Review Jag - Season 2 / Jag:JAG (Judge Advocate General): The Complete Second Season finds former Navy pilot turned JAG lawyer Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) partnered with an attractive marine attorney, Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), in both the prosecution and defense of military service personnel charged with crimes. Helped by boyish, chipmunk-cheeked law student Lt. Cmdr. Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux) and guided by the tough but fair Admiral Chegwidden (John M. Jackson), Harm and Mac take on some pretty novel cases, beginning with the bizarre theft of the Declaration of Independence by Mac's own uncle, a renegade colonel trying to make a point about the fecklessness of the U. S. government. In "Secrets," a convicted spy (Victor Love) escapes from a Navy brig, taking Chegwidden-who successfully prosecuted him-hostage, and demanding that Harm and the others look into his allegation that the CIA set him up to look like a traitor. Harm often gets assignments that require more than his legal-eagle skills. In "Washington Holiday," he's ordered to escort a Romanian princess (Kiersten Warren) through Washington while her father negotiates with the U. [+]
S. State Department for application to NATO. It's not an unpleasant task by any stretch, but it is perilous, considering an unidentified assassin is lurking around the nation's capital, waiting to kill the royal daughter. "Cowboys and Cossacks" is a tense drama about two Cold War-era warship captains, an American and a Russian, who turn a joint war games exercise into a personal grudge matchwith Harm, Mac, and Bud trapped as official observers. "Rendezvous" is an interesting story about professional ethics that pits Mac against Harm in a case involving a wife abuser-with Mac reluctantly providing the accused man, a monstrous fellow, her best defense. Created by Donald P. Bellisario (Quantum Leap), JAG is never dull and often surprising. -Tom Keogh.

Review The Secret Of Nimh [1982] / MGM Entertainment:In his book, Robert C. O'Brien called his brave widow mouse "Mrs. Frisby", but Disney escapee animator Don Bluth must have thought children would laugh the wrong way at that. They renamed her "Mrs. Brisby" for The Secret of NIMH. That acronym stands for the National Institute of Mental Health, and the rats that live near Mrs. Brisby came from NIMH-they have strange ways. But they're the only ones who can save her house and her children, so Brisby seeks them out with the help of a humorous crow (Dom DeLuise). The magic gets laid on a little thick but this is Don Bluth's most successful attempt to achieve a complete, sincere, animated film. It's often forgotten, but it's a true surprise and a rare treat in the vast wasteland of insubstantial children's fare. [+]

Review Jesus Of Nazareth [1977] / ITV DVD:Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives ample screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the socio-political background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). -Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon. com.

Review Coal Miner's Daughter [1980] / Uca:Sissy Spacek won a much-deserved Oscar for her lead in this entertaining biography of country-music legend Loretta Lynn. British director Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist) brings fine texture to the Kentucky backwoods section of the film, where the teenage Loretta meets her future husband (Tommy Lee Jones), who ultimately pushes her into show business. Lynn's adult life is well covered, from her spouse's philandering to her own on-stage crackups; but between the chapter-and-verse recollections, the script by Thomas Rickman is layered with life and moments of great humour. No wooden portrait, this is a vibrant film made outstanding by the colorful performances of the two leads, as well as Beverly D'Angelo and the Band's Levon Helm. -Tom Keogh.

Review Law and Order: Series 1 [1991] / Universal Pictures UK:From its gritty documentary look to its signature note-knocking "tching-tching" that signals scene changes, Law & Order was a groundbreaking cop show when it debuted in 1990. It is television's most resilient series, surviving huge changes to its ensemble. One of the secrets of the show's durability is its compelling structure. The first half of each hour-long episode is a classic police procedural in which "Law", personified in the first season by partners Greevey (George Dzundza) and Mike Logan (Christopher Noth) investigate a crime and make an arrest. The second half chronicles the ensuing trial, as prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty) and Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) under the supervision of Steven Hill's Adam Schiff (more feisty and animated here than in later seasons). Law & Order is also distinguished by its superb writing. Several episodes take their inspiration from the headlines, including "By Hooker, By Crook" (about a socialite-run call-girl ring) and "Indifference", which recalls the tragic Lisa Steinberg child abuse case. Others deal with such hot-button issues as abortion ("Life Choice") and AIDS ("The Reaper's Helper"). Another plus is the talent pool of character actors who lend their verisimilitude. Guest stars include Samuel L Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Violence of Summer"), The West Wing's John Spencer ("Prescription for Death"), Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon ("Subterranean Homeboy Blues") and The Sopranos' Dominic Chianese ("Sonata for Stolen Organ"). Review Rebel Without A Cause [1955] / Warner Home Video:When people think of James Dean, they probably think first of the troubled teen from Rebel Without a Cause: nervous, volatile, soulful, a kid lost in a world that does not understand him. Made between his only other starring roles, in East of Eden and Giant, Rebel sums up the jangly, alienated image of Dean, but also happens to be one of the key films of the 1950s. Director Nicholas Ray takes a strikingly sympathetic look at the teenagers standing outside the white-picket-fence 50s dream of America: juvenile delinquent (that's what they called them then) Jim Stark (Dean), fast-girl Judy (Natalie Wood), lost-boy Plato (Sal Mineo), slick hot-rodder Buzz (Corey Allen). At the time, it was unusual for a movie to endorse the point of view of teenagers, but Ray and screenwriter Stewart Stern captured the youthful angst that was erupting at the same time in rock 'n' roll. Dean is heartbreaking, following the method-acting style of Marlon Brando but staking out a nakedly emotional honesty of his own. Going too fast, in every way, he was killed in a car crash on September 30, 1955, a month before Rebel opened. He was no longer an actor, but an icon, and Rebel is a lasting monument. -Robert Horton, Amazon. com.
