Review Guns n' Roses - Guns 'n' Roses - Welcome To The Videos [1992] / Universal Island:Welcome to the Videos provides a baker's dozen of Guns 'n' Roses' most explosive and memorable music videos from 1987 to 1993, and what a lesson they provide in the early evolution of visual style on MTV. Looking back, it seems Guns n' Roses embraced almost every type of music-video setting: "Welcome to the Jungle", for instance, finds rapid images of the band's stage performance interspersed with a semi-narrative featuring Axle Rose as a newcomer to the big bad city; "Paradise City" is set against an arena sound check, while "Sweet Child O' Mine" is structured around the now-threadbare idea of a video documentary about a video production. A couple of obsessive themes emerge from this anthology, the starkest involving love and watery deaths ("Don't Cry" and "November Rain"). Most interesting are the opiate-like distortions of "The Garden" and the surreal "Since I Don't Have You", starring Gary Oldman as a grinning devil. -Tom Keogh.

Review Fosse [2001] / Warner Music Vision:Fosse was the Broadway hit of 1999, celebrating the genius of legendary film-and-stage choreographer Bob Fosse in a rich, fiery homage with the very best of his work. This performance, recorded towards the end of a run that lasted more than two years, captures perfectly the energy and commitment of the dancers in bringing the extraordinary shapes and angles of his choreography to life. The presence of Fosse's protégés, cochoreographer Ann Reinking and that most fluid of dancers Ben Vereen, ensures that the spirit and dedication at the heart of Fosse's work are preserved intact. This is no opportunist "best-of" compilation. The numbers merge seamlessly into a glorious patchwork of movements and moods. Fosse took up the reigns of musical theatre dance from Astaire, Kelly and Balanchine and, thanks to the changing times and material-Sweet Charity, Chicago and Cabaret loom large-was able to inject a new, raw sexuality which these dancers seize with relish. It's a resolutely ensemble piece. Musical buffs may be disappointed by the lack of big solo numbers-Vereen's poignant "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" aside-but in many ways this is also a long overdue celebration of the chorus line. Fosse treated his dancers as individuals, each with a contribution to make. That attention to detail makes for moments of terrific intensity amongst the full-blooded company numbers. [+]
On the DVD: Fosse makes a lavish televisual production, presented in 16:9 format-great for covering the width of the stage-and a choice of stereo or surround-sound audio. Some multiple viewing angles would have been nice, if only to get a different perspective on the complex moves. The only extra is a short interview with Ann Reinking, Ben Vereen and Dana Moore in which all three testify to the importance of Fosse both to their own careers and as an all-time giant talent of musical theatre. -Piers Ford.

Review Josh Groban in Concert (DVD & bonus CD) [2002] (NTSC) / Wmv:Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a middle-of-the-road hit: a young, good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (think Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream crowd; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centrepiece of this DVD/CD combo is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena, California, in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You", which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs-the ballad "Broken Vow" accompanied by Foster, and "For Always", with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A. I. The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night". The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5. 1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. -David Horiuchi.

Review Robbie Williams - What We Did Last Summer - Robbie Williams Live At Knebworth [2003] / EMI:What We Did Last Summer records the three August days in 2003 in which (it seemed) most of the Home Counties converged on rural Hertfordshire for Robbie Williams's record-breaking Knebworth gigs. For the 375,000 fans (or pilgrims) who endured the massive traffic jams and the sweltering heat to attend the concerts, Williams is their pop messiah-an image the star seems content to cultivate throughout the two-hour set. Opening the concert in the style of another who wowed the masses, the stage curtains fall to reveal Robbie hanging upside down like Houdini in an escapologist costume; and like that master showman, Williams manages to keep his audience spellbound too. Despite the tens of thousands at the gig, Robbie does his best to interact with the audience, utilising his charm in an almost impossible attempt to persuade the masses that he's performing individually to each and every one of them. Various items of Robbie's attire are thrown into the audience, and one good-looking female fan is pulled from the front row, an event that Mr Williams uses to his own benefit by consensually sticking his tongue down her throat. He also takes advantage of the size of the audience and the fading light, by requesting that those with cameras use them at the exact same moment. Like a galaxy of pulsating stars, the camera flashes look spectacular, an effect that could only have been witnessed at the time by those lucky enough to be on stage. Consisting mainly of greatest hits and tracks from Escapology, the show connects the familiar with the lesser-known songs. Nonetheless, despite this mix of old and new, there's a slight air of weariness about the gig. Maybe it's the plethora of other Robbie DVDs available, his sheer over-familiarity, or perhaps, as the star himself suggests, now that he's reached the pinnacle of his career he has nowhere else to go. [+]
Only time will tell whether the fans stay loyal, but this concert provides an excellent memento of Robbie on top. On the DVD: What We Did Last Summer has the two-hour gig on the first disc, presented with a choice of spectacular sound options: DTS 5. 1, Dolby Digital 5. 1 or Stereo. The second disc, frankly, has a paltry amount of bonus material that takes up a fraction of the potential space available. The DVD-ROM extras should also come with a health warning, particularly the PC sound effects/clips, which have the potential to test the patience of a saint. Luckily there are a number of hidden extras including Robbie's legendary live performance of "Back for Good" with former Take That bandmate Mark Owen. -John Galilee.

Review U2 - Rattle and Hum [1988] / Paramount Home Entertainment:Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2's career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined, from blues and gospel to early rock 'n' roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and BB King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.
