Review The Love Guru [2008] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

Mike Myers, creator of Wayne's World and Austin Powers, adds another character to his arsenal of comic personae. With his thick beard, curly mustachios, and easy-to-remember aphorisms, Guru Pitka (Myers) has built a reputation as love advisor par excellence-but he's still just America's #2 guru, after Deepak Chopra. Finally an opportunity comes his way: If he can heal the rift between a star hockey player (Romany Marco, Weeds) and his wife (Meagan Good, Stomp the Yard), he can appear on Oprah. But when he meets the hockey team's comely owner (Jessica Alba), Pitka realises he must solve his own love problems as well. Myers can't resist a good bodily functions joke-unfortunately, he can't resist a bad one either, so The Love Guru is crammed top to bottom with jokes about urine, feces, sex, genitalia-lots and lots about male genitalia-along with many, many gags about Canada, drugs, elephants, inspirational catchphrases, and little people (Vern "Mini-Me" Troyer takes the brunt of these). But the Austin Powers movies were pretty much the same sort of lowbrow comedy grab-bag; though the ratio of good to bad might be weaker here, a good handful of bits offer solid laughs, including some mock-Bollywood musical numbers. Also featuring pop star Justin Timberlake (as a preposterously well-endowed French-Canadian), Ben Kingsley (as Pitka's cross-eyed mentor), Stephen Colbert (as a drug-addled sports announcer), as well as numerous celebrity cameos. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Friends: Complete Season 4 - New Edition [1995] / Warner Home Video:

Top-class antics from the beautiful sextet of chums punctuate this excellent series, which climaxes with the wedding in London. The DVD version contains extra footage from the London locations and in-depth interviews with the makers of the series. Other core shenanigans of the series include Rachel's abortive attempts to seduce Josh, Phoebe's surrogate pregnancy, the Chandler-Joey-Kathy love triangle and Monica and Rachel's attempts to get their apartment back after they lose a bet with Joey and Chandler. Some of the not-quite-as-momentous-but-no-less-amusing events covered here include Joey trying to break his personal record for stuffing Oreo cookies in his mouth, the girls spending the afternoon in wedding dresses and Ross unveiling his indescribable "sound" on the synthesiser. -Leslie Felperin.

Review Friends: Complete Season 1 - New Edition [1995] / Warner Home Video:

This handsome box set includes all the episodes from Series One-from our favourite coffee-drinking sextet's initial meeting in the pilot right up to the series cliff-hanger "The One Where Rachel Finds Out"-that Ross is in love with her, that is. Other highlights include: "The One With the Butt", in which Joey gets a big break as Al Pacino's stunt bottom; "The One With the Monkey" in which Ross acquires Marcel, his pet monkey; and the two-parter (imaginatively called "The One with the Two Parts") in which Joey starts dating Ursula, Phoebe's twin sister and Monica and Rachel double-date cute doctors played by George Clooney and Noah Wyle from ER. -Leslie Felperin.

Review Death At A Funeral [2007] / MGM Entertainment:

The latest comedy from director Frank Oz, Death at a Funeral unusually sets a funeral at the heart of a film that's trying to generate laughs. It does prove to be quite a hurdle, but it's to the credit of those involved that the film proves to be a worthwhile and diverting way to spend an hour and a half. Starring Rupert Graves, Matthew MacFadyen and Peter Egan among a talented ensemble cast, Death at a Funeral ticks most of the boxes you'd expect of its concept, but does throw in a few twists of its own, too. There are family secrets, mix-ups, battling characters and the funeral itself to deal with, and Oz proves skilful at marrying the threads together. Death at a Funeral manages to generate a good few laughs on the way to its fine ending, but it does have its problems. There are perhaps one too many contrivances to put up with, and the script doesn't really do the director and his cast too many favours. In spite of its slight running time, it also manages to feel a little too long. But Death at a Funeral is still, despite these problems, a perfectly competent British comedy, and a useful way to fill a night in. Don't expect a masterpiece, and chances are you'll have some fun with it. -Jon Foster.

Review Young Frankenstein [1975] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

If you were to argue Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-10 funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks' previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks recreated the Frankenstein laboratory using the equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for non-stop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It. ) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. [+]
No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember-it's pronounced "Fronkensteen". -Jeff Shannon.

Review The Quiet Man (John Wayne) [1952] / Universal Pictures Video:

Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O'Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since-it's no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen-that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding, and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland, but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. -Robert Horton.
