Review Chuck & Buck [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Live/Artisan:

Once upon a time, in a childhood land of lollipops and sleepovers, Chuck and Buck were the best of friends; their days marked out with "fun, fun, fun". The trouble is that Chuck grew up and Buck did not. When the pair are reunited at a family funeral, Chuck (now a thrusting music exec with a pert girlfriend and an apartment in the Hollywood hills) finds himself bothered and bewildered by the creepy lost boy he thought he'd left behind. "I like your house," mumbles Buck, sticking out like a sore thumb at an uptight yuppie party. "It's very old person-y. " Shot on a shoestring budget by Miguel Arteta, Chuck and Buck offers a uniquely rich and strange comedy of retarded childhood. Think of this as a Peter Pan for modern-day America, or the Tom Hanks film Big viewed through a glass darkly. The slender premise contains deep pockets of ambiguity. After all, who's the real victim here? The harassed Chuck (played by American Pie co-creator Chris Weitz) or the spurned, saucer-eyed Buck (Mike White, who also wrote the script)? And who is the hero: the successful, status-conscious professional or the dopey, tearful wild card? Throughout the tale, you find your sympathies swinging back and forth between them. Make no mistake, Chuck and Buck is alive with hilarious, often horrific set-pieces. [+]
Yet Arteta's direction keeps it on a tight leash, prevents it from descending to the level of a simple freak-show. Instead his film blossoms from an odd-couple farce into a drolly provocative (and oddly humane) portrait of that shadow period between infancy and adolescence. White's character comes across as a very human kind of movie monster. Resplendent in stripy T-shirt, Buck is Chuck's conscience, his id, the ghost of childhood come back to haunt him. -Xan Brooks.

Review Chutney Popcorn [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Wolfe Video:

Chutney Popcorn is an amusing exploration of surrogate motherhood that never lets cross-cultural or lesbian issues overrun what is essentially a family drama. Nisha Ganatra directs, writes and takes the lead role as Reena, a New York artist and lesbian with Indian roots that include an over-indulgent mother and newlywed perfect sister, Sarita. On finding that Sarita is infertile, Reena proposes becoming a surrogate mother, not just to help out her sister but to prove to her mother that she is capable of living up to the traditional values of womanhood. The pregnancy puts obvious strain on Sarita's marriage and she begins to distance herself from Reena and the unborn baby. At the same time, Reena's live-in girlfriend Lisa (Jill Hennessy) has commitment issues; babies never being part of her life equation. For her first feature film, Ganatra shows much promise with her ability to blend the various issues at the film's heart without becoming over-sentimental about them. Madhur Jaffrey offers a surprisingly sparky comic turn as the doting mother trying to hold on to the values of her homeland. The script is loaded towards the inevitable happy ending, which feels far too easy and upbeat, leaving the audience with unanswered questions about the future of the child. Despite such reservations, Chutney Popcorn is a spicy look into the alternative family that's more substantial than just a simple side dish. -Nikki Disney.

Review La Cage Aux Folles [1980] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:

A likeable 1977 French farce (and the basis for the 1996 American remake, The Birdcage), this popular comedy was one of the most successful international films of all time, and even spawned a Broadway musical and two sequels. It tells the story of a gay couple who-when one man's son from a previous liaison brings home his fiancée-masquerade as husband and wife for their prospective in-laws. Le Cage Aux Folles is saved from becoming an exercise in silliness by the heartfelt characterisations of the gay nightclub owners. La Cage aux Folles is one of the funniest imports from Europe and a great comedy in any venue. -Robert Lane In the French farce La Cage aux Folles, Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault star as Renato and Albin, a middle-aged gay couple and co-owners of a nightclub, the titular Cage aux Folles, where hysterically effeminate Albin stars as drag act Zaza. The long-suffering Renato once briefly enjoyed a heterosexual relationship and has a 20-year-old son, Laurent. When the latter turns up one day and announces he is to marry the daughter of one M Charrier, deputy leader of the Moral Order party, Renato is initially appalled. However, he comes round and reluctantly agrees to a meeting with the girl's parents, in which he will pose as a high-ranking diplomat, rid the apartment of all its queenly trappings and try to persuade Albin to lie low. The final 20 minutes of the movie, in which this charade of austerity and propriety falls entirely to pieces are among the most aisle-rollingly uproarious ever committed to celluloid. It was remade by Hollywood as The Birdcage, but this original is far funnier. [+]
Although perhaps a little dated and stereotypical in its depiction of gay life there is real sympathy for, and affection conveyed between, Renato and Albin. The scenes with the Charrier family, who, it turns out, have problems of their own, cut an utterly gloomy bourgeois contrast with the screaming flamboyance of the nightclub scenes. The Charrier's unscrupulous chauffeur is one of the film's many treasures, his final "Combien?" provoking the film's crowning guffaw. All this iced with a delicious soundtrack from Ennio Morricone which wafts with the nostalgic scent of late-1970s South of France. On the DVD: La Cage aux Folles is unfortunately presented in a not terribly good 1:66:1 transfer: much of the crackle and faded colours of the original remain, while the soundtrack is fuzzy in places. The only extra is the original trailer. -David Stubbs.

Review The Fluffer [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / First Run Features:

Wash Westmoreland's intelligent social comedy The Fluffer explores the pornography industry and makes some interesting points about the way it serves dreams and hardens hearts. But it also has a streak of sentimentality which stops the various elements quite coming together. Aspiring cinematographer Sean (Michael Cunio) becomes obsessed with male porn star Johnny Rebel/Mickey, and takes a job with Janus Films partly to get to know him. In the event, his duties include more than camera work, such as preparing Mickey's occasionally flaccid member for its big moments. The confused and exploitative Mickey identifies as heterosexual-yet he likes Sean a lot, and Sean's feelings for him are more or less obvious. In one of the film's most disturbing sequences, Sean goes to the club where Mickey's pregnant lover Babylon works and hires her for a lap dance; it is never entirely clear to what extent Babylon understands the situation. The film ends up avoiding psychological complexity for a sudden burst of crass noir gestures as Mickey kills a producer and gets Sean to drive him to Mexico; up to this last reel or so, however, it is intelligent and often perceptive, though never remarkably so. Debbie Harry has an impressive cameo as Babylon's world-weary boss and mentor; Adina Porter is good as Sean's lesbian confidante. On the DVD: The Fluffer on disc has a slightly flat Dolby 5. 1 soundtrack which suddenly becomes blaring in a couple of party and nightclub sequences; it is presented in 1. [+]
