Review Lake Placid [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:Lake Placid is total trash-and, as a result, pretty entertaining. Yet another entry in the horror sub-genre of giant animals running amok, the movie features a giant crocodile that has somehow found its way to an isolated lake in Maine. The absurdity of crocodiles in Maine sets the tone for the entire movie, which has no ambitions beyond mixing a little fright with a little humour (Curiously, this concoction was put together by David E Kelley, better known as the creator of TV's Ally McBeal and The Practice). Bridget Fonda plays a palaeontologist sent to investigate a large tooth; Bill Pullman is a fish and game warden just trying to keep the peace; Oliver Platt plays a loose-cannon mythology professor who swims with crocodiles for sport; and Brendan Gleeson is a local sheriff with a short temper and a big gun. Add a few gruesome dismemberments, Betty White as a cantankerous old broad who may have murdered her husband, and a cow hanging from a helicopter, and there you have it: Lake Placid. -Bret Fetzer, Amazon. com.

Review Willow [1988] / 2 Entertain Video:Billed as a fantasy to please kids and adults alike in 1988, Willow was revolutionary in its day. Not only did it have a vertically challenged actor (Warwick Davis) as its leading man, it also set new standards for special effects, using the first known "morfing" (sic) systems. To top it all off it combined the talents of two of Hollywood's biggest names, director Ron Howard and writer-producer George Lucas, and changed Val Kilmer's destiny, influencing both his career and love life. In theory all this should have added up to a rip-roaring success of a film. Alas, the end result has been unkindly if accurately described as the bastard son of Lord of the Rings, with Star Wars as its doting mother. The plot line (plucky young man sent off on a quest to protect something which could change the reign of evil) has obvious links to Tolkien's classic; Kilmer's Madmartigan (the diamond in the rough) has distinct similarities to Hans Solo. And with the great advances in modern cinemas special effects, Willow's ferocious two-headed dragons now look like something out of 1963's Jason and the Argonauts. However, even though it marked the end of the road for fantasy films in the 1980s, Willow's combination of locations, set design and groundbreaking SFX set new standards and influenced much modern cinema, including Peter Jackson's epic Lord of the Rings. All in all, this is a movie with its heart, soul and magic in the right place. On the DVD: Willow is brought up to date on DVD with this excellent special effects enhancing anamorphic transfer of the original 2. [+]
35:1 screen ratio; the Dolby 5. 1 surround sound boosts the power behind Badmorda's roar as well as spotlighting James Horner's swashbuckling score. A lively commentary is offered by Warwick Davis, although he has a tendency to dwell on his own musings rather than the film as a whole. Other features include "The Making of the Adventure", which is a standard TV behind-the-scenes documentary/advert and a wealth of TV spots, trailers and photos. By far the most interesting feature is the "Morf to Morphing: The Dawn of Digital Film" documentary including interviews with George Lucas, Ron Howard and Dennis Muren (the renowned special effects guru) on the creation of morphing and its influence on later movies. -Nikki Disney.

Review Sanctimony [2000] / Metrodome Distribution:Sanctimony is a slick thriller from German director Uwe Boll in which Seven meets American Psycho. Caspar Van Dien plays Tom Gerrick, a phenomenally successful city trader who leads a double life. By day, he buys and sells stocks; by night he indulges a passion for perverted prurience, visiting the basement of a nightclub to watch the enactment of torture snuff scenarios. Meanwhile hard-ass cop Jim Renart (Streets Of Fire's Michael Pare) and his cynical, Scully-like partner Dorothy (Jennifer Rubin) sift city filth on the trail of a serial killer dubbed the "Monkey Maker" for his predilection, mutilating the eyes, ears and mouths of his victims. Given its similarity to the aforementioned films, Sanctimony's plot twists are all too predictable but nevertheless enjoyable as Boll cranks up the audience's appetite for sick thrills. After finding out that Renart's wife (played by Catherine Oxenberg) is heavily pregnant it's evident that something exceedingly nasty is planned for her several plot points down the line. But it's Van Dien's tight-lipped yuppie psycho that steals the show, throwing the whole shebang into high camp. On the DVD: The DVD features beautifully designed animated menus but extras are limited to a theatrical trailer and cast and crew filmographies. The main feature is a crystal-clear transfer presented in letterboxed widescreen format with Dolby 5. 1 sound. [+]
