Review CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Complete Season 3 [2001] / Momentum Pictures Home Ent:

Now firmly established as one of the top-rated television dramas, by its third year CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is a show positively glowing with confidence. Even when individual cases seem either too contrived or too easily resolved, the indefatigable night shift at the Las Vegas PD crime lab always look the part, solving conundrums and discovering microscopic damning evidence while, apparently, never shedding their own loose hair or skin cells all over the supposedly quarantined crime scenes. In reality, Catherine Willows' flowing blonde locks would contaminate any evidence she collected, but in the world of CSI only the bad guys leave body parts behind-the CSIs themselves are so good they're positively pristine. The 23 episodes of season 3 on this five-disc set present more deliciously bizarre situations for the problem-solving sleuths: cannibalism, snuff movies, dwarfs, death while drag racing, bodies falling from the sky, and various dismemberments all tax the team's acumen. These are all double or multiple-case episodes, though in a characteristic trick of the writing sometimes apparently unrelated murders turn out to be connected (or vice versa, as in "Blood Lust," in which a road-accident victim is not what he seems, and the death of the driver at the hands of an angry mob is made all the more tragic). The mix of genuine forensic science with the glossiest Jerry Bruckheimer production values, plus the virtues of a good ensemble cast headed by William Peterson's modern-day Sherlock Holmes, remains as compelling as ever. -Mark Walker.

Review The Burning Bed [1985] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:

This controversial, 1984 made-for-television movie gave Farrah Fawcett her first true showcase as an actress. Playing an abused wife who kills her monstrous husband (Paul Le Mat), Fawcett demonstrates a facility with the moral ambiguities of the story, which concerns the painful but fascinating questions of where justice lies. The Burning Bed has fine support from Richard Masur and Grace Zabriskie, and the assured direction is by Robert Greenwald (Xanadu). -Tom Keogh.

Run time: 700 min.
Price: £48.99

Review The Sopranos Series 4 [1999] / Warner Home Video:

Unlike the previous three, this fourth series of The Sopranos largely eschews an overriding story arc in favour of developing several interrelated plot strands, most of which are then left dangling tantalisingly at the end. This year Tony's many extra-marital affairs finally come home to roost, even as he faces challenges to his leadership from within and without. Paulie Walnuts simmers with resentment over his perceived neglect, a resentment only exacerbated by Christopher's promotion; while Christopher's growing drug habit undermines Tony's trust in him. Paulie makes overtures to Johnny Sack and the New York family; Sack himself bears a deadly grudge against Ralph Cifaretto, and also embroils Tony in a dispute between the two families. Ralph and Tony clash over a shared interest in both a race horse and a goomar-you just know it's going to end in something much worse than tears. The women have as many problems, though: Adriana has reluctantly turned FBI informer, a drug-addled Christopher squashes her dog, and she has to confess that she can't have children; Carmela falls maddeningly, frustratingly in love with one of Tony's closest companions; Janice inveigles herself into Bobby's affections in a display of breathtaking emotional manipulation; while Meadow can no longer conceal the disgust she feels about her father's business, and Dr Melfi is increasingly sidelined, since Tony's behavioural issues have become, to all practical purposes, untreatable. The whole ends on a downbeat note as personal disillusionment overshadows the mob politics. With the imminent arrival of Steve Buscemi to the cast, the fifth series is primed to be an explosive one. -Mark Walker.

Review Sex And The City - Series 1 [1999] / Warner Vision International:

A series that's as much about one as the other, the wonderfully funny, touching and utterly genuine Sex and the City dares to portray real adults in a thoroughly realistic environment. Filmed in and around the streets of Manhattan, the show brings New York life-and specifically singles life-alive as no other has done before. Like its HBO stablemate The Sopranos, this is TV for grown-ups: frank and non-patronising, dizzyingly well written and devastatingly accurate in its characterisations. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Carrie Bradshaw, Manhattan's "sexual anthropologist" whose weekly newspaper column gives the series its title. Kristen Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon are her acerbic, cynical, thirtysomething singleton pals: gossip, sex, men, shoes, shopping, sex, designer clothes, fashion and sex dominate their affluent yet incomprehensibly empty lifestyles as they move from swanky restaurant opening to night club to art exhibition in the relentless pursuit of fulfilment and validation. Conspicuously, the men in their lives-from "toxic bachelors" to "modelisers" and beyond-fail to provide either, leaving the women to pick up the pieces after each shattered relationship. Adapted from Candace Bushnell's bestseller, in the first season Carrie embarks on her long and tortuous liaison with "Mr Big" and watches wryly as her pals seek solace with various members of the male sex, electric appliances and even, disastrously yet briefly, celibacy. On the DVD: Fortunately, 12 outstanding episodes are their own selling point here, since the presentation of these two discs leaves something to be desired. Although Region 2 encoded, inexcusably the broadcast format is American NTSC not PAL, so if you don't have a reasonably modern TV you'll have trouble playing the discs in the first place; there's a tiny promo feature and teaser trailers, plus cast biographies and synopses that pop up at the beginning of every episode. The interface lacks a "Play All" facility, forcing you to skip back and forth from the main menu after each episode. [+]
Add to that some pretty nasty packaging and this set won't win any prizes for presentation. But the shows themselves are a constant delight: anyone who's ever dated or been dumped should own this set. -Mark Walker.
