Review Invaders / Paramount Home Entertainment (UK):

"If they're really after you, you're not paranoid" is a lesson The Invaders' David Vincent has learned all too well. Vincent (portrayed by Roy Thinnes) knows that aliens from a dying planet have come to Earth and are planning to take over; having lost his way and fallen asleep in his car in the remote woods one night, he saw their flying saucer land. What's worse, the invaders know he knows. And worst of all, the rest of the world is willfully oblivious, and little interested in the rantings of this madman. That's the premise of this series from producer Quinn (The Fugitive) Martin, and even if the 16 episodes from the show's first season (1967) don't always match the promise of the concept, this is still an intriguing, entertaining ride. The aliens, crafty critters that they are, look exactly like us, save for a slight disfigurement of one finger; they also completely disintegrate when killed, a convenient little conceit that prevents anyone from figuring out who or what they really are. Their dastardly schemes for eliminating the Earthlings are many and varied, ranging from nuclear bombs, plagues of locusts (and carnivorous butterflies!), and manufactured hurricanes to brainwashing and mind control experiments. Standing against this implacable foe is just one man-an amateur (Vincent was an architect before all the craziness began) who works alone (the other true believers he encounters almost invariably end up dead) and is often stymied by his own impetuousness and lack of preparation. Admittedly, the concept doesn't hold up under close scrutiny; even if the aliens are trying to take over by stealth instead of one massive invasion, it doesn't make a lot of sense that they can't eliminate a guy who doesn't even own a gun. There is no series arc; each episode is stand-alone, so by the end of the season the invaders still have barely established a foothold. [+]
Moreover, while there are plenty of fistfights and chase sequences, the special effects are ludicrous, the alien technology looks like something out of a high school play, the stories are obvious, and the acting is melodramatic (notwithstanding guest appearances by the Jack Warden and familiar TV faces like Suzanne Pleshette, Arthur Hill, Joseph Campanella, Jack Lord, Ed Asner, and many others). Nevertheless, with the help of Dominic Frontiere's music and the portentous narration that begins and ends each episode, The Invaders manages to consistently maintain its paranoid, Kafka-esque vibe, and that alone makes it compellingly watchable. -Sam Graham.

Review Mork & Mindy - The Third Season [1980] [1979] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

Mork & Mindy: The Third Season finds the titular pair still working on their offbeat relationship but growing closer all the time in love and regard for one another. The season begins with the threat of Mork (Robin Williams) being recalled to his home planet Ork after he undergoes a personality change from too much Earth exposure. The wildman from another planet is suddenly acting like a bland suburbanite, upsetting Mindy (Pam Dawber) and requiring a visit from a revered Orkan elder (actually a boy, played by Vidal Peterson) who will either restore the real Mork's character or take him back. "Mork the Prankster" finds the ever-curious extraterrestrial learning about the concept of practical jokes, then so offending Mindy with a prank gone bad that she moves out and must be convinced to take him back again. In "Mindy Gets a Job," Mindy applies for and receives an entry-level job at a Boulder television station, then finds herself having to go on-camera to do the news broadcast alone during a blizzard. When she runs out of steam during her report, Mork leaps to the rescue, giving Williams a prime opportunity to improvise his way through a stream of feverish free-association. In the season finale, "Reflections and Regrets," Mindy tells Mork about her greatest sorrow, and he sets about trying to ease her pain while also letting her know how he truly feels. Of course, there are a number of episodes that concern Mork's heightened sense of justice and fairness, including "Dueling Skates," in which Mork challenges a champion skater to a race in order to save the day care center where he works. "Mork, the Monkey's Uncle" begins with Mork kidnapping a chimp from a zoo after concluding the primate was being mistreated. "Gunfight at the Mork-ay Corral" focuses on Mork's effort to teach a young boy (Corey Feldman) about the virtue of non-violence. [+]
Finally, there are plenty of comic storylines that simply encourage Williams to display his genius, such as "Mork Meets Robin Williams," in which character and actor have a hilarious, face-to-face interview encounter. "Alas, Poor Mork, We Knew Him Well," is a very fun show about Mork's neurotic reaction to an insurance salesman's pitch about death from natural disasters. Mork & Mindy: The Third Season has a number of episodes from among the best of the old Garry Marshall-created sitcom. -Tom Keogh.

Review Men Behaving Badly - Series 2 [1992] / Fremantle Home Entertainment:

The ultimate small-screen representation of Loaded-era lad culture-albeit a culture constantly being undermined by its usually sharper female counterpart-there seems little argument that Men Behaving Badly was one of 1990s' definitive sitcoms. Certainly the booze-oriented, birds-obsessed antics of Martin Clunes' Gary and Neil Morrissey' Tony have become every bit as connected to Britain's collective funny bone as Basil Fawlty's inept hostelry or Ernie Wise's short, hairy legs. Yet, the series could easily have been cancelled when ITV viewers failed to respond to the original version, which featured Clunes sharing his flat with someone named Dermot, played by Harry Enfield. Indeed, it was only when the third series moved to the BBC and was then broadcast in a post-watershed slot-allowing writer Simon Nye greater freedom to explore his characters' saucier ruminations-that the show began to gain a significant audience. By then, of course, Morrissey had become firmly ensconced on the collective pizza-stained sofa, while more screen time was allocated to the boys' respective foils, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash. Often glibly dismissed as a lame-brained succession of gags about sex and flatulence, the later series not only featured great performances and sharp-as-nails writing but also sported a contemporary attitude that dared to go where angels, and certainly most other sitcoms, feared to tread. Or, as Gary was once moved to comment about soft-porn lesbian epic Love in a Women's Prison: "It's a serious study of repressed sexuality in a pressure-cooker environment. " Series 2 includes: "Gary and Tony", in which Tony moves into the Gary's flat and makes his first disastrous attempt to woo upstairs-neighbour Deborah; "Rent Boy" in which Gary thinks Tony is gay; "How to Bump Your Girlfriend" in which no sooner has Tony got back together with his old girlfriend and filled her in about Gary ("nice bloke, ears like the FA Cup") than he decides to give her the shove; "Troublesome Twelve Inch" in which Gary tries to sell a rare record belonging to Dorothy without her knowing; "Going Nowhere" in which Tony buys a van to impress Deborah who in turn gets stuck in a lift with Gary; and "People Behaving Irritatingly" in which Tony's brother and missus visit the flat much to Gary's annoyance ("It's not enough that they were at it all last night, now they're trying to set up a national sperm bank in my bath. ) -Clark Collis.
