Review Rammstein - Live Aus Berlin [1999] / Universal Island:Berlin's industrial metal sextet Rammstein was already provocative when the band nabbed unwanted U. S. press attention as favorites of the two young sociopaths behind 1999's tragic high school shootings in Columbine, Colorado. This concert video, expertly produced during a huge outdoor concert the previous summer, won't dissipate the tension between Rammstein's fans and social critics looking to find the links between such violence and the band's intense, sweeping music, especially on this uncensored edit of their nearly 100-minute set. Sonically, the band lashes the clangorous legacy of industrial countrymen like Einsturzende Neubaten to the simpler, head-banging power chords of metallurgists like the Scorpions, Rammstein's front line of rasping, squealing guitars laced with synthesizer and pummeled by splashy drum work. The music's focal point is vocalist Till Lindemann, who half-sings, half-bellows in a guttural bass that makes most metal men sound like countertenors, an effect underscored by Lindemann's beefy, muscular physique as he stalks the stage. His macho growl and restless movement contrast with the largely motionless postures of his bandmates, which include a vampiric guitarist, a rail-thin keyboardist, and an even more spectral, bald bassist whose black-taped skull nods to S&M couture. A massive stage set that's one part Borg, one part Blade Runner, onstage pyrotechnics, and piercing klieg lights that sweep the vast crowd pointedly synthesize Third Reich with apocalypse as rapturous fans sing along with "Du Hast" ("You Hate") or "Heirate Mich" ("Worship Me"). When the mesmerizing sturm und drang finally pauses, it's due to a graphic, simulated homosexual rape (on "Bueck Dich") that earns this tape its advisory, and will repulse all but the most ardent fans. -Sam Sutherland.

Review The Who -- The Kids Are Alright Special Edition (2 discs) [1979] (NTSC) / Sanctuary Visual Entertainment:Devotees of the Who, who haven't availed themselves of Jeff Stein's thrilling, self-mocking 1979 documentary The Kids Are Alright, shouldn't wait another minute now that the film has been painstakingly-perhaps heroically-restored to its theatrical-release length from original elements. The sound is clearer than on previous video releases, images are once more crisp and colour-rich, and adjustments in tape speed make the band sound like themselves again, particularly in vintage television performances and filmed club dates from as far back as the band's sonically thrilling, early R&B period. Special features are extensive, including, among many other delights, multiple-angle footage, an insightful interview with Roger Daltrey, a feature about the film's restoration, and a mesmerising, isolated John Entwistle audio track. -Tom Keogh.

Review Prince - Live At The Aladdin - Las Vegas [2003] / Universal Island:Prince's galvanising performance Live at the Aladdin demonstrates that he really is one of the great talents of the last quarter-century, a fact easily obscured by the sheer volume and varying quality of his recorded output, not to mention his weird behaviour. The guy has always had a preternatural ability to channel R&B and rock legends such as Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown (compare this performance's amazing "Money Don't Matter 2 Night/The Work"); now he's added more sophisticated flavours to the mix as well, ranging from George Benson to Steely Dan and Weather Report, and all without sacrificing his own voice. Add to that covers of the Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (really), all played by Prince and his smokin', skin-tight band, and what you get is one of the best shows of 2002, or any other year. It's extraordinary. -Sam Graham.
