Review Jag - Season 2 / Jag:JAG (Judge Advocate General): The Complete Second Season finds former Navy pilot turned JAG lawyer Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) partnered with an attractive marine attorney, Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), in both the prosecution and defense of military service personnel charged with crimes. Helped by boyish, chipmunk-cheeked law student Lt. Cmdr. Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux) and guided by the tough but fair Admiral Chegwidden (John M. Jackson), Harm and Mac take on some pretty novel cases, beginning with the bizarre theft of the Declaration of Independence by Mac's own uncle, a renegade colonel trying to make a point about the fecklessness of the U. S. government. In "Secrets," a convicted spy (Victor Love) escapes from a Navy brig, taking Chegwidden-who successfully prosecuted him-hostage, and demanding that Harm and the others look into his allegation that the CIA set him up to look like a traitor. Harm often gets assignments that require more than his legal-eagle skills. In "Washington Holiday," he's ordered to escort a Romanian princess (Kiersten Warren) through Washington while her father negotiates with the U. [+]S. State Department for application to NATO. It's not an unpleasant task by any stretch, but it is perilous, considering an unidentified assassin is lurking around the nation's capital, waiting to kill the royal daughter. "Cowboys and Cossacks" is a tense drama about two Cold War-era warship captains, an American and a Russian, who turn a joint war games exercise into a personal grudge match—with Harm, Mac, and Bud trapped as official observers. "Rendezvous" is an interesting story about professional ethics that pits Mac against Harm in a case involving a wife abuser-with Mac reluctantly providing the accused man, a monstrous fellow, her best defense. Review Extras : Complete BBC Series 1 [2005] / Universal Pictures Video:Extras,Ricky Gervais' much-anticipated follow-up to The Office, is a quieter affair, and a little less accessible that its award-laden predecessor. But across the six episodes on this first season DVD set are several episodes that will richly reward repeated viewings. Gervais plays Andy Millman, an actor whose roster of jobs seems to consistently consist of extras work. Each episode follows him on a different production, and also brings in a notable guest star. Lining up throughout the series are the likes of Samuel L Jackson, Kate Winslet and Ben Stiller. And while their presence undoubtedly adds something to each carefully crafted episode, it's perhaps those with the lesser names that show the programme on top form-certainly the appearance of Les Dennis makes for an excellent half hour of comedy-drama. At the core though is Gervais' Millman-a far easier character to warm to than David Brent-and Ashley Jensen's marvellous Maggie Jacobs. It's these two who consistently provide the show's highlights, and while the headlines have been generated by the all-star roster of names attracted to appear in Extras, it's the two less showy characters who work the best. Extras isn't a show full of belly laughs, and its fanbase is likely to be smaller than that of The Office. But it's still a quality creation, properly crafted, with an awful lot to it to enjoy and appreciated. [+]-Simon Brew.

Review Law and Order: Series 1 [1991] / Universal Pictures UK:From its gritty documentary look to its signature note-knocking "tching-tching" that signals scene changes, Law & Order was a groundbreaking cop show when it debuted in 1990. It is television's most resilient series, surviving huge changes to its ensemble. One of the secrets of the show's durability is its compelling structure. The first half of each hour-long episode is a classic police procedural in which "Law", personified in the first season by partners Greevey (George Dzundza) and Mike Logan (Christopher Noth) investigate a crime and make an arrest. The second half chronicles the ensuing trial, as prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty) and Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) under the supervision of Steven Hill's Adam Schiff (more feisty and animated here than in later seasons). Law & Order is also distinguished by its superb writing. Several episodes take their inspiration from the headlines, including "By Hooker, By Crook" (about a socialite-run call-girl ring) and "Indifference", which recalls the tragic Lisa Steinberg child abuse case. Others deal with such hot-button issues as abortion ("Life Choice") and AIDS ("The Reaper's Helper"). Another plus is the talent pool of character actors who lend their verisimilitude. Guest stars include Samuel L Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Violence of Summer"), The West Wing's John Spencer ("Prescription for Death"), Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon ("Subterranean Homeboy Blues") and The Sopranos' Dominic Chianese ("Sonata for Stolen Organ"). Review Secret Diary Of A Call Girl - Series 2 / Warner Home Video:With Billie Piper returning to step into the stilettos of Belle, Secret Diary Of A Call Girl’s second series continues to take inspiration from the book of the same name by Belle de Jour. As such, Belle continues to jump between her two lives, on one hand a legal secretary, and on the other, a high-class prostitute with some very varied clients. Things get a bit trickier and a lot more heated though for Belle this time around. For series two of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl finds her struggling to keep her two lives entirely apart, her attempts to be a proper girlfriend, and ultimately her plan to get out of the business altogether. Naturally, all of these come with twists and turns along the way, and by the end of the series, her career has taken a quite different turn. Continually graphic in its portrayal of what Belle does for a living, Secret Diary Of A Call Girl relies heavily on its leading lady to get it through its slower moments. But it continues to be an entertaining enough drama, with the episodes never outstaying their welcome. And a third series is on the way, too⦠-Jon Foster.
