a life of swollen fruit, grape-stomping, sunlight and tan flesh that looks amazingly erotic. But there are plenty of sillier distractions, such as the sight of farm hands chasing insects with flapping gossamer wings attached to their arms. Reeves is terribly self-conscious, while stalwart Anthony Quinn is memorable as the damsel's benevolent grandfather. -Tom Keogh.

Review Sense And Sensibility [1981] / 2 Entertain Video:

On one level, the BBC's 1981 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is a classic example of old-fashioned Sunday teatime drama. In Elinor Dashwood, thanks to Irene Richard's subtle performance, it has one of Jane Austen's most appealing heroines: a troubled young woman who outwardly "manages" her thoughts but must come to terms with a world that is not as black and white as she would have it. There are fine costumes, plenty of romance and some splendid locations. This Sense and Sensibility does have heaving bosoms and manly breeches, (on a modest level), but it was made before Hollywood discovered Jane Austen and turned her novel of manners into a multi-Oscar winning film, and long before the BBC's watershed 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice unleashed a new, sexed-up interpretation of Austen's work on a hungry audience. Its real charm lies in the dialogue, and the delicacy of the understated performances that suggest real turmoil beneath the surface of gentility. The exchanges are witty and sharp. The reciprocal misery of the Dashwood sisters as their romantic aspirations appear to crumble is touching and credible. And there is, of course, a happy ending. Vintage stuff. -Piers Ford.

In 1983, the BBC made this 261-minute mini-series from Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park. Austen explores the well-trodden theme of class distinction and the triumph of love, but Fanny Price (Sylvestra Le Touzel) is an original Austen creation. Fanny, from a large and poor family, is taken into the home of her wealthy uncle and aunt, the stoic Sir Thomas Bertram (Bernard Hepton) and the childlike Lady Bertram (Angela Pleasence, daughter of actor Donald). Also residing at the posh Bertram mansion are the oldest son, irresponsible Tom (Christopher Villiers), distant Julia (Liz Crowther) and the kindly Edmund (Nicholas Farrell). If you can get past Le Touzel's odd mannerism of making little chopping movements with her open-palmed hand for emphasis, this is a faithful adaptation of the novel. It's much slower than Northanger Abbey and lacks some of the passionate drama of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, but it still depicts a strong yet very kind heroine who stands up for what she believes in. When popular philanderer Henry Crawford (Robert Burbage) actually falls for and proposes to Fanny, she rejects him, much to the surprise and disdain of the Bertrams-except, of course, for our hero Edmund. For trivia buffs: Jonny Lee Miller, who plays young Charles Price (one of Fanny's brothers), has the role of Edmund Bertram in the 1999 theatrical version of Mansfield Park. -N. F. [+]

Hoodlum, Bill Duke's interesting but flawed blaxploitation take on the classic gangster movie, usefully redresses a balance. It is all too easy to see the criminal underworld of the 1920s as an all-white affair, in which Harlem is an exotic locale where occasionally white gangsters patronise the black performers of the Cotton Club, from which black audiences were specifically barred. Yet one of the principal sources of illegal revenue was the numbers racket in Harlem-gambling on stock market closing figures-revenue on which the likes of Dutch Schultz and Lucky Luciano were keen to lay their hands. Lawrence Fishburne is an impressive "Bumpy" Johnson, the street enforcer turned strategist for the matriarchal Queen (Cicely Tyson), gradually learning a ruthlessness that forfeits him the love of a good woman, Francine (Vanessa Williams). Tim Roth as Schultz and Andy Garcia as Luciano are essentially melodramatic turns-the foul-mouthed punk and the reptilian smoothy-and both turn in enjoyably full-blooded unsubtle performances. -Roz Kaveney.
