It's been said that Diana Krall is a more successful recording artist than she is a live performer, yet Live in Paris seems to have captured the best of both worlds. Krall has evolved into a performer of extraordinary intensity. She treats what is essentially a set of jazz vocal standards as a kind of musical performance poetry which reflects the subtlest nuance of every lyric; while her dark, seemingly effortless contralto is a near-perfect jazz instrument. This performance features Krall's regular band plus a vast orchestra that tends to detract (and subtract) from her under-rated piano playing, but there are still any number of highlights, such as "All or Nothing at All" and "'S Wonderful". On the DVD: the additional features on this 16:9 DVD (which has stereo, DTS and Dolby surround audio options and which is PS2 compatible) are mostly excellent. The rehearsal footage is almost better than the concert, and some of Krall's interpretations bring knowing smiles to the faces of some of the female members of the orchestra. Of the two rather MTV-friendly video features, the first (for "The Look of Love") is superb; while the second (for "Let's Face the Music and Dance"), all aggressive lighting and nasty makeup, has Krall clumping around like a big-boned drag queen, but it's really the only fault in an otherwise perfect release. -Roger Thomas.

Touted as "a movie about people who do stuff that is not normal", Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes chronicles a late-70s Halloween stand in New York City (a zany enough proceeding in its own right) with digressions throughout the first half for backstage antics, band interviews and some outlandish clay animation from Bruce Bickford, with whose work Zappa was obviously smitten. Onstage, Zappa is a live wire, the audience is appropriately rambunctious and the band-an especially potent incarnation of the famous Mothers of Invention-is tight as could be. The film amounts to a three-hour musical carnival whose participants show no trace of artistic or personal inhibition. Zappa, who died in 1993, always worked with consummate musicians and Baby Snakes showcases the cream of the crop: Terry Bozzio (one of the greatest drummers ever to command a kit), bassist Patrick O'Hearn, keyboard wizard Tommy Mars and even pop chameleon Adrian Belew. Zappa's intelligence and charisma are undeniable, flickering and blazing every second he's on screen. The progressive-leaning rock and jazz music is frequently interrupted for meandering spoken interludes and it's certainly not for all tastes. But Frank Zappa was a force to behold and Baby Snakes offers a unique cultural education for anyone bold enough to give it a spin. "Without deviation," Zappa wrote, "progress is not possible". Baby Snakes is one of Frank's most fervent contributions to progress. -Michael Mikesell.

Review Oasis - Familiar To Millions [2000] / Big Brother:

Recorded at their 2000 Wembley dates, Familiar To Millions celebrates not just nearly a decade of dominance by the Oasis lads but also the fact that it is still actually possible to get them on the same stage at the same time. Moreover, while the band certainly had their troubles prior to arriving at the Twin Towers (not least Noel Gallagher's decision to stay at home for many European dates), this finds all concerned on blistering form with even the newer band members sounding like they were born to play with the monobrowed ones. The chosen set list also wisely skimps on selections from their recent work preferring instead to concentrate on the likes of "Cigarettes And Alcohol", "Wonderwall", "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Champagne Supernova" and a superb Noel-sung version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". The actual concert footage itself, though, is the only the tip of the iceberg, with special features including a discography, graphics that were specially filmed for the dates, multicamera angles on Cigarettes & Alcohol and a documentary by Grant Gee, previously responsible for Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy documentary. The most entertaining aspect of this DVD by far, however, is a Gary Crowley-conducted pre-gig interview with the siblings in which ex-cokehead Noel gleefully admits that he can remember absolutely nothing whatsoever about recording (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. -Warren Wayans.
