Review Feeling Minnesota [1996] / Entertainment in Video:There can be few better ways reminding oneself of the key elements in late 1990s left-of-centre Hollywood than watching Feeling Minnesota. The film attempts to draw together most of the main themes from the post-Pulp Fiction world into one whole. The story-young lovers Freddie and Jjacks (sic) on the run from a criminal past-is pure True Romance, with an attempt to throw in a little Cohen brothers' style weirdness. It's not a bad film-how can any film that opens with a Johnny Cash tune not have some degree of style to it?-just one that misses that certain spark. The casting of Diaz and Reeves is hopelessly mismatched, the former's delightfully light touch during the film's many funny moments merely serving to heighten Reeves' clod hopping. He is slightly better when playing opposite brother and husband to Freddie Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio), but is unavoidably the film's weak link. It can't be denied that by pushing all the relevant buttons, Feeling Minnesota manages to provide a couple of hours of reasonably engrossing entertainment but, like the Bob Dylan version of "Ring of Fire" that closes the film, the originals are still the best. On the DVD: The de rigeur credible rock soundtrack is given extra sparkle by the DVD's audio quality, but the extras available are slight. The "making-of" featurette offers little more than one of those infuriating extended adverts that are passed off as film documentaries, while the cast interview section is presented in a series of a few second answers to a succession of uninspiring questions. -Phil Udell.

Review Cruel Intentions 2 [2000] / Uca:There's a reason you haven't heard of Cruel Intentions 2, a straight-to-video "sequel" to the seamy teen romp that had Ryan Phillippe baring his polished behind: it's twice as bad as the first one and is only worth a look to see just how embarrassingly trivial it can get. Writer-director Roger Kumble's original was no classic, but at least the game, nubile cast knew how to smack its lips-his follow-up (which, in tamer form, was to be the pilot for a proposed series called Manchester Prep) can't even pout properly. Phillippe's Sebastian character (here played by a bland, doughy Robin Dunne) is carted back out to be reintroduced to scheming stepsister Kathryn, enacted by a woefully unsexy Amy Adams (Sarah Michelle Gellar played Sebastian's ripe cousin in the first film). The two don't hit it off, and Sebastian-far more sentimental than his big-screen counterpart-immediately decides he's all for love, in the form of pristine deb Danielle (Sarah Thompson). It all amounts to a ponderously cartoonish nothing, and includes a twist ending that renders everything proceeding it completely incomprehensible. Kumble has the film spouting homilies on love and self-esteem, then randomly throws in bare breasts; it's like a horny Saved by the Bell, without the kick or pace of good camp. -Steve Wiecking, Amazon. com.

Review Blue Juice [1995] / Cinema Club:Wax up your boards and hang 10 (or whatever) where the big waves come crashing in: off the English coast at Cornwall. Huh? No endless summer? No two girls for every boy? No, but in Blue Juice one can see what most of us probably never even thought about: the British Isles are indeed islands and, not incongruously, there's a considerable surfing culture with a handful of home-grown legends. One of the latter is JC (Sean Pertwee), a skilled surfer so driven by the challenge and so dedicated to his mates that it threatens his meandering romance with the long-suffering Chloe (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The two have planned an extensive, around-the-world trip as a kind of prelude to discussing marriage, but the arrangement is threatened when three of JC's old childhood chums arrive from London. One of them (played by Steven Mackintosh) is a famous record producer who has sold his soul (in every sense) to reap profits from fashionable electronica. Another (Ewan McGregor) is a chronic screw-up resorting to hustling junk to unsuspecting customers. The last (Peter Gunn) is an anxious sort, terrified of marrying his long-time girlfriend. Together, these four guys look like a pack of nowhere men and they know it: while the story largely focuses on JC and Chloe, there's plenty of material for the supporting characters to indulge in mucho self-loathing. The film never quite jumps off the screen and the script may be hampered by too many layers of character eccentricity, but this is still an enjoyable piece with some fine comic performances. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. Review Local Hero [1983] / Universal Pictures UK:Long before The Full Monty there was this lovely fish-out-of-water comedy by deft Scots writer-director Bill Forsyth (Gregory's Girl). Set in the 1980s during a period of controversy over North Sea oil drilling, Local Hero follows a likeable, woolly American junior executive (Peter Riegert) dispatched from Texas by his blustering boss (a high-spirited Burt Lancaster) to a small fishing village on the coast of Scotland for the purpose of swindling the presumably simple-minded locals out of their drilling rights. The surprise isn't that the villagers turn the tables on the American schemers, but that they do so without displaying a hint of malice. They get a kick out of flummoxing the city slickers. Even Lancaster's greed-head Felix Happer eventually has a change of heart. In outline, this may sound more ordinary than it feels as you're watching it. The fine young British actor Denis Lawson, who had a tiny role as one of the fighter pilots in Star Wars plays Riegert's UK contact, Gordon Urquhart, a sad sack with a noble soul. -David Chute.
