Review Vampyros Lesbos / UMBRELLA:

Beyond being Jess Franco's masterpiece, Vampyros Lesbos is a highpoint of the lesbian vampire film genre. Like Daughters of Darkness, The Vampire Lovers, and the New Wave vampire film, The Hunger, Vampyros features an extremely hot vampire, Countess Nadina Carody (Soledad Miranda), who dances at strip clubs in her spare time. In a brutally sexy opening scene, Miranda hypnotically seduces audience member Linda Westinghouse (Ewa Strömberg), calling her to her castle in Anatolia, on business from which Westinghouse never returns. Linda's boyfriend, Omar (Andrés Monales), eventually finds Linda institutionalized, cared for by one Dr. Seward. The characters in Vampyros Lesbos are foils for the cast of Bram Stoker's Dracula, in radical opposition to the traditional, clichéd horror film stereotypes. Psychedelic moments, like when Linda is seduced by the Queen of the Night, recall the grainy, erotic scenes of Jean Rollin's Requiem Pour Un Vampire, and Le Frisson Des Vampires. To dwell on the convoluted plot is clearly missing the point. With arguably the best horror movie soundtrack every released, Vampyros Lesbos revels in the sultry aspects of vampirism, resulting in long, romantic sequences of nude women playing in ocean waves, lying on chaise lounges, and making out in bed. Franco's other films, like She Killed in Ecstasy and Venus in Furs, serve as sequels, so see this first. [+]

Review Gendernauts [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / First Run Features:

Opening with nature documentary footage of the female hyena, which physically and socially seems more like the male, Gendernauts, a scattershot documentary about the fringes of gender identity, looks a lot like any low-budget TV documentary. We are shown interviews with a clutch of "gendernauts"-transsexuals, hermaphrodites, sex artists and transvestites-who chat about their personal journeys, lifestyles and preferences. These people work mostly in a nebulous area somewhere between the sex industry and avant-garde art but director Monika Treut keeps coming back to the people themselves, who perhaps take themselves rather too seriously even for Americans but all have challenging, odd, interesting things to say. Among the cast of characters, mostly found in San Francisco or New York, with shuddered memories of early lives in small towns somewhere in between: female-to-male transsexual Max Valerio, women-who-choose-to-live-as-men Jordy Jones, Texas Tomboy and Stafford, pornographer/artist Annie Sprinkle, intersex person Hida Vilario (perhaps the wryest and most engaging of the lot), "goddess of cyberspace" Sandy Stone, Penthouse pin-up/transgender den-mother Tornado, cabaret performer Elvis Herselvis. Treut, whose earlier films (Seduction: The Cruel Woman, The Virgin Machine) have been more striking as cinema, damps down her own pictorial instincts to keep her subjects centre-screen. Even at 82 minutes, it gets repetitive and there's a sense that the film might have been stronger if it honed in on fewer people and got a little deeper-it's effectively a cheerleading film for the gendernauts, which means glossing over some of the hard times these people must have had living in a country a lot more prejudiced than this film is. -Rainbow Christen.

Review The Killing of Sister George [1968] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:

"Sister George" within The Killing of Sister George is Britain's best-loved soap opera character, played by actress June Buckeridge (Beryl Reid). Buckeridge has become so identified with her character-a sweet old Miss Marple-ish nurse who putters around her quaint little village on a motor scooter-even her friends call her George. But outside the studio she's a hard-drinking, hot-tempered, foul-mouthed lesbian living with an immature young thing she's nicknamed "Childie" (Susannah York, who makes her memorable entrance in a sheer baby-doll nightie). At her worst Sister George is an abusive monster (in a moment of rage she forces Childie to eat the butt of her cigar) but beneath the bluster is an insecure television actress. When the studio decides to kill her character off and an executive makes a play for Childie, the soap star desperately clings to her young lover. Director Robert Aldrich, best known for his tough action films and gothic thrillers, brings his fierce vision of human nature to Frank Marcus's play. In its best moments the film simmers in angry suspicion and helpless frustration, brought to life by Reid's vivacious performance but other scenes are overlong and stage-bound and would have benefited greatly from judicious trimming and tightening. The caricatured portrayals of lesbian life have aged rather poorly-an inevitable sign of the times-but this acidic show-biz drama still carries a hefty emotional punch. -Sean Axmaker, Amazon. com.
