Review Kind Hearts And Coronets [DVD] [1949] / Warner Home Video:Set in Victorian England, Robert Hamer's 1949 masterpiece Kind Hearts and Coronets remains the most gracefully mordant of Ealing Comedies. Dennis Price plays Louis D'Ascoyne, the would-be Duke of Chalfont whose Mother was spurned by her noble family for marrying an Italian singer for love. Louis resolves to murder the several of his relatives ahead of him in line for the Dukedom, all of whom are played by Alec Guinness, in order to avenge his Mother-for, as Louis observes, " revenge is a dish which people of taste prefer to eat cold". He gets away with it, only to be arraigned for the one murder of which he is innocent. Guinness' virtuoso performances have been justly celebrated, ranging as they do from a youthful D'Ascoyne concealing his enthusiasm for public houses from his priggish wife ("she has views on such places") to a brace of doomed uncles and one aunt, ranging from the doddery to the peppery. Miles Malleson is a splendid doggerel-spouting hangman, while Valerie Hobson and Joan Greenwood take advantage of unusually strong female roles. But the great joy of Kind Hearts and Coronets is the way in which its appallingly black subject matter (considered beyond the pale by many critics at the time) is conveyed in such elegantly ironic turns of phrase by Dennis Price's narrator/anti-hero. Serial murder has never been conducted with such exquisite manners and discreet charm. -David Stubbs.

Review We Dive At Dawn [DVD] [1943] / Simply Media:We Dive at Dawn (1943) tells of the encounter between a British submarine and a German warship in the Baltic Sea. John Mills gives a dependable performance as the submarine commander, with Eric Portman the pick of a strong supporting cast. Director Anthony Asquith finds the balance between action sequences and "in situ" dialogue, and there's an evocative score from Louis Levy. The film has long been underrated and deserves reappraisal. -Richard Whitehouse.

Review The Defiant Ones [DVD] [1958] / MGM Entertainment:This 1958 variation on Huck Finn's adventures with Jim finds a white convict (Tony Curtis) chained to a black convict (Sidney Poitier) as they both escape their captors. With each man literally stuck with the other, racial conflicts take a back seat to survival. Directed by Stanley Kramer (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner), the film's obvious consciousness-raising is mitigated by a pair of raw performances from the stars, memorable appearances by Lon Chaney Jr. and Cara Williams, and Kramer's strong storytelling abilities. The Defiant Ones' award-winning script was cowritten by blacklisted writer-actor Nedrick Young. -Tom Keogh.

Review Peggy Sue Got Married [DVD] [1986] / Uca:Francis Ford Coppola's passable 1986 comedy stars Kathleen Turner as an unhappy, middle-aged woman who goes back in time to her high school years and meets her future husband (Nicolas Cage) all over again. A lightweight entry from Coppola, the film has some clever, backward-looking jokes; and the lead actress does bring intelligence and searching emotions to her role. Cage (Coppola's nephew)-who specialised in these dumb-guy roles back then (see Raising Arizona)-is in sharp, raw form. Worth a visit, but don't expect to be bowled over this time by the legendary director. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review The Score [DVD] [2001] / Pathe Distribution:In the heist thriller The Score director Frank Oz partners Robert De Niro with hotshot upstart Edward Norton and heavyweight legend Marlon Brando. De Niro plays a weary thief tempted by wily old associate Brando into, yes, one last job-a plan to steal a priceless sceptre from Montreal's Customs House. You'd have to be determinedly grumpy not to get half a kick out of Brando, De Niro and Norton-more than holding his own-coolly bouncing off one another in a Method paradise. Brando may be enormous and breathing heavily with every move, but his technique is as agile as it ever was; he still seems spontaneously clever. Oz doesn't have the most crackling visual style in the world: the film is far too smooth for tension and keeps tapping Howard Shore's music score to do most of the work in that department. The divine Angela Bassett is once again totally wasted in a 10-minute throwaway role as De Niro's girlfriend. The Score isn't anything new, and there isn't a single surprise, but if you're into this sort of thing you will respond to its polished familiarity. -Steve Wiecking, Amazon. com On the DVD: The Score on DVD offers a limited but interesting set of special features, from the 12-minute making of featurette-concentrating on the most enjoyable aspect of the film, the actors-to additional footage which shows De Niro and Brando's love of improvisation. Frank Oz and cinematographer Rob Hahn provide an insight into the intricacies of filmmaking in their commentary. [+]
The Dolby Digital soundtrack enhances the silence between the dramatic crescendos, and the quality of the 2. 35:1 ratio picture gives depth to the many shadows in which the characters move. Subtitles include English for the Hard of Hearing. -Nikki Disney.

Review The Bonfire Of The Vanities [1990] [DVD] [1991] / Warner Home Video:Is it time, after the anonymous disaster of Mission to Mars, to give Brian De Palma's famously doomed film of Tom Wolfe's bulky novel Bonfire of the Vanities another chance? The uproarious ins and outs of the film's troubled production have become well-known via Julie Salamon's account of its making, The Devil's Candy, and fans of that might want to flick between page and screen to see just when Melanie Griffith caused untold continuity problems by having her breasts inflated. Techno buffs will surely appreciate the pointless but somehow wonderful trickery of an extended tracking shot at the outset that exists only to last a few seconds longer than the one in Orson Welles Touch of Evil (1958). Tom Hanks was rather better cast than was generally allowed, as "master of the universe" Sherman McCoy, who comes a cropper after a hit-and-run accident, since his nice-guy act shows intriguing cracks. And even Bruce Willis does his best on a hiding to nothing as the drunken writer. It is funny in parts, agonising in others, and misses Wolfe's tone-but somehow its failures might make it as symptomatic of the long-gone excesses of the early 90s as the novel was of the 80s. -Kim Newman.
