Review Emmanuelle 2 [1976] / Momentum Pictures:In 1977, Emmanuelle 2 was unleashed on a world hungry for more soft-core adventures in the life of the insatiable eponymous heroine. The action has shifted to Hong Kong under a new director (Francis Giacobetti) with a new supporting cast, but Sylvia Kristel is on hand to reprise her performance as the limpid but voracious architect's wife. Emmanuelle herself is now a more assertive character having taken on board the lessons learned in her first outing. "Chastity is a lack of generosity", she was told. Now she is generous to a fault, sharing herself with a range of nubile acquaintances and a dashing smuggler under the approving gaze of her husband. She has some perky fun in steerage en route to Hong Kong, enjoys fantastic orgasms as a result of extraordinarily painful-looking acupuncture and gets turned on by a wittily fetishistic version of a What the Butler Saw machine. Of all the Emmanuelle films, this one best demonstrates why they have attracted a cult lesbian following over the years. Although the producers were obviously appealing to the male fantasy market on one level, the lesbian scenes are filmed with an honesty and frankness-the soft focus of the first film is more or less abandoned-which had never been seen in anything approaching mainstream cinema before. On the DVD: Presented in widescreen 16:9 format, the picture quality of this film is sharper than its predecessor. Although the dubbing remains laughable, the dialogue is probably not the main reason for watching. [+]
At least the Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack gives full reign to Francis Lai's (a former composer for Edith Piaf) overripe music. The theme song is sung by Sylvia Kristel herself. The only extra is the original theatrical trailer. -Piers Ford.

Review Emmanuelle 3 [1994] [1977]:Following hot on the heels of the first sequel, Emmanuelle 3 (originally released as Goodbye Emmanuelle) finds our heroine with the hearty sexual appetite tiring of the amoral lifestyle she leads with her husband. This time, the action shifts to the Seychelles and Emmanuelle's husband turns out to be a nasty piece of work, as at the mercy of the green-eyed monster as everybody else. Ironically, the erotic sequences which gave the first two films their notoriety are in much shorter supply here; after an early threesome, the most memorable is a beach scene stolen straight from From Here to Eternity, although it's a damn sight less erotic than the Burt Lancaster/Deborah Kerr original. But the underlying story of a dying marriage gives the picture a stronger narrative structure than either of its predecessors. Sylvia Kristel now looks a touch bored by a role which has capitalised on her ability to convey wide-eyed wonder at the constant discovery of new sexual experiences. With no continuity of directors between the films it was left to Kristel herself to try and develop the character through a series of increasingly repetitive scenarios. When Emmanuelle falls in love with a film director she discovers an emotional emptiness at the heart of her current lifestyle. With her eyes newly opened, she rounds on the fickle, bitchy jet set brigade: "They are ludicrous with their talk of eroticism. " The spell is well and truly broken. On the DVD: Presented in widescreen 16:9 format with sharp picture quality, this release reproduces the original theatrical viewing experience down to the occasionally comical lack of synchronicity between the dubbed dialogue and the actors' lips. [+]
Serge Gainsbourg, the enfant terrible of French chanson, was never too fussy about his art and contributes a score of surprising banality which we can thoroughly appreciate thanks to the quality of the Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only extra feature is the original theatrical trailer, still trading on the original Emmanuelle's reputation as the "longest caress in French cinema". -Piers Ford.

Review Emmanuelle [1974] / Momentum Pictures:When Emmanuelle was released in 1974 it caused uproar in France. President Pompidou tried to ban it, effectively catapulting it into the year's "must see" category of films and into history as the point at which soft-core pornography dallied with the mainstream and conceived a new kind of arty erotic cinema with equal appeal to both sexes. As a result it acquired the patina of a classic of its kind and spawned a whole series of sequels. Based on Emmanuelle Arsan's erotic novel and dubbed "the longest caress in French cinema", it tells the slight tale of a young expatriate woman in Thailand, encouraged by her husband-and practically everyone she meets-to explore her sexuality through free love and the pursuit of fantasy. It also launched the career of Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel in the iconic title role. Never mind that the original character was Eurasian. Kristel's European good looks and lissom figure earned her a unique kind of big screen immortality. It's dreamily filmed by director Just Jaeckin and director of photography Richard Suzuki, with lots of simulated, soft-focus sex, much of it between Emmanuelle and her female conquests. Only an unpleasant rape scene in which she is the prize in a Thai boxing match, acknowledges that sexual fantasy has its dark side. The picture survives as a period piece from a more innocent time: the men, with their dated moustaches and tight pants, lack only medallions, and there's some deathless dialogue: "You like it [masturbation], don't you?" "Well yes, but I haven't had breakfast. [+]
" Even so, parts of Emmanuelle, made in the pre-AIDS era, have an almost quaint charm. True, the languorous escapades of the jetsetters are juxtaposed with rough images of the Thai sex trade, revealing among other things exciting new ways to smoke a cigarette. But Kristel's insouciance is often hypnotic. On the DVD: Presented in 16:9 widescreen format, this release effectively replicates the original cinema viewing experience, down to the dreadful dubbed dialogue. Whichever language you watch it in, the actors' lips move in a world of their own and the Dolby Digital soundtrack only emphasises the muffled quality. Only Pierre Bachelet's "plinky-plonky" theme comes across with any clarity. Extras are limited to the original theatrical trailer. -Piers Ford.
