Review Operation Good Guys - Series 3 [1997] / 2 Entertain Video:

With the seeming plethora of "fly on the wall" documentaries that abound on television, spoof police show Operation Good Guys was well timed, if not perfectly executed. Initially well observed and well received, by this third series the ideas were beginning to run dry. The programme still works when lampooning the documentary genre (the voice over and camera techniques are all cannily accurate) and there are some genuinely brilliant moments. The writers, however, appear to have lost confidence in the original idea and have been looking for more and more far-fetched plot devices (desert islands, religious cults) to bolster the material, pitching Operation Good Guys uncomfortably between satire and sitcom. Ignoring the golden rule of spoofing (play it straight, something that Police Squad did to such tremendous effect), much of the humour is too forced, too obvious. For far better television parody look to The Day Today, Knowing Me Knowing You, and People Like Us. -Phil Udell.

Review Friends, Series 7 - Episodes 9-12 [1995] / Warner Home Video:

Season 7: lots happened behind the scenes between seasons and early on in the seventh year of the hit comedy, leaving audiences speculating this might be the last. Perry became seriously ill again, and returned looking more emaciated than ever. Cox regained weight, but despite finishing Scream 3 happily, things were already rocky with David Arquette. Much was made in the press about Aniston marrying Brad Pitt, of course, but the real news (allaying fans' fears) was NBC's expensive renewal of the cast for two years at $750,000 per episode each (more than six times their previous increase). Onscreen, at least there was Chandler and Monica's engagement lasting the whole year, despite predictable ups and downs (eg: "T. O. W. the Truth About London" revealing that Monica fancied Joey). By the time we finally get to "T. O. [+]
W. Chandler's Dad" (Kathleen Turner!), it seems inevitable that the two-part finale will be an insane mess-but with a happy-ish ending. Sure enough, "T. O. W. Chandler and Monica's Wedding" features Gary Oldman joining in the chaos as Chandler repeatedly goes missing. Other star turns in the year were Seinfeld's Jason Alexander as a suicidal Office Manager, Susan Sarandon as soap queen bitch Jessica Lockhart, Denise Richards as one of Ross and Monica's endless number of cousins and Winona Ryder as a surprise old friend, prompting "T. O. W. Rachel's Big Kiss". But perhaps the most telling instalment of this weirdly atmospheric year was "T. O. W. They All Turn Thirty". It suggested that maybe the Friends are all getting too old to carry on living their frivolous lives the same way after all. -Paul Tonks.

In the second volume of Friends Series 8, the next stage of Rachel's pregnancy is coping with everyone else's reactions and expectations. Immediately in "The One with Rachel's Date" we learn that Ross can't distinguish between father and friend. While their relationship grows ever more complicated, Phoebe just can't sit still as she moves from an infatuation with a sous-chef to her twin sister's fiancé (guest star Sean Penn). "The One with the Halloween Party" is when they meet, making for typically daft fun with the gang in costume: Monica is Catwoman, Phoebe is Supergirl, Chandler is The Velveteen Rabbit, Ross is Spudnik and Joey is Chandler! Penn's cameo continues into "The One with the Stain": while Rachel prays for an old lady to kick the bucket so she can get her apartment, Monica is concerned about the Maid she arranged. But that's nothing compared to her concerns over "The One with the Stripper" that she inadvertently arranges for Chandler! Highlights of this volume include meeting Rachel's explosive father, seeing her hand out cheques instead of candy at Halloween and learning why Chandler should be called Muriel instead of Toby. -Paul Tonks.

Set around a London bus depot, On the Buses starred Reg Varney as Stan, an ageing bachelor and driver of the No. 11 bus who still lives with his Mum (Doris Hare), his plain sister Olive (Anna Karen) and disgruntled brother-in-law Arthur (Michael Robbins). At work, he fraternises with the laddish and lecherous Jack (Bob Grant), with whom he pursues innumerable (and improbable) giggly, mini-skirted "clippies" (conductors) and cheeks the beady-eyed and punctilious bus inspector, Blakey (Steven Lewis) Despite its immense popularity, On the Buses hasn't dated well. Like the buses themselves, the jokes don't arrive very often and when they do, they're visible a long way off. The studio audience whoops cathartically at anything remotely alluding to sex-even a bared male nipple-making you wonder at the repressed nature of British society in 1969. In later decades it would come to be treasured as somewhat creaky kitsch by audiences nostalgic for an age of politically incorrect innocence. On the DVD: On the Buses has no extra features here. The original black and white versions have scrubbed up reasonably well, although defects such as fading sound and poor dubbing have proven beyond amendment. -David Stubbs.
