Review Brotherhood of the Wolf [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Universal Studios:If you crave an over-the-top historical kung fu-fantasy epic with a good dose of voluptuous nudity, bravura machismo, and passions so intense they verge on ridiculous, then Brotherhood of the Wolf is for you. Based (loosely) on an 18th-century legend, this French film follows a hunky scientist (Samuel Le Bihan) and his Iroquois sidekick/spiritual partner (Mark Dacascos) as they pursue a monstrous wolf ravaging the French countryside. Along the way Le Bihan gets entwined with a beautiful noblewoman (Emilie Dequenne) and a gorgeous prostitute (Monica Belluci) with secrets to tell. The plot grows more and more incomprehensible, but the mix of torrid emotions, outrageous action sequences, and lurid titillation is really what the movie is about. Ignore the highbrow philosophising and confused political intrigue; just enjoy the sensual images. -Bret Fetzer On the DVD: Brotherhood of the Wolf is a film which revels in excess, yet the extra features on the disc are surprisingly sparse. The DVD boasts a programme on the legend of the Beast of the Gevaudan, as well as the original theatrical trailer, which was obviously geared towards an American audience-all action, no (French) dialogue. Unfortunately, though the DVD gives the viewer the option of watching the film in French (with English subtitles) or dubbed in English, only the dubbed version has Dolby 5. 1 sound. Viewers who want to watch this film in its original language are forced to settle for 2. [+]

Review Enter the Dragon [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Warner Home Video:One of the most successful martial arts movies of all time, if not the best, Enter the Dragon (filmed in 1973) was Bruce Lee's last completed film and the first significant meeting of Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema. But it wasn't an entirely harmonious marriage, with on-set communication breakdowns and rows resulting in some poor scripting, editing and overdubbing. Lee plays a Shaolin fighter recruited by British intelligence to spy on renegade Shaolin master and crime overlord Han (Shih Kien) by entering the martial arts tournament held on Han's fortress island. If the plot sounds a touch contrived, it is. Han's fluffy white cat, clawed hand and ruthless megalomania suggest nothing so much as a classic Bond villain, and the plot has holes you could pilot a large Junk through (Lee's discovery that his sister committed suicide rather than submit herself to Han's men is particularly weak). Nonetheless, Lee is utterly compelling. At the height of his skills, he choreographed, directed and performed fight scenes which are among the most gripping ever filmed, including the classic underground scene which, in this uncut version, contains Lee's incredible (and previously deleted) nun-chuck display. John Saxon and karate champion Jim Kelly ably support him as fellow contestants, with the massive Yang Sze playing Bolo, Han's lieutenant. Despite being cheesy and overblown, Enter the Dragon is a highly entertaining and accessible Kung Fu film and a showcase for Bruce Lee's considerable skills. -Duncan Thomson.

Review Ninja Scroll [1986] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Manga Video:A peak achievement of Japanese anime, Ninja Scroll is a propulsive mix of samurai action-adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City). This is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language. (Students of Japanese language could pick up some useful expressions. ) The plot sounds like a 16th-century variation on The X-Files: an entire village has been wiped out by a mysterious plague and an antigovernment conspiracy of invulnerable demons seems to be responsible. A wandering ninja, Jubei, and his female counterpart, Kagero, team up to defeat the plotters. Jubei is a classic reluctant hero, agreeing to participate in the mission only after being fed a slow-acting poison; the antidote will be supplied after he cooperates. And Kagero, a looker whose embrace is lethal, is a femme fatale with a difference that seems distinctively Japanese: sexual contact itself is poisonous, especially for a warrior with a pure soul. -David Chute.
