Review Doctor Who Frontier in Space [1973] [1963] / 2 Entertain Video:

Opening with the Doctor, John Pertwee, materialising the Tardis in a starship to avoid collision "Frontier in Space" is the first half of a space opera that ends on a cliff-hanger leading into "The Planet of the Daleks" (1973). It is the 26th century and the Ogrons, previously seen in "Day of the Daleks" (1972), are raiding spaceships from both the Earth and Draconian empires, intent on provoking interstellar war. Ranging from deep space to Earth and Draconia, from a lunar penal colony to the Ogron homeworld, the Doctor discovers that the Master (Roger Delgado in his final performance in the role) is set to plunge the galaxy into chaos. Fans expecting Dalek action should be aware that the psychotic pepperpots only appear at the end, although Katy Manning proves heroine Jo Grant's resilience, and thanks to especially strong make-up and costuming, the oriental stereotype Draconians are an impressive addition to the show's gallery of aliens. The inevitable cheap special effects and some flaky continuity aside, this is Doctor Who near its ambitious best, even if splitting six episodes onto two tapes does seem highly unnecessary. Sci-Fi aficionados will not need much convincing that this story provided inspiration for Babylon 5's Earth-Minbari war. -Gary S. Dalkin.

Review Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - The Body In The Library [1984] / BBC:

The suspense of Miss Marple: The Body in the Library isn't the edge-of-your-seat variety; it's simply a perplexing puzzle that keeps niggling at the back of your mind. Just as one piece of the puzzle falls into place, another gap opens up, thanks to one of Agatha Christie's most intricate plots. Considering what a long film this is (150 minutes, lengthier than most Christie adaptations), it's impressive how tightly the mystery grips the viewer's attention. And not a second of Joan Hickson's marvellous performance as Miss Marple should be missed (the other performances, alas, fall short, except for Gwen Watford as Dolly Bantry, in whose library the body is found). To people meeting her for the first time, Jane Marple appears to be a sweet old dear, whose comments on the murder investigation are more likely to involve an obscure recollection of a frog jumping out of someone's coat than to have any direct bearing on the case. But as Christie fans know, beneath that dithery exterior lies one of the shrewdest minds in England. Hickson's understated portrayal reveals the humour in her character without ever making a mockery of Miss Marple and the results are delightful to watch. -Larisa Lomacky Moore, Amazon. com.

The second series of Andromeda unveils a change in approach. A new traditionally heroic title theme, accompanied by rousing voice-over is one noticeable difference. Another is Kevin Sorbo's even shorter haircut. But it's back to the gore and violence that marked the cliffhanging finale of the first year with "The Widening Gyre", where many perils are resolved while others are revealed. An all-too-short deadline is also imposed on Dylan's Commonwealth dream (confirming the show's additional two-series renewal), when it's confirmed how long it will be before the travelling Magog arrive. "Exit Strategies" is all about inner demons. Poor Harper is left with a very real internal problem that leads him to contemplate the unthinkable. Rommie is wrestling with an alternate physical self. Rev is battling his religious conscience against his very survival. With so much B-plot, you could almost overlook the main story that sees the Maru crash land on an ice world-if the dazzling FX would let you that is. [+]
Beka gets an overdue share of romantic attention in "A Heart for Falsehood Framed". A sacred gem is the nub of a diplomatic dispute. In typically unpredictable fashion, the plot contrives to see all interested parties caught up in a multi-layered game of switching fakes. Some new angles appear in "Pitiless as the Sun". In case anyone's forgotten, Trance is given opportunity to thicken the mystery surrounding exactly what she is. This occurs as we meet a brand-new adversary, the unsavoury Pyrians. Xenophobia, drug addiction and slavery are all scrutinised in this episode-enough plot for an X-File. This is funny since Cigarette-Smoking Man William B Davis guest stars. Hunting for a once-glorious leader who would benefit Dylan's cause, the Maru and crew make a "Last Call at the Broken Hammer", a run-down bar in the middle of a wasteland. There are lots of twists in a mystery of hidden identities and agendas amongst the bar's patrons. Watch out for Gordon Woolvett's real-life wife among them. Another welcome sight in this episode is a change of wardrobe for the regulars, who have been sweating it out in the same gear for far too long. -Paul Tonks.
