Review That 70s Show Season 5 / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:After the somewhat dramatic conclusion of That '70s Show's fourth season, which saw Donna (Laura Prepon) and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) head to California, the fifth season (2002-2003) opens on a cheerier note, with Donna and Eric (Topher Grace) reuniting after the latter also travels West to declare his affections. Their dramatic progress of their relationship forms the crux of season 5, but if that sounds too heavy for you, don't worry-there are plenty of wacky situations on hand involving Fez (Wilmer Valderamma), Hyde (Danny Masterson), and the rest of the retro gang. Guest stars this season include Jessica Simpson in a recurring role as Kelso's California girlfriend, Annette, as well as Fred Willard, Tom Poston and Betty White as Kitty's parents, and Bobcat Goldthwait. In short, season 5 is standard issue for That '70s Show, a charming mix of broad comedy and teen-friendly drama that's well played by its very likable cast. The four-DVD set includes some surprisingly light extras: short reminiscences from Valderamma and Masterson, promos for each episode (which are not accessible via the "Play All" feature), and "Season Five in Five Minutes," which distills the 25 episodes to a five-minute capsule. What's sorely missed are the commentary tracks that appeared on previous boxed sets but it's hard to imagine these omissions deterring longtime viewers from picking up this still-groovy set. -Paul Gaita.

Review You'll Never Get Rich [1941] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:They don't make the most obvious screen couple-if you squint, you might think Stan Laurel had gotten together with Lauren Bacall-but their differences only serve to make this effervescent musical all the more entertaining. You'll Never Get Rich is the first of two that Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth made together (followed by You Were Never Lovelier). Astaire, who stars as choreographer-turned-soldier Robert Curtis, has rarely been looser, and Hayworth, as dancer Sheila Winthrop, has rarely been more graceful. As in Royal Wedding, Astaire also engages in some fancy solo footwork. Robert Benchley and Frieda Inescort provide priceless support as Robert's philandering boss and his clever wife, and Cole Porter composed the music, including "So Near and Yet So Far," "Dream Dancing," and the Oscar®-nominated "Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye. " You'll Never Get Rich is timeless, escapist fun that also serves to prove that sometimes opposites don't just attract-they can make beautiful music together. -Kathleen C. Fennessy.

Review Jack [1996] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Jack is Francis Coppola at his most pointless noodling, looking for the film he wants to make instead of just making it. Robin Williams stars as 10-year-old Jack, a boy with an inexplicable disease that ages him at four times the normal human rate. Kept at home like a contemporary Boo Radley, Jack becomes a neighbourhood legend until his parents relent and send him to school. In time, the other kids befriend him and stay loyal as his hyperdevelopment puts a strain on his body and emotions. The idea is sound, but the execution is a bore. The best the script and Coppola can come up with are painfully long scenes in which Williams's character proves himself on the playground and in gross-out contests in a tree house. Coppola fishes around for signs of life and spontaneity in these scenes, but the film is actually best when Jack has to cope with certain feelings in his mature body (such as his attraction to a character played by Fran Drescher) that he isn't prepared for emotionally. Jack would have been a lot better if Coppola had embraced a plan from beginning to end and stuck to it. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review The Nutty Professor 2 - The Klumps [2000] / Uca:Eddie Murphy's remake of The Nutty Professor used the good professor's alter ego, Buddy Love, in much the same way that Jerry Lewis did in his brilliant original: a representation of the Id out of control that plays like an admission of the actor's off-screen sins. In the sequel, Murphy expands on his Klump family from the first film and makes them major characters. Consequently, his dark side has plenty more places to express itself, particularly through the oversexed grandmother, Sherman's aggressively impotent father, and his just plain surly uncle, as well as Buddy Love (all played by Murphy). The movie opens with professor Sherman Klump barely holding onto his sanity as his internal Buddy Love makes him say inappropriate things. He decides to extract his mutant Buddy Love gene (a sort of genetic version of electroshock therapy), but afterward is unable to maintain his original personality and intelligence. Sherman is the most bland character of the bunch, and the audience gets stuck with his boring romance with fellow professor Janet Jackson, his struggle to be nice, and generic intrigue surrounding a Fountain of Youth formula he developed. When it's not trying too hard to be nice-heck, one character is anally raped by a giant hamster-the movie works. The moral of the story is that Sherman needs to reconnect with his inner Buddy Love. That goes for Murphy, too. -Andy Spletzer, Amazon. [+]

Review The Jerk / Universal Pictures Video:Carl Reiner (Where's Poppa?) brought comic Steve Martin to the screen in this mostly funny 1979 movie about a relentlessly stupid but innocent man, whom we get to know from childhood (where it never occurred to him that he was white as he was raised by a family of black sharecroppers) to romance (where he doesn't quite know what to do with Bernadette Peters). Martin is game as the moron, and this is the kind of film with funny moments people still talk about. -Tom Keogh.

Review Hidden Fortress [1958] / Bfi Video:In one of the many classic collaborations between director Akira Kurosawa and his leading man Toshirô Mifune, this 1958 film tells the story of a warrior and a princess trying against all odds to return to their homeland with their fortune. Along the way, they are simultaneously assisted and thwarted by two itinerant and not-too-bright farmers with their own designs on the treasure, giving the story a subtle comic bent. Acknowledged by George Lucas as the inspiration for Star Wars (note the similarities, especially the comic duo who are the models for R2D2 and C3PO), Hidden Fortress combines an epic tale of struggle and honour with modern comic sensibilities, creating a masterful addition to world cinema. -Robert Lane, Amazon. com.
