Review Scooby Doo - What's New Scooby Doo - Safari So Goodi / Warner Home Video:A lot has changed since the original 70s-era gang of Scooby-Doo fans gave way to today's followers of the hipster mystery cartoon series. Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders contains all the familiar elements; even the groovy green Mystery Machine makes a comeback, but it isn't as reliable as it used to be. At the outset of Alien Invaders, it breaks down, leaving the crime-solving crew stranded in a creepy desert town overrun by aliens. From there, the plot unwinds faster than Scooby can down a box of his namesake snacks. A band of swollen-headed purple and green space guys-Zoinks-send the terrified teens scrambling for cover, but it's not long before the quick-witted gang figures out that there's a team of bad guys behind the bug-eyed masks. That's not to say, though, that real-life aliens aren't also roaming the streets, as Shag and Scoob (who hook up in an unprecedented Scooby-Doo romance with a peace sign-wearing babe and her equally hip dog) discover in the course of clearing out of the phoney aliens' hair-raising path. To longtime viewers, the love angle seems unsettling; it steals from the tightness of the mystery team. Still, with so much creepy fun to get caught up in, it's a minor complaint. Scott Innes, the modern-day voice of both Shaggy and Scooby, nails both parts, and Jennifer Love Hewitt fans also will want to tune in-she sings the Scooby theme song. -Tammy La Gorce, Amazon. Review Rugrats in Paris: The Movie [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Paramount:The second theatrical film from the popular television show, Rugrats in Paris is better than the original surprise hit, The Rugrats Movie. Instead of delving into their rich fantasy life, the Rugrats gang goes on a real adventure when their families visit Paris together. Mr Pickles is brought over to fix his giant Reptar robot, the centerpiece of EuroReptarland (a biting version of the trouble-plagued EuroDisney). The underlying story has Chuckie (the one with the square glasses) looking for a new mummy, as his dad (who has a square personality) starts to fall for a villainous executive (voiced by Susan Sarandon). Soon Paris takes it on the chin as the diaper gang tries to save Chuckie's dad from the altar. The success of the Rugrats is in the writing, where much thought goes into finding comic gems for the adults (there are wonderful parodies of The Godfather and King Kong that will sail over kids' heads). The garble-mouthed youngsters keep up their joyful ways in this 78-minute feature that feels no different from their Nickelodeon series except in length, some 3-D animation sequences, and an eclectic song score (with Cyndi Lauper's "I Want a Mom That Will Last Forever" the real catch). Review Action Man - Vol. 1 - The Call To Action / Walt Disney Home Video:Action Man, the Call to Action comprises over an hour of non-stop exertion featuring the square-jawed hero with the over-developed pecs. This well-animated film is great entertainment and, although the storyline and dialogue may not be terribly original, it has everything a "Team Xtreme" fan could wish for: gadgets, extreme sport and non-stop action. There is also a proper baddy with a proper baddy's name, Dr. X, and a strong tendency for good to triumph over evil. The action starts immediately with Action Man, Alex Mann, head-to-head with his best friend and rival, Brandon Caine, racing across the rooftops of Paris. Brandon brings the "buddy" element to the story and acts as the catalyst for adventure when he falls into the clutches of the evil doctor. Frankly, Brandon is not very likeable-even before he's been "adapted" by Dr. X-and it's hard to see why Alex and his team, a rag-tag posse of assorted personalities, bother to try and free him. Fortunately they do, enabling Alex to test the AMP Factor, the recently discovered mental ability that allows him to consider every possibility in a flash and perform impossible escapes. This special feature-length episode is followed by a shorter story, Grey Areas in which Alex learns more about the AMP Factor and encounters a beautiful assassin. [+]The scene is set for further adventures and volume two, Action Man, Storm Front is also available. This video contains some violence, hence the PG classification, but should be suitable for most children aged eight and over. -Helen Baker.
