Review The Old Grey Whistle Test - Vol. 3 [1971] / 2 Entertain Video:

Playing all 31 tracks on The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 will make some viewers believe the producers are now beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel; others will think that finally they're getting around to the good stuff. Given that the series somehow managed to take an enormous range of music on board while at the same time seeming entirely consistent (surely the secret of its success), there's evidence for both points of view. The case for the prosecution might cite Janis Ian (her melancholic self-obsession now seems indulgent to the point of prissiness), Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat" is simply a dreary song) or Orange Juice (did they ever really mean anything much to anyone?). The case for the defence, however, is pretty strong overall, with highlights such as Bowie doing "Oh You Pretty Things", Johnny Winter covering "Jumping Jack Flash" as if he was its rightful owner, and Kings BB and Freddie bringing it all back home with two excellent performances. There's something for everyone along the way. Proggers get Discipline-era King Crimson, which saw Adrian Belew saving the band from disappearing up its own fundament; folkies get an unplugged Fairport Convention; punks get John Cooper Clarke and the Jam; somebody or other gets the Bangles. However, if there's one track that justifies the existence of this disc all by itself, it has to be "In a Hole" from the Jesus and Mary Chain, whose glorious nihilism made the Pistols seem like a folk group. On the DVD: The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 DVD is presented in old-telly 4:3 ratio and offers numerous extras, including contributor profiles and links, a commentary and an artists' gallery. -Roger Thomas.

Review The Rolling Stones - Rock And Roll Circus / Universal Island:

Unavailable at all for nearly three decades, then issued in a VHS edition in 1996, the Rolling Stones' legendary Rock and Roll Circus finally gets the full treatment with this DVD release documenting the 1968 event. The Stones were reportedly unhappy with their performance (hence the long delay), and it isn't their finest moment; performing "Jumping Jack Flash" and a variety of songs from their then-new Beggars Banquet album, Keith Richards is game, but Jagger's preening (especially on "Sympathy for the Devil") is over the top, and guitarist Brian Jones looks dissolute and well on his way to his death the following year. A certain weirdness permeates some of the other musical acts as well: Jethro Tull lip-syncs unconvincingly, Taj Mahal and band were obliged to perform before the circus set was completed and the audience had arrived, and John Lennon's outing with impromptu supergroup the Dirty Mac (with Richards, Eric Clapton, and drummer Mitch Mitchell) is hampered by Yoko Ono's caterwauling, although their version of the Beatles' "Yer Blues" is cool. Still, the Who are brilliant, Marianne Faithfull is beautiful, the various circus acts are fun, and the crowd clearly loves it. The DVD comes with some fascinating bonus features, including three extra songs by Mahal, some lovely classical piano by Julius Katchen, and a "quad split-screen" version of "Yer Blues". Best of all are a new interview with the Who's Pete Townshend and the various commentary tracks added for the DVD-especially those by Tull's Ian Anderson, director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and Stones Jagger, Richards, and Bill Wyman (who dryly attributes Jagger's reluctance to issue the show to his dissatisfaction with his own performance, not the band's). Flaws notwithstanding, this is a treat. -Sam Graham.

Review Elvis Presley / Elv1s - 30 No.1 Hits [DVD AUDIO] Release date: 2003-05-12
RRP: £9.99
Price: £8.19

Review Elv1s - 30 No.1 Hits [DVD AUDIO] / Elvis Presley:

Heralded in the UK by an ultra-cool remix by JXL, Elvis: 30 #1 Hits is one of the most succinct packages of Presley's best work ever released. Based on the idea of the Beatles 1 album, this compilation includes all 31 Elvis singles that have been number one in either the US or the UK. Set in roughly chronological order, the collection begins with his first hit, the swaggering "Heartbreak Hotel". Despite digital remastering it still sounds nearly half a century old when compared to his most recent (and posthumous) hit "A Little Less Conversation", but it remains a timeless classic for new generations to discover. Most people-young or old-will know of or be able to hum a few bars from most of the songs here. Many a karaoke singer will have had a stab at "Love Me Tender" or "Suspicious Minds"; others will have heard a family member brutally crooning their way through "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" or "It's Now or Never". Twenty-five years after Elvis's untimely death, younger generations have become accustomed to the image of Presley as a tragic icon of comedy excess, remembering him for garish jump-suits, trademark shades and a thick black quiff. Elvis: 30 #1 Hits will remind many that he was the King for a very good reason. -David Trueman.

Review You Can Sing-Seven Steps to Singing [2003] / ITV DVD:

Aimed principally at those who love posing in front of their bedroom mirror pretending they're the next Madonna or Robbie, You Can Sing is a bluffers' guide to singing pop. The main feature follows teenagers Danni and Peter as they receive coaching from two of the UK's leading pop-vocal coaches, Carrie and David Grant. Unlike the cut-throat competition of Pop Idol and Fame Academy, this is a cosy step-by-step guide to singing, with the Grants adopting cuddly teacher personas. The two students are not your everyday pop wannabes either, having seemingly been dragged in from stage school rather than the street. The feature climaxes with the pair putting into practice Carrie and David's seven steps to success (ranging from breathing technique to vocal range) by professionally recording tracks such as Williams's "Angels" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful". The show includes advice from some of the Grants' most recent and successful students—among them Will Young, Melanie C and Lemar-and there are also brief guidance segments on topics such as whether it's safe to sing with a cold. Critics might say that a programme such as this simply encourages more second-rate karaoke singers to dream of pop stardom; but at the very least it might ensure that future pop-reality shows aren't short of talent. On the DVD: You Can Sing's somewhat lacklustre main feature is boosted by the interactivity of the extra material included on the disc. The songs "Angels" and "Beautiful" can be practised at home in karaoke-fashion, with the lyrics flashed on to the screen. There's also the opportunity to feel what it's like to perform in front of a roaring live crowd. [+]
The interviews with the star graduate can be watched in their entirety via the bonus material menu and the short feature on correctly holding a hair brush as if it is a microphone is fun and informative. -John Galilee.
