Review Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 3 [1995] / Paramount Pictures:

Deep Space Nine's third series begins eventfully, with Sisko promoted to captain and being gifted a prototype warship equipped with a cloaking device, while Odo learns where he came from. In the two-part opening tale, this clever gambit is played to hook viewers into the idea of DS9 becoming an ongoing mystery/conflict show. Why the sudden intense format tweaking? Mostly this was to ensure the show continued to thrive when a really rather greedy production hierarchy fast-tracked Voyager onto the air mid-season (cue unnecessary crossover episode with Tuvok). Of greater concern was ratings thief Babylon 5, which played its counter-Trek cards at precisely the right time. Fortunately the result (initially at least) was a genuine boost for DS9. Cast members seemed to have hit their stride and played off one another more assuredly than before. For example, Odo's character took several additional interesting twists, especially in his relationship with Kira. Rene Auberjonois had a very good year, directing two episodes to boot. Avery Brooks had begun this trend with the previous year's penultimate show. The real surprise was seeing Jonathan Frakes's name working behind the camera on three occasions, because he also appeared on screen in his alternate rogue Riker role, when Thomas dramatically steals the Defiant. [+]
Other welcome cameos that aided the feeling of casual camaraderie included the return of Lwaxana Troi, as well as first appearances by Quark's Mum, the spooky Founder Leader, the lovely Leeta and the sneaky Eddington. Clint Howard-a cult Trek figure-was briefly welcomed back, and with the many faces of Jeffrey Combs another was born. Stories progressed the complicated Bajoran/Cardassian healing process, while simultaneously brewing potential conflicts far worse than the behind-the-scenes ratings war. -Paul Tonks.

Review Traffik [1989] / Cinema Club:

At the end of the 1980s, Traffik was an early indication that Channel 4's financial investment in film would be worthwhile and not pull any punches. The series depicts a soulless society embroiled in the catchments of its own greed. Drug trafficking is a political hot potato that one man alone cannot hope to spearhead a war against. Minister Jack Lithgow (Bill Paterson) realises this somewhere in between negotiating an international crackdown policy and discovering his daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) is hooked on the very thing he's fighting to eradicate. This is one of three threads masterfully interwoven in Simon Moore's script and spread across six episodes. At the other corners of the Heroin triangle are Hamburg and Pakistan. In Germany, businessman Rosshalde is arrested on smuggling charges. This triggers a startling personality change in his wife Helen (Lindsay Duncan), who takes on a Lady Macbeth-like role in destroying everything obstructing her financial security. In Kurachi we follow the woes of farmer Fazal (Jamal Shah) as he finds work with drug baron Tariq Butt (Talat Hussain). Performances are outstanding as the taut plot draws these elements toward a cold finale. [+]
BAFTAs were awarded to the series' design, camerawork and sound. Technically it's as brilliant as Steven Soderbergh's 2000 cinematic remake Traffic. But in the characterisations of a populace who are all wrong in their views on drug use, you'll be hard pressed to find a better presentation of the subject on the big or small screen. On the DVD: Eight chapters per episode; picture and sound adequate. That's it. Like the subject of the series, the search for extra happiness is a fruitless one. -Paul Tonks.

Review Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 2 [1995] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

The second series of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine must have caused mixed feelings for those involved. There was a sense of optimism behind the scenes that stemmed from having gained a loyal following-made up of plenty of new fans-in its relatively short first year. The show had genuinely succeeded in being different from its predecessors. Better still, The Next Generation would be bowing out gracefully halfway through this year. So it was that, with several more series guaranteed, the writers changed tack from standalone tales and into long-running story arcs. This was immediately evident in the format-testing three-part opening. Through the actions of Kira and her old pals, we saw that the Bajorans would only ever work toward their own agenda, whereas the Cardassians easily switched sides to suit their various agendas. The Federation was hardly innocent of political machinations either, especially with the discovery of the Maquis terrorists a few episodes later. This three-way dynamic would underpin the entire run of the show. Expanding upon it was the handover of the Klingon saga from The Original Series and TNG, in which old warhorses Kor, Kang and Koloth first appeared. [+]
That left the Ferengi to maintain an element of fun with their Rules of Acquisition (Number 112: "Never have sex with the boss's sister"), exploration of their sexist culture and, naturally, through everything touched by the scene-stealing Quark (who was rewarded with a cameo for his real life wife). What seemed like standalone stories-Odo meeting his mentor, a trip into The Original Series' parallel universe and the culminating encounter with some super-soldiers (the Jem'Hadar)-later turned out to be more optimistic seed-sowing. Unfortunately, this second series also began with some concern about a competitor franchise, which started at exactly the same time as TNG ended. The impact of Babylon 5 on DS9 and TV SF in general by the end of the year could never have been envisioned at the start. -Paul Tonks.

Review Our Friends In The North - 1964-1974 [1996] / Sony Bmg:

An epic saga stretching from 1964 to 1995, Our Friends in the North follows the lives of four young people in North-East England. Nicky Hutchinson (Christopher Eccleston) is initially courting Mary Soulsby (Gina McKee) but the relationship cools when it takes second place to his campaigning for Harold Wilson's Labour Party. She weds Tory Tosker Cox instead, but their marriage is a miserable one, living in a rot-infested high rise block built following a dubious new housing scheme. Meanwhile, "Geordie" Peacock, finally tiring of his drunken, abusive father, headbutts him and hitches down to London, where he ends up working for a surrogate "family" led by Malcolm McDowell's flash Soho sex club baron. Over the years, the paths of these characters intertwine, diverge then cross again, albeit occasionally stretching the bounds of plausible coincidence. The drama takes place against the backdrop of local authority and police corruption in the 60s, the radical far-left militancy of the early 70s, Thatcher's election, the 1984 miner's strike and the subsequent "murder" of Northern communities. What's brilliant about Our Friends is its melding of the personal and the political, with the soap opera of family estrangement played out against a backdrop of social decline. Peter Vaughn, playing Nicky's Dad as a former Jarrow marcher stricken by Alzheimer's, is especially poignant. If you didn't see this the first time, do so now. On the DVD: Our Friends in the North has a bonus disc featuring a discussion with writer Peter Flannery and the producers and directors in which the making of the programme is revealed to have been as epic and protracted a saga as the drama itself. [+]
There are interviews also with stars Christopher Eccleston and Gina McKee. -David Stubbs.

Review Prison Break - Season 1 - Part 1 [2005] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

Whatever you do, don't give up on Prison Break. Depending on who you talk to, it either races out of the traps at speed, or is a dish that takes some while to warm up. While this reviewer verges towards the latter, by the time the show gets it first few episodes under its belt, it's perfectly clear that this is one hell of a ride. It's built on a very simple concept. Michael Scofield gets himself arrested and thrown into Fox River prison. It's a deliberate ploy, for not only was he involved in the prison's structural design, but his brother also happens to be on death row, for a crime that he believes he didn't commit. In short, the idea is to break in so that he can break them both out. From this simple premise, Prison Break then builds. With game nods of the hat to the staple prison movie clichés you'd expect, it nonetheless pulls a few trump cards. Firstly, it takes time to built up interesting characters. [+]
Next, it wisely keeps a parallel storyline running outside the prison walls. And thirdly, it's casting is quite superb. Its final ace is the intricately plotted escape plan itself, and the numerous twists and turns along the way. This initial boxset gets you just past the halfway point of the first season, and at times it's likely to leave you flat-out breathless. At worst, you're likely to be relentlessly entertained, and pulling out that credit card to order the concluding boxset. For Prison Break is that rare thing-a show that accepts it's riddled with clichés, but is clever enough to work that to its advantage. Gripping viewing. -Simon Brew.

Review Shark - Season 1 - Complete [2006] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

It's about time somebody gave the wonderful James Woods a role as good as this. Shark casts him as an attorney who's happy to go about things by whatever methods get him the necessary results. Whether it involves bending the rules or cutting corners, when we meet Sebastian Stark he's a defence attorney par excellence. But it soon changes for him, and he ends up taking a job on the other side of the fence instead. And as he changes allegiances to become a prosecutor instead, he leads a rough and ready team on the track to getting justice. Thus begins Shark, another in a line of quality American legal imports that are worthy of your time. This DVD set brings together the entire first season run of Shark, and there's plenty to enjoy. Woods may have changed sides in the show, but his methods are as unconventional as ever (think House, but in the legal system, and you're on the right track). As a result, the show is fast, funny, and terrific entertainment. And let's make no bones about this: as commendable as Shark's supporting cast is, it's Woods we're here to see, and he doesn't disappoint. [+]
He positively eats up the screen, and it's an absolute delight to see an actor as strong as him at the very top of his game. Tightly scripted, swiftly directed and rarely dull, Shark is a treat that's well worth taking for a spin. Highly recommended. -Jon Foster.
