Review Merlin [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Live/Artisan:What kind of guy was the wizard Merlin, anyway? He lives a long time, raises a boy to be a king, props up a Utopian empire with his magic and wisdom, and then watches as it all crumbles under such banal forces as vengeance and betrayal. This four-hour mini-series re-tells the story of Camelot and King Arthur from the perspective of the magic man who sacrifices a great deal to guide mortals toward a better destiny. Sam Neill plays Merlin as an accessible, flesh-and-blood fellow of real passion, powerless to undo the spell of a rival (Rutger Hauer) who has virtually imprisoned Merlin's great love, Nimue (Isabella Rossellini), but gifted enough to counter the treachery of Morgan Le Fey (Helena Bonham Carter) and the wicked Queen Mab (Miranda Richardson). The battle sequences and special effects are striking and original, and it is great fun to see such art-house movie actors as Richardson, Carter, Neill, etc. , in fantasy entertainment the whole family can enjoy. (An unrecognizable Martin Short must be singled out, however, for a wonderful, largely dramatic performance as Mab's sidekick, Frik. ) Directed by Steve Barron (The Adventures of Pinocchio), Merlin is a nice bit of glossy revisionism of a beloved legend. -Tom Keogh.

Review Grizzly Falls [1999] / Prism Leisure:Grizzly Falls is a gorgeous, hopelessly old-fashioned film that's unlikely to attract the viewership it ought to-none of the characters is particularly witty or clever; special effects, save a few stunts with a bear, are nil; and the irony level is at an all-time low. In other words, prying the kids away from Pokémon to watch this film may be a challenge, but it's worth the effort. Daniel Clark plays Harry, a lad of around eight who accompanies Tyrone (Bryan Brown), his thrill-seeking dad, on a mission to the Colorado Rockies, where he intends to be the first to capture a live grizzly. It's the early 1900s, so the means by which Tyrone plans to snare the beast aren't especially humane-at a saloon stop, he hires five tough guys, one with a team of hounds. Then the hunt begins. The hounds' punishing master quickly emerges as a villain; when he and two dogs are mauled by the grizzly, he exacts revenge by caging the bear's cubs. She, in classic righteous-mother mode, retaliates by dragging Harry into the woods. What follows is a desperate chase through beautiful countryside by tireless Tyrone and the blossoming of an impossible boy-bear friendship. Mizzy, as Harry comes to call the bear, protects him from dangers of the wild while leading the boy to her caged cubs, who are travelling east with the ornery houndskeeper. There's a showdown when the animal family is reunited, but Harry and Tyrone extinguish a series of confrontations handily, then move on to cement their own iffy relationship. [+]
The surplus of action scenes in this PG-rated film will wow kids eight and up, and only jaded viewers will summon the callousness to criticise its unapologetic portrayal of blind loyalty and courage at all costs. -Tammy La Gorce, Amazon. com.

Review Teletubbies - Hide And Seek Video [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:Join Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po as they provide 59 minutes of educational fun for one to three year olds in Teletubbies: Hide and Seek. Set against the unique, now-familiar backdrop of Teletubbyland with its futuristic dome-home, rolling hills, pretend flowers, real rabbits and giggling baby-faced sun, the loveable Teletubbies have much to discover: the joys of hiding and looking for each other; laughter when some tubby toast goes missing; and the magic of the wall that appears and disappears. Three video clips (transmitted, of course, on tubby tummies) include real children playing hide-and-seek outside, hunting for eggs on a farm and discovering a chameleon under a leaf. The BBC Teletubby episodes have had phenomenal success since 1997 and one of the reasons for this is that through repetition the Teletubbies give babies and toddlers the power to anticipate what happens next. By gaining confidence in their predictions, youngsters actively participate and this was demonstrated by a normally quiet two-year-old reviewer who was soon laughing, clapping and even running up to the television and shouting "there, there" to Dipsy as he searched for Po. Repetition also helps the very young to learn, and the wall sketch effectively teaches the difference between the words "behind", "in front" and "around". In contrast, surprise actions create humour and the toast incident leads to several minutes of infectious giggling. Children as young as three months love to play "peek-a-boo"-the universal appeal of "hide-and-seek" combined with the much-loved Teletubbies will guarantee frequent and happy viewing among the under-threes. -Tracey Hogan.

Review Brother Bear [2003] / Walt Disney Home Video:Disney's Brother Bear boasts a dramatic story-after he kills a bear, a young hunter named Kenai (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix) in prehistoric North America is turned into a bear himself and hunted by his own brother-but the animated movie's tone is more earnest and warm than tragic, focusing on the unfolding relationship between Kenai and an orphaned bear cub named Koda (voiced by Jeremy Suarez). However, it's often the comic supporting characters that prove the most popular, and a pair of moose voiced by Rick Moranis and Doug Thomas will win many fans. The songs by Phil Collins are typically negligible, but the hand-drawn animation is lush (occasional flashes of computer-generated animation clash with the movie's overall look). Kids will also enjoy the mammoths; but no sabre-toothed tigers, unfortunately. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Dragonheart [1996] / Universal Pictures Video:In the closing paragraph of his 1996 review of Dragonheart, noted critic Roger Ebert summed up this adventurous fantasy quite nicely: "While no reasonable person over the age of 12 would presumably be able to take it seriously, there is nevertheless a light-hearted joy to it, a cheerfulness, an insouciance, that recalls the days when movies were content to be fun. " That's precisely the quality that makes Dragonheart so appealing, despite the fact that it didn't exactly take flight and breathe fire at the box office. The movie takes itself seriously without sacrificing the wit and cleverness that make it so entertaining. It's about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (voiced by Sean Connery), after they realise that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that's a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the "Old Code" of honour with a ruthless reign of terror. As Ebert rightly noted, Dragonheart is no masterpiece, and its story (which was originally conceived as a darker, more serious drama) isn't likely to capture everyone's heart (dragon or otherwise). But it's full of exciting action, witty dialogue and gallant heroism, and in the presentation of a realistic talking dragon it's a milestone in computer-generated special effects, far surpassing the breakthroughs of Jurassic Park three years earlier. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.
