Review Universal Island / ABBA - In Concert [1979] Release date: 2004-03-29
RRP: £14.99
Price: £7.46

Review ABBA - In Concert [1979] / Universal Island:

The title ABBA-In Concert is perhaps a little misleading in promising something a bit more "live" than is actually delivered. While this "official" TV film provides a fascinating insight into ABBA's 1979 tour of North America and Europe, the first segment of the 50-minute documentary is given over almost exclusively to behind-the-scenes material. As the film progresses and the action shifts from the US to London's Wembley, more live performance footage is included such as full length renditions of "Chiquitita", "Dancing Queen" and "Summer Night City". Made by Swedish television company SVT, and released for the first time on DVD in 2004 to coincide with ABBA's 30th anniversary, Urban Lasson's film begins by charting the group's attempts to crack the US. Rather than using a narrator to guide the viewer through the scenes, the film competently uses stylish images to tell the story of the group's trip across the continent. Recorded at the height of the disco era, the American footage is dominated by images of roller skaters, and some of the live material from the Wembley shows was shot by a roller-skating cameraman, so that he could move more quickly on stage to get the best shots. The four split just a couple of years after this tour, making the film one of a few quality recordings of the band playing live. It's a shame that additional full performances of other ABBA favourites were not recorded, or included in the final cut. However the disc does include previously unreleased DVD footage of "The Way Old Friends Do", "I Have A Dream" (Unedited Live Version) and "Thank You For The Music" to partially compensate for this. On the DVD:As well as the bonus concert performances, the DVD includes recently recorded interviews with the film director Urban Lasson, and the promoter and tour producer Thomas Johansson. [+]
A tour souvenir programme picture gallery is also included, and the disc comes with a 28-page colour booklet, which features an excellent extended essay by Carl Magnus Palm on the making of the film. The soundtrack has been painstakingly remastered in 5. 1 Surround Sound, making the live performances sound stunning. -John Galilee.

Review The Beatles : Anthology [1995] / EMI:

The Beatles Anthology was initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to run alongside the series of three Anthology double-CD albums. This set of eight documentaries has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns' expansive projects. Still, you may find yourself with more material-particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool-than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years-beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970-feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs", the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. This box set gives a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. -Marshall Fine.

Review Madonna - Drowned World Tour Live [2001] / Warner Music Vision:

The Queen of Pop has done it again and offered her fans and music impresarios alike a musical performance to be remembered. Madonna: Drowned World Tour-filmed in her home town of Detroit on August 26, 2001-is an amazing pop concert and a visually stunning modern-dance and multi-media piece encompassing all the recent incarnations of this chameleon-like performer. Never one to shy away from championing new styles, both in clothes and music, Madonna is still as raunchy as she was on her Erotica tour, but the Drowned World Tour also offers a much more effeminate and intelligent side to her performance. This time we see a Geisha/Japanese performance during "Frozen" and a jokey southern-belle line-dancing romp during "Don't Tell Me". The monarch of performance has also discovered the best way to undergo an elaborate costume change without keeping your audience waiting-simply ply them with stunningly directed music videos on a multitude of screens and hang two solitary male dancers upside down to perform feats of dance perfection. This truly impressive show holds as much for Madonna fans as it does for anyone who is interested in studying modern performance and dance routines-and Madonna is certainly well versed enough to teach in this field with almost 20 successful years in the business. The Drowned World Tour-rumoured to be her last live show-goes to prove that Madonna still reigns supreme. On the DVD: Although the special features are hardly a ray of light-simply an impressive photo gallery and some Web links-the picture and sound on this DVD are excellent. As a champion of all things new Madonna's DVD uses a picture perfect format of 4:3, and superb sound quality: with a choice of Dolby Digital 2. 0, 5. [+]
1 and DTS 5. 1 you'll feel like you're at the concert in a prime seat. Another impressive feature is the ability to view the song lyrics, allowing you to strut around your living room like a prima donna with this glamorous version of Karaoke! -Nikki Disney.

Review Muse - Hullabaloo [DTS] [2001] / Warner Music Vision:

Muse have stormed into the public eye in recent years with albums offering an onslaught of guitars, keys and drum riffs that hark back to the days of 1970s prog-rock. Hullaballo shows them at their best, within an energetic live performance of the kind that first drew them to the public and media's attention. Filmed towards the end of their intense 2001 tour at Le Zenith, Paris, this gig is full of high-powered chords and dramatic instrument torture as the lads pump through songs from their three albums including tracks from the B-side album Hullaballo, released to coincide with the DVD. From "Sunburn" and "New Born" to the finale of "Bliss", the band powers through a 90-minute set filmed from a multitude of angles. The montage of audience vs stage action offers not so much a sense of being at the gig in person, more an omnipresent sensation, getting up close and personal with the band while being hit by an onslaught of colours and split frames. The camera does tend to fall out of focus on occasions, but this just complements the raw sound of the gig. 2001 was not just Muse's year but the year when British rock gained a much-needed injection of energy after years of indie shoegazing. On the DVD: Hullaballo is offered with a DTS or Dolby 5. 1 surround sound, which can only lead to one thing: air guitar in the living room. Along with the 16:9 picture format, this DVD really does blow you away with the sheer power of the band's live performance. [+]
Disc one offers the concert footage along with track listings allowing you to flip to your favourite song. Disc two offers a selection of extra features and footage. The worst of these is the 40-minute film on the band's on and off-stage shenanigans, which looks as if a film student had just found a "cool" new feature on his digital camera (though the superb impression of Slipknot is not to be missed). The "Discography" is truly unique as it doesn't just list the albums, it also plays excerpts. The "Front Cover" section offers a host of magazine cover shots showing just how far the threesome have come in the past year; not just in Britain but across the world. -Nikki Disney.
