In the weeks after The Blair Witch Project transformed from cult independent horror movie legend to Cinderella-story blockbuster, it seemed that everyone and his brother had their own copycat in the works. The Erotic Witch Project wins the dubious honour as the first finished parody out of the woods and onto home video. This silly soft-core spoof follows the adventures of three college girls who take a couple of video cameras into the woods to find the legendary erotic witch. After finding sex toys and anatomically correct stick figures mysteriously left outside their tents, their clothes are stolen (along with the map) and they wander naked through the woods, haunted by spooky sounds but too busy making out to worry about it. "I'm so horny, and I'm so scared at the same time", confesses one girl in a parody of Heather's famous direct confession in the original. Just for fun there is also a completely unexplained guy in a bad gorilla suit running around with a blow-up doll who picks up the camera when the girls are too busy getting it on to tape themselves. More ludicrous than funny, it's less a movie than high-concept (though low-budget) video centrefold, but once in a while the gags hit and for a few brief moments the parody actually works. -Sean Axmaker.

Review Blood and Black Lace [1966] / Vci Video:

This delirious mix of sex, sadism and style has a masked man stalking the gorgeous mannequins of a Roman high fashion house, murdering them in a strikingly fetishist manner and then leaving the corpses to be discovered like grisly works of art. Mario Bava's 1964 film, originally titled Sei donne per l'assassino, is one of the earliest slasher movies, and remains a suspenseful, disturbing and oddly seductive film. The complex, lurid plot features blackmail, murder for profit, drug addiction and scandal among the beautiful people. Smooth Cameron Mitchell and lovely Eva Bartok are the conspirators, pursued by a plodding Columbo-style detective. However, Bava goes beyond the world of Agatha Christie or Edgar Wallace to embrace the surreal and the nightmarish. Each murder is handled like a musical number, with elaborate camera moves, striking colour effects and a strangely memorable jazz score. There is certainly more than a tinge of misogyny in the treatment of actresses as disposable dummies, but the plot is equally cynical about its grasping, feeble, suspicious male characters. This welcome video release-more complete than any previous UK edition-is letterboxed to show off the cinematography and, most importantly, preserves Bava's astonishingly rich colour effects. -Kim Newman.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer-Season 6 begins with Buffy being raised from the dead by the friends who miss her, but who fail to understand that a sacrifice taken back is a sacrifice negated. Dragged out of what she believes to have been heavenly bliss, she finds herself "going through the motions" and entering into a relationship with the evil, besotted vampire Spike just to force her emotions. Willow becomes ever more caught up in the temptations of magic; Xander and Anya move towards marriage without ever discussing their reservations; Giles feels he is standing in the way of Buffy's adult independence; Dawn feels neglected. What none of them need is a menace that is, at this point, simply annoying-three high school contemporaries who have turned their hand to magical and high-tech villainy. Added to this is a hungry ghost, an invisibility ray, an amnesia spell and a song-and-dance demon (who acts as rationale for the incomparable musical episode "Once More With Feeling" presented here in its full extra-length version). The result is a Buffy season which fans may not entirely have loved, but could not ignore. -Roz Kaveney.

Britain's Hammer Studios had been making films for decades before they suddenly redefined themselves with this lurid remake of the Universal Studios horror classic. Prohibited by Universal from copying their blocky make-up (and their script, for that matter), Hammer returned to Mary Shelley's novel for inspiration and then went in its own direction. Peter Cushing plays Dr. Frankenstein as the rational scientist turned cold-blooded criminal in his campaign to discover the secret of life, committing murder to further his ends or to remove an inconvenient mistress. Christopher Lee is the pitiable creature, a terrified behemoth more innocent new-born than malevolent monster. His pale, pallid, grotesquely scarred face was so thickly applied that he emotes almost exclusively with his eyes and his awkward, stumbling gestures. The not-so-good Dr. Frankenstein is the true monster, a ruthless scientist whose rejection of superstition extends to all moral considerations. Shot in blood-red colour by Hammer stalwart Terence Fisher, the stylish, often salacious film became Hammer's biggest success to date, made horror stars out of the classically trained Cushing and Lee, and transformed the B studio into the Hammer we know and love today: the house that dripped blood. The Horror of Dracula immediately followed, reuniting the winning team of Cushing and Lee, and Cushing returned in four of six Frankenstein sequels. [+]
