Review The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy - The Complete Series [1981] / 2 Entertain Video:

The original BBC radio adventures of Arthur Dent (an ape-descendant whose anger at the apparently inexplicable destruction of his home planet Earth, situated in an obscure corner of the outer spiral arm of the galaxy, is expressed in frequent irritation at friendly automatic doors and vending machines) and his travelling companions, Ford Prefect (an itinerant towel-carrying hitch-hiker originally from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse), Zaphod Beeblebrox (the notorious ex-Galactic President and patron of Eccentrica Galumbits, the triple-breasted whore of Eroticon Six) and Marvin the Paranoid Android (who's still suffering from that terrible pain in all the diodes down his left side) proved to be such a success for the BBC that its transition to TV was (almost) inevitable. In 1981 several key members of the radio cast made the move to the small screen. Simon Jones' bewildered Arthur Dent remains the central character, shambling around in his dressing gown (a fact easy to forget on radio); Mark Wing-Davey's Zaphod Beeblebrox is the same as his boastful radio persona, even if the second head utterly fails to convince. Unfortunately, newcomers David Dixon (as Ford Prefect) and the irritating Sandra Dickinson (as Trillian) are no match for their radio predecessors. The problem here is not so much the low-budget look as the script itself, which is lovingly faithful to the radio series in a way that Douglas Adams' novels aren't. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a lucid, satirical, occasionally profound, utterly unique comic invention on radio. As such, it has nothing to gain from TV. The script needs no visual elaboration-that's best left to the listener's own imagination. Only the animated renditions of the Guide itself enhance Peter Jones' wonderfully dry narration; otherwise-paradoxically, perhaps-by supplying images the concept is oddly diminished here. On the DVD: A suitably eclectic not to say eccentric collection of extra features makes this a wholly satisfying two-disc set, neatly packaged in a fold-out slipcase. [+]
On the second disc there's an hour-long "making of" documentary from 1992 featuring contributions from the cast and crew, including Douglas Adams; and then there's even more in a 20-minute section entitled "Don't Panic!". A fascinating behind-the-scenes peek at filming as the clock runs out on studio time and a look at the recording of the original radio series complete the first part. Then navigate to the "Outer Planets" to find outtakes, a deleted scene, Zaphod's animatronic second head on Tomorrow's World and Peter Jones's witty and shambolic introduction to the first episode, plus more besides. The series itself is presented in standard 4:3 ratio and Dolby stereo. -Mark Walker.

Set around a London bus depot, On the Buses starred Reg Varney as Stan, an ageing bachelor and driver of the No. 11 bus who still lives with his Mum (Doris Hare), his plain sister Olive (Anna Karen) and disgruntled brother-in-law Arthur (Michael Robbins). At work, he fraternises with the laddish and lecherous Jack (Bob Grant), with whom he pursues innumerable (and improbable) giggly, mini-skirted "clippies" (conductors) and cheeks the beady-eyed and punctilious bus inspector, Blakey (Steven Lewis) Despite its immense popularity, On the Buses hasn't dated well. Like the buses themselves, the jokes don't arrive very often and when they do, they're visible a long way off. The studio audience whoops cathartically at anything remotely alluding to sex-even a bared male nipple-making you wonder at the repressed nature of British society in 1969. In later decades it would come to be treasured as somewhat creaky kitsch by audiences nostalgic for an age of politically incorrect innocence. On the DVD: On the Buses has no extra features here. The original black and white versions have scrubbed up reasonably well, although defects such as fading sound and poor dubbing have proven beyond amendment. -David Stubbs.

Review To The Manor Born - Series 3 - Episodes 1 To 3 [1979] / Acorn Media:

To the Manor Born is another BBC sitcom from the genre's golden age, one that came to dominate the ratings during its initial three series run from 1979-80. Providing Penelope Keith with her first major role after The Good Life, the show focuses on a way of life that now appears hard to comprehend, with storylines concerning hunt balls, village committees and eccentric brigadiers only adding to the dated feel. What provided the programme's key interest, however, was not the terribly quaint Little England setting but the burgeoning relationship between Keith's Audrey Fforbes-Hamilton and Richard De Vere (Peter Bowles), the new owner of Audrey's old home, Grantleigh Manor. It's all very, very English (the show is set in a village called Cricket St. Thomas) and the continuing use of farce almost creates a sense of parody: but look beyond the infuriating stereotypes and there is some sharp writing going on, predating the city vs countryside debate by nearly two decades. Penelope Keith is, as ever, fantastic value and while new viewers may simply not get the joke, those after a spot of nostalgia could do far worse. -Phil Udell.

Review Only Fools And Horses - The Complete Series 6 [1981] / 2 Entertain Video BBCV 6817:

You'll need no incentive to watch Series 6 of Only Fools and Horses beyond the knowledge that the very first episode of the six herein is the one in which Del takes that legendary pratfall when leaning against a non-existent bar counter. This is without doubt one of the greatest moments in British TV comedy. Other than that, what do we get? Well, this is the series in which Rodney first takes up with Cassandra. Gwyneth Strong's deftly underplayed, near-deadpan approach to the role of Rodney's soulmate is perhaps one of the most underrated elements in the show's entire run, even if the writers rather ran out of things to do with her almost at once. Ironically, then, despite her introduction, this isn't the strongest of Only Fools collections. Nevertheless, there are enough gems to remind you just why this show was such a success, among them the Spanish holiday episode in which Rodney has to pretend to be 14 and the propane-filled blow-up dolls episode, which really doesn't need a punchline. On the DVD: Only Fools and Horses, Series 6 two-disc set is presented in standard TV 4:3 ratio, with no special features-unless you count the injunctions on each disc's menu to insert the other disc if you want to watch the other episodes, ". you plonker!".
