Review Pink Floyd - The Making of The Dark Side Of The Moon [2003] / Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd:

The most phenomenal recording in rock & roll history is thoroughly examined in Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon. The Floyd's 1973 masterpiece remained on bestseller charts for nearly 14 years, and its enduring importance is honoured here by all four members of Pink Floyd and key personnel (engineer Alan Parsons, mixing supervisor Chris Thomas, sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson and others) who played essential roles in the landmark album's creation. Produced for the Classic Albums series, this thorough and thought-provoking study highlights a track-by-track dissection of the LP's master tapes (including the spoken-word passages that bookend the album), superbly interlaced with archival footage, early demo tapes, concert animations and latter-day acoustic performances by David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright to demonstrate each track's contribution to the final mix-a sonic exploration that extends to the illuminating bonus features. Informative interviews abound (including Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke), and much-deserved credit is given to saxophonist Dick Parry, solo vocalist Clare Torry and former Columbia Records chairman Bhaskar Menon, who fostered the album's US commercial success. For Floyd fans, musicians and studio technicians alike, this is a must-have addition to any DVD library. -Jeff Shannon.

Review The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby [1982] / Metrodome Distribution:

This Nicholas Nickleby is not one of Hollywood's condensed versions, it's the Royal Shakespeare Company's epic eight-and-a-half-hour adaptation of the life and times of the eponymous school-teacher. The 1982 production (originally staged in two parts) won worldwide acclaim and was such a success that Britain's then-newest TV station, Channel 4, launched a joint venture with independent production company Primetime to bring Nicholas Nickleby to a television audience. The result is this wonderfully theatrical version, filmed at the Old Vic and starring much of the original stage cast. It manages to stay true to Trevor Nunn's original artistic vision of Dickens's damning incitement of England's educational system. The ensemble cast are superb: Roger Rees as Nicholas is a bright-eyed idealist, every inch the young romantic hero whose principles are often his downfall, but ultimately his salvation; Fulton Mackay's twisted, embittered Squeers is every inch the Dickensian villain; and David Threlfall is transformed as Smike, Squeers' piteously subjugated, crippled servant and gives the most moving performances of his career. This enthralling TV adaptation recreates the magic of the stage version for all those who were unable to catch it on its pitifully short run. It doesn't pull any punches as the humour and inspiring storyline are tempered with real dark and tragic episodes. Forget the Hollywood fluff, this is the version you should watch if you want a faithful retelling of Dickens's story. -Kristen Bowditch.

Review Westlife - Where Dreams Come True [2001] / Sony Bmg:

"Out of this world" is probably the best way to describe the style and content of Westlife's home-coming live performance in Dublin, Where Dreams Come True. It's also a fair description (in the inter-galactic sense) of the short film that opens the concert, when Shane, Kian, Mike, Nicky and Bryan are beamed down to Earth (or more precisely to their native Ireland) from deepest space. Decked out in white for the opening and closing segments of the concert it's easy to see why some fans view the five guys as modern-day angels. Appropriately for the song "Flying Without Wings" the guys manage to perform the song strapped to a scaffolding hoist that gently floats above the audience. Overall the concert is a spectacular all-singing, all-dancing affair that showcases their biggest hits and selected album tracks, aided by an amazing set and stage effects. In places the performance does seem rather twee, especially their rural-themed rendition of "Seasons of the Sun" when the group emerge from behind the set decked in stylish country-wear. The moves performed by the all-female dance troupe to "I Have a Dream" are also plain awful. Tour favourites "When You're Looking Like That" and "Uptown Girl" are the hot highlights of this stunning live release. On The DVD: there are plenty of added extras on this DVD including two documentaries, "Access All Areas" and "World of Our Own". However, neither of these featurettes represent the group in a particularly positive light, with the boys spending most of their time crowing about the numerous number ones they've had and how wonderful they are. [+]
The "Access All Areas" documentary depicts the guys in a particularly cruel light-playing football outside their concert arena whilst fans torturously watch on behind a wire fence. The exclusive When Dreams Come True website, which can only be accessed through the DVD-Rom link, is amazing though, with state-of-the-art graphics, animations and content (eg: lyrics of top Westlife songs, multi-media biographies and interviews with the guys). Look out for the bonus music video for "When You're Looking Like That" (never released as a single in the UK). -John Galilee.

Review Warner Music Vision / Page And Plant - No Quarter Unledded [1995] Release date: 2004-10-11

Review Page And Plant - No Quarter Unledded [1995] / Warner Music Vision:

Decades after the death of drummer John Bonham and, for all intents and purposes, the demise of the group, Led Zeppelin's popularity continues unabated-and why not, as long as they keep coming up with offerings as worthy as No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded. Originally released on CD in 1994 and then in a remastered version simultaneously with this DVD, the 115-minute program (including bonus footage) was recorded on a London soundstage, in the hills of Snowdonia, Wales, and outdoors in Marrakech, Morocco. It finds guitarist Page, vocalist Plant, and an array of other musicians performing some new material, but for the most part, the repertoire focuses on their Led Zep legacy-not a surprise, considering that what they did together in that group was better than anything they've done separately, including some pretty good Plant solo efforts and Page's regrettable stint as a member of the Firm. Yet instead of simply parroting their Zeppelin period (and relying on tired warhorses like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love"), they've given the music new life, adding exotic instruments like the bodhran (an Irish drum) and the hurdy-gurdy (played by cranking a rosined wheel against a set of strings) to less familiar fare like "The Battle of Evermore" and "Gallows Pole. " Add to that three brilliant new songs performed with a quartet of Moroccan players, a full complement of strings from the London Metropolitan Orchestra (on "Since I've Been Loving You" and others), and a host of Egyptian percussion and strings on an epic version of "Kashmir" (also from the London session), and you've got a world music blend that is at times genuinely thrilling-especially for those with 5. 1 Surround Sound capability. -Sam Graham.

Review Warner Music Vision / Muse - Hullabaloo [DTS] [2001] Release date: 2003-09-22
Run time: 128 min.
RRP: £24.99

Review Muse - Hullabaloo [DTS] [2001] / Warner Music Vision:

Muse have stormed into the public eye in recent years with albums offering an onslaught of guitars, keys and drum riffs that hark back to the days of 1970s prog-rock. Hullaballo shows them at their best, within an energetic live performance of the kind that first drew them to the public and media's attention. Filmed towards the end of their intense 2001 tour at Le Zenith, Paris, this gig is full of high-powered chords and dramatic instrument torture as the lads pump through songs from their three albums including tracks from the B-side album Hullaballo, released to coincide with the DVD. From "Sunburn" and "New Born" to the finale of "Bliss", the band powers through a 90-minute set filmed from a multitude of angles. The montage of audience vs stage action offers not so much a sense of being at the gig in person, more an omnipresent sensation, getting up close and personal with the band while being hit by an onslaught of colours and split frames. The camera does tend to fall out of focus on occasions, but this just complements the raw sound of the gig. 2001 was not just Muse's year but the year when British rock gained a much-needed injection of energy after years of indie shoegazing. On the DVD: Hullaballo is offered with a DTS or Dolby 5. 1 surround sound, which can only lead to one thing: air guitar in the living room. Along with the 16:9 picture format, this DVD really does blow you away with the sheer power of the band's live performance. [+]
Disc one offers the concert footage along with track listings allowing you to flip to your favourite song. Disc two offers a selection of extra features and footage. The worst of these is the 40-minute film on the band's on and off-stage shenanigans, which looks as if a film student had just found a "cool" new feature on his digital camera (though the superb impression of Slipknot is not to be missed). The "Discography" is truly unique as it doesn't just list the albums, it also plays excerpts. The "Front Cover" section offers a host of magazine cover shots showing just how far the threesome have come in the past year; not just in Britain but across the world. -Nikki Disney.
