Review Demon House [1997] / Ilc Entertainment:

From the director of Nightmare Man (1999) and sundry episodes of Due South and The Outer Limits TV series comes Demon House, a schlocky horror flick re-titled to disguise the fact that it's actually Night of the Demons III. Here we see yet another visit by a group of stupid teenagers to a house wherein lies a doorway to Hell. Amelia Kinkade returns as evil hostess Angela, but that's all there is to link back to the previous two movies-they even use an entirely different house! As for the plot: it's Halloween and two girls with car trouble hitch a lift from a vanload of clichéd "kids" who accidentally hold up a Kwik-E-Mart. They hide in the out-of-bounds funeral parlour, Hull House, which-you'll never guess-has a history of mysterious murders. Then, in a surprising twist, they begin to be picked off one-by-one and transformed into a variety of demons. A race ensues to see who will survive until sun-up. The camera trickery is right out of Sam Raimi's vastly superior Evil Dead trilogy, while even the titillating nudity is dispensed with in the first few minutes. Lamberto Bava, son of the Italian horror legend and giallo godfather Mario Bava, teamed up with modern master Dario Argent (co-writer and producer) for this slick gorefest, a triumph of style and special effects over movie logic. Set in a refurbished German movie palace, our hapless soon-to-be victims arrive for a sneak preview of a horror movie only to see the gore unfold in the audience, as well as onscreen. While the exposition remains murky, one patron finds that an infected cut leads to a gooey transformation, and every one of her victims follows suit until the snaggle-toothed monsters outnumber the humans. The survivors, trapped in the tomb of a cinema, must fend off attacks à la George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Borrowing liberally from films such as Dawn of the Dead and The Tingler, Demons also anticipates Scream in its cinema-savvy references, not to mention its undeniably Neve Campbell-ish heroine. The blaring heavy-metal-hard-rock soundtrack and the carnival horror-house atmosphere helps remind us that this is all just stupid fun. Despite the overwhelming body count, excessive gore and rivers of green demon pus, the cartoonishly grotesque killings avoid the sadistic edge of many Italian horror films. Review To the Devil... A Daughter [1976] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Anchor Bay:

Hammer's To the Devil a Daughter was the last film made by the once great studio. Clearly ailing, Hammer again adapted a novel by Dennis Wheatley, the author behind one of their greatest successes, The Devil Rides Out (1967). Unfortunately for the studio, films such as Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Exorcist (1973) had, in the intervening decade, radically changed horror cinema. With American star Richard Widmark echoing Gregory Peck's role in the far more polished The Omen (1976), the film seemed, rather than setting the pace as Hammer once had, to be very much jumping on the 1970's occult band-wagon. Christopher Lee is the satanic ex-communicated priest whose coven plan to incarnate the ancient demon Ashteroth, while a supernaturally beautiful Nastassja Kinski demonstrates the same willingness to disrobe as in Cat People (1982). Even so, this lacklustre, misogynistic film couldn't compete with Carrie and Suspiria (both also 1976) and Hammer thereafter concentrated on TV productions. Surprisingly, director Peter Sykes' next film, Jesus (1979), as well as being the most seen and internationally distributed film ever (with an audience of over two billion by 2000), is also the most faithful portrayal of Christ yet committed to celluloid. -Gary S.
