Review Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius Dvd [2002] / Paramount Home Entertainment:A venture into franchise-building from the children's cable channel Nickelodeon, Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius arrives in concert with a TV series and a great deal of merchandising muscle. Set in the charmingly designed town of Retroville, which boasts sleek 1950s lines, the film introduces Jimmy (voiced by Debi Derryberry), a pint-sized kid with a penchant for elaborate and almost-successful inventions (a time-speeding microwave for cultivating pearls, a shrinking ray which confusingly looks too much like a TV remote, a girl-eating plant) and the usual array of sidekicks (asthmatic Carl Wheezer, robot dog Goddard) and nemeses (smart girl Cindy Vortex, supposed tough kid Nick). Thanks to Jimmy's attempts to contact alien civilisations, the Earth is noticed by a race of formless green slime creatures who live in egg-shaped glass housings. Just as Jimmy, frustrated by parental disapproval of his often-malfunctioning gadgets ("no rockets in the house"), wishes all parents would disappear, the alien king (Patrick Stewart) stages a mass abduction of the town's adults so they can be sacrificed to his race's giant chicken god. After a riotous discipline-free day, the kids decide they miss their mummies and daddies. Jimmy converts some carnival rides into a space fleet so the kids can rescue the grown-ups. Less inflated and elaborate than Pixar CGI efforts like the Toy Story films or Monsters, Inc. , Jimmy Neutron is lightly likeable rather than overwhelmingly wonderful. The music choices (with the exception of an eerily apt use of "The Birdy Song" as an instrument of torture) are lazily standardised (mostly kiddie rap) and the outsider-saves-the-day fairy tale plot is formulaic. But there's a great deal of invention around the margins (dozens of gags designed to become apparent only after repeated viewings), the villains are wonderful creations (when their shells break, they become green puddles with eyes) and it manages both smarts and sweets (Carl's "I Touched a Llama" badge). Review The 10th Kingdom [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Hallmark:The Tenth Kingdom, an epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning screenwriter of Gulliver 's Travels, was a ratings failure when broadcast on US television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the "Fairy Tale Zone"; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince-Wendell, grandson of Snow White-changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The Tenth Kingdom is also a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, "magic to behold". But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. Review The Wizard Of Oz (1939) / Warner Home Video:Like the Tin Man's heart, the true test of a real classic is how much it is loved by others. The enduring charms of The Wizard of Oz have easily weathered the vicissitudes of changing fashions making the film one of the world's best-loved, most-quoted and frequently imitated movies. It's now as ubiquitous an American pop-cultural icon as McDonald's, making judging the movie purely on its own merits an almost impossible task. Judy Garland's tragic later life, for example, makes her naïve and utterly beguiling Dorothy seem all the more poignant in retrospect. But this at least is clear: much of this movie's success depends on the winning appeal of Garland's "Everygirl" figure, who creates the vital identification and empathy necessary to carry the audience with her into the land of Oz. We always care deeply about Dorothy, her quest for home and the strength of her friendship with her companions. Garland's assured dancing and singing routines with her ideally cast Broadway comedy co-stars Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley are still endlessly delightful, of course, and the songs and score (by Arlen, Harburg and Stothart) are as good as anything in the Hollywood musical canon. It is Garland's deeply felt rendition of "Over the Rainbow" that is both the film's emotional core and the reason why adults as much as children the world over still respond so strongly to this movie. So long as people long for home and the love of their friends and family, the nostalgic appeal of Oz will never fade. On the DVD: another splendid digital restoration from the MGM vaults keeps this wonderful classic as vivid and alive as it was back in 1939, if not more so. [+]The 1. 33:1 picture is clear and defined, bursting with the vibrant colours of Oz (you can even see the wires holding up the Lion's tail). Even more remarkably, because the original microphone tapes have been preserved the soundtrack has been remastered in 5. 1 stereo, thereby accentuating the lush tones of the MGM orchestra and Garland's famous singing. The disc is also chock full of extras, including outtakes, audio sequences, composer Harold Arlen's backstage movies, extracts from earlier silent Oz films, clips from the Academy Awards and interviews with the stars among many other fascinating nuggets. The new 50-minute documentary hosted by Angela Lansbury, and irritatingly narrated in the present tense, is oddly the weakest part, with too little hard information and too much padding about how everyone loves the movie. The only gripe is Warners' trademark cardboard slipcase, which is awkward and easily damaged. But this is still an essential disc for the young at heart everywhere. -Mark Walker.

Review Lady And The Tramp [1955] / Walt Disney Home Video:Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee co-wrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. Review Teletubbies - Here Come The Teletubbies / 2 Entertain Video:Here comes Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po! The colourful, chubby, futuristic foursome get up to lots of adventures in this early collection of Teletubbies stories, with plenty of the wonderfully intriguing sounds-from the giggles of the Sun Baby, to the slurping sounds of Noo-Noo, to the "tuning" noise of the loudspeakers-that are the trademark of this BBC show, expertly created to capture the attention of babies and pre-school toddlers. Here Come the Teletubbies is the perfect first video to introduce youngsters to the show, with lots of short stories containing some Teletubby favourites-the tubby toast machine goes berserk and throws toast everywhere, the magic rain cloud appears and makes puddles to splash in, a surreal, computer-generated animal parade marches across the valley, Po makes a trail of tubby custard all over Tubby land and then falls over all the time. There are, of course, two short films of real-life children, from the TV-tummy of the Tubbies, that make this such fun for older toddlers too. -Alison Jardine.
