Review Go Fish [1994] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:Rose Troche's first film is a breezy, unrelentingly charming if flyweight study of female friendship and the usual relationship traumas. Guinevere Turner plays Max, an aspiring writer, (she's also the film's co-writer, and co-scripted the screenplay of the recent film American Psycho, in which she came under Christian Bale's knife). Max and her friends Ely, Kia and Daria spend a lot of time talking, cooking, and generally hanging out with that studied coolness that only people in independent movies can perfect. A tentative romance develops, and if not much else happens, at least it doesn't happen stylishly, in trendy black-and-white with snazzy dialogue. Most of all Go Fish deserves credit for barely deigning to engage with the fact that all its protagonists are gay, as if this were just another natural, everyday thing, like being left-handed or tall. Review High Art [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Universal Studios:Syd (Radha Mitchell) is an editor at a painfully pretentious art magazine; by chance, she becomes acquainted with lesbian photographer Lucy (Ally Sheedy) and her weirdo German girlfriend (Patricia Clarkson, in a strange Dietrich-like role). Syd becomes captivated with Lucy and her work and, smelling a career move, offers to feature her in the next issue of the magazine. The two become attracted, but their relationship is fraught with perils-Syd ditches her rather square boyfriend, Lucy has to deal with her possessive girlfriend, the avaricious management at the magazine pressures Syd and, most importantly, the pair begins to travel down the road of heroin addiction. Besides the lesbian theme, High Art addresses such themes as what an artist is or isn't willing to do for recognition, and what price that recognition carries. High Art is a remarkably honest work, painful at times but understated and thoughtful. It does an excellent job of portraying the heroin-induced torpor of Lucy and her bohemian friends as they lie around and become consumed with the stuff. It's a cautionary tale, a sincere love story, a reflection on the nature of art and a "lesbian film" for which the lesbianism is integral but not part of an overriding agenda. Sheedy is excellent, as is Mitchell in a very expressive role. It's far from being a feel-good movie, but High Art undeniably has some power behind it that will stick with you past the closing credits. -Jerry Renshaw, Amazon. [+]

Review Like It Is [1998] / Peccadillo Pictures:Like It Is is much like watching a train wreck-the very idea of it is repellent and yet you perversely can't avert your eyes. While its urban grittiness and sooty veneer entranced some critics who mistook its violent, netherworld neorealism for art, Like It Is offers little in the way of redemption, positive gay imaging or even particularly good narrative. Paul Oremland directed this venture about a young, gay Blackpool tough named Craig (Steve Bell) who bare-knuckle boxes for money. He ultimately moves to London in search of a better life and falls in with the trendy London gay-club scene, meeting and falling for a handsome record producer named Matt (Ian Rose) and his wealthy boss (played by the Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey). The better life is quickly tainted by disillusion and misery, much as is the viewing experience. Steve Bell is, in real life, a featherweight boxing champion in Britain and therefore brings an urgent and raw vitality to the lead, but the characters as a whole are either irritating or unsympathetic, and it's ultimately difficult to find anyone to care for, or a story worth empathising with. -Paula Nechak, Amazon. com.

Review Chutney Popcorn [1999] / Millivres Multimedia:Chutney Popcorn is an amusing exploration of surrogate motherhood that never lets cross-cultural or lesbian issues overrun what is essentially a family drama. Nisha Ganatra directs, writes and takes the lead role as Reena, a New York artist and lesbian with Indian roots that include an over-indulgent mother and newlywed perfect sister, Sarita. On finding that Sarita is infertile, Reena proposes becoming a surrogate mother, not just to help out her sister but to prove to her mother that she is capable of living up to the traditional values of womanhood. The pregnancy puts obvious strain on Sarita's marriage and she begins to distance herself from Reena and the unborn baby. At the same time, Reena's live-in girlfriend Lisa (Jill Hennessy) has commitment issues; babies never being part of her life equation. For her first feature film, Ganatra shows much promise with her ability to blend the various issues at the film's heart without becoming over-sentimental about them. Madhur Jaffrey offers a surprisingly sparky comic turn as the doting mother trying to hold on to the values of her homeland. The script is loaded towards the inevitable happy ending, which feels far too easy and upbeat, leaving the audience with unanswered questions about the future of the child. Despite such reservations, Chutney Popcorn is a spicy look into the alternative family that's more substantial than just a simple side dish. -Nikki Disney.
