Review ABBA - The Definitive Collection [2002] / Universal Island:

ABBA were one of the first pop groups to exploit the promotional video as a vehicle for publicising their music across the globe. ABBA-The Definitive Collection provides an audio-visual timeline of how their promos developed over a 10-year period from the mid-1970s to the early 80s. The first ABBA videos were simple recordings of the band miming to their songs in a studio ("Waterloo" and "Ring Ring"); then, for "Mamma Mia" and "SOS", the style was replaced by something more adventurous, focusing on the four grouped together in rival pairs. As technology and the group evolved so did their promo films, with more recent examples shot on videotape and incorporating post-production special effects and outdoor locations ("One Of Us" and "Head over Heels"). Director Lasse Hallstrom has since made the transition from these relatively low-budget vehicles to Hollywood success with Chocolat and The Shipping News. If ABBA's early efforts look a little primitive compared to big-budget modern music promos, the songs themselves now sound even better than ever, having been digitally re-mastered in 24-bit format. As well as featuring the digitally re-mastered promos for the majority of their single releases, exclusive previously unreleased material is also incorporated here, such as the extended original mix of "On and On and On". On the DVD: ABBA-The Definitive Collection on DVD squeezes in all 30 videos, plus five bonus tracks which include the promos for the Spanish-language versions of "I Have a Dream", "Happy New Year" and "When All is Said and Done". The video for the never released "When I Kissed the Teacher" is also included, too, as is a camp recording of "Dancing Queen" filmed at a gala tribute for Sweden's King and Queen. The 20-minute picture gallery is an excellent and comprehensive photographic record of the group through the years. [+]
Background information about all of the material, is discussed in the accompanying biographical booklet. -John Galilee.

Review Kevin And Perry Go Large (2000) / Icon Home Entertainment:

A pair of pubescent boys in all their spotty and obnoxious glory whose boundless lust for coolness and girls is matched only by their bottomless ineptitude at achieving these goals, Kevin (Harry Enfield) and Perry (Kathy Burke) were two regular characters in Harry Enfield and Chums, a successful BBC sketch show. Over the three minutes or so one of their television sketches would run in each episode, Kevin and Perry were hilarious comic creations, but their antics severely test the patience spread out over 82 minutes. The script is a pretty flimsy excuse for a series of intermittently amusing gags about Ibiza beach culture (a worthy target), the sexual excitability of teenage boys and bodily excrescences of various kinds. Our heroes set off for the sun to lose their virginities and debut their bedroom mixed single, "All I Want to Do Is Do It". They meet the girls of their dreams, and a truly loathsome club DJ (the seemingly ubiquitous Rhys Ifans, without whom no bad British film could do without) and enjoy the fleshpots of beach life. It all starts to feel like a shabby stab at aping the success of such recent classic American gross-out comedies as American Pie and There's Something About Mary but without their emotional range (no, really, we're serious here) or ludic inventiveness. Nevertheless, it does have its moments, like the epic spot-squeezing sequence, a triumph of squelchy turpitude, and Kathy Burke is magnificent as ever cross-dressing as Perry, the quiet, slack-jawed one with the really, really bad posture and a major case of the hots for Kevin's mum. -Leslie Felperin.

Review Detroit Rock City [1999] / Entertainment in Video:

It's hard to call Detroit Rock City a "coming of age" movie-since it's hard to argue that any of the characters do any genuine growing up. But even though it's about four young metalheads trying to get to a Kiss concert, the movie actually has more in common with sincere portraits of adolescence than it does with raucous teen comedies. The four heroes are members of a teen metal band called Mystery (written in the same font as the letters of Kiss, lest anyone mistake their source of inspiration). After the drummer's religiously zealous mother burns their tickets to a long-awaited concert in nearby Detroit, the boys go anyway and try to get tickets through theft, skullduggery, and entering a male stripper contest. The jokes are broad and the movie culminates in an orgy of male adolescent wish-fulfilment, but here and there some loving attention is paid to the details of 1970s teenage life-the haircuts, clothes, and toys the film-makers probably had when they were kids. Edward Furlong (John Connor from Terminator 2, now grown up) as the band's singer exudes his particular lopsided charm; the rest of the cast play their parts with similar high spirits. Though Detroit Rock City was probably meant to be a no-holds-barred comedy in the vein of American Pie, the end result is curiously wistful; no one's going to mistake it for The Last Picture Show, but something sincere and elegiac lurks in those bang-covered eyes. -Bret Fetzer, Amazon. com:On the DVD: Director Adam Rifkin gives a chaotic but funny commentary about a subject clearly dear to his heart; Gene Simmons is more level-headed but no less fascinating in his own commentary as he talks about his transition from a naive nine-year-old immigrant from Israel to the extravagant showman of Kiss. Hardcore Kiss fans will also appreciate another commentary track in which the other members of the band are interviewed on the telephone by associate producer Tim Sullivan. [+]
There's a good "making of" featurette with contributions from all involved. Four deleted scenes show how certain sections were cut for length, and you can also watch the complete "Detroit Rock City" concert footage. Also included are two original music videos: Everclear's cover of "The Boys Are Back in Town", and "Strutter" by The Donnas. The movie's trailer and cast and crew biographies round off a good DVD package. -Mark Walker.

Review Jean Michel Jarre - Jarre In China (2 DVDs and Live CD Album) / Warner Music Vision:

In 1981 Jean Michel Jarre was invited by the Chinese government to become the first western musician to perform in the People's Republic of China. Performing 5 concerts in Beijing and Shanghai the tour encountered numerous problems including arriving at an arena to find only one power socket and having to buy back concert tickets from stone-faced VIPs and redistribute them free to the Chinese public. October 2004 and Jarre returns to Beijing with 70 tonnes of equipment to open China's "Year of France" cultural exchange with an outdoor concert. Choosing a picturesque location at Wumen Gate in the Forbidden City, Jarre performed with both modern and traditional Chinese Orchestras, choir, opera singers, and several guest musicians including Chen Lin, and guitarist Patrick Rondat. Jarre was prevented from performing with China's Cui Jian whose songs were sung by student demonstrators in 1989. Filmed in high definition and presented in 5. 1 DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound (both at the concert and on DVD) the complete concert is presented. It looks and sounds fantastic, in no small part due to the THX mastering, a first for a music DVD. Jarre makes extensive use of new photographic projections on giant 3D inflatable screens, the laser harp, Theremin, and midi flute. The music is varied but would have benefited from band musicians on stage as the music sounds all too similar to the recent "Aero" album apart from some Chinese instrumentation. [+]
Jarre looks lonely on stage and recounts a similar track listing from the last 8 years. Highlights include "Voyage to Beijing" as well as the essential "Souvenir of China" and a highly orchestrated "Rendez Vous 2. " Straight after the concert in the Forbidden City, Jarre travels by motorbike through the audience to Tian'anmen Sqaure where he played a small number of songs to the expectant Chinese crowd. A great idea to play a second concert, but a missed opportunity to play some better tracks like "Eldorado" or "Chronologie 4. " Instead of remaking Edith Piaf's "La Foule" in Chinese, a better choice might have an adaptation of Jarre's own "C'est La Vie. " The package includes a photo gallery and commentary from the composer. The making-of documentary is the icing on the cake, showing how hands-on Jarre is with all aspects of production, from trimming some trees to the lighting design. The included live CD album doesn't add anything for those who have already bought the Aero album. Jarre's work deserves to be on the DVD format and this is a highly presented premiere from a special event. -Colin Neal.
