Review Miracle On 34th Street [1947] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

The original 1947 version of this Valentine Davies story follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. Natalie Wood is the little girl who tells him she doesn't believe in Santa, and Maureen O'Hara and John Payne are the couple who help Kris through a trial in which he must prove he's the jolly fellow from the North Pole. A sweet movie and perennial Christmas favourite, Miracle on 34th Street is one of those films that gets under your skin and must be revisited every so often. -Tom Keogh The original 1947 version of the Valentine Davies story Miracle on 34th Street follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. Review Hobson's Choice / The Sound Barrier [1952] / Warner Home Video:

Hobson's Choice (1953) and The Sound Barrier (1952) is a double bill of cleverly juxtaposed films from David Lean's early canon, demonstrating that even without the landmark epics to come, British cinema would have been an infinitely poorer place without his tremendous contribution. Both films reflect his endlessly penetrating view of human behaviour and its perseverance through obstacles great and small. And both are effectively prisms that reflect all the aspects of that view, keeping the audience's sympathies constantly on the move. Hobson's Choice, based on Harold Brighouse's eternally popular 1916 comedy, boasts fine turns from Charles Laughton-at his brilliant, physical best-as the boot-shop owner with three troublesome daughters, and John Mills as the lowly boot maker, elevated and improved by the eldest daughter Maggie in a neat inversion of the Pygmalion fable. But both are kept in their place by Brenda de Banzie's portrayal of Maggie, a performance that glows with intelligence, truth and increasing warmth. The Sound Barrier is a drama about the race for a supersonic aeroplane. Superficially, its setting is quintessential post-World War II Britain: stiff upper lips, twin beds and clipped Rattigan dialogue. But it's prescient stuff. Ralph Richardson's aircraft manufacturer, sinister in his obsession, is an ominously skilful film performance. And Lean's take on the unthinkable cost of human achievement, interwoven with some spectacular cinematography, absorbs and unsettles. [+]
It's especially poignant now that the supersonic age has been summarily ended by Concorde's retirement. On the DVD: Hobson's Choice and The Sound Barrier are both black-and-white films presented in 4:3 picture format, from reasonable prints, and with a mono soundtrack of suitably robust quality for Malcolm Arnold's inventive scores. There are no extras, apart from scene indexes. -Piers Ford.

Review State And Main [2001] / Lions Gate Home Entertainment:

"A sleepy Vermont town", notes writer-director David Mamet, outlining the plot of State and Main, "gets invaded by a movie company and. everyone in the town is suborned, polluted, saddened and ruined. So it's a comedy. " As indeed it is-and, despite his typically acerbic summary, one of Mamet's most light-hearted films. At times, as in the shyly blossoming romance between screenwriter Philip Seymour Hoffman (playing Mr Nice Guy for once) and bookstore-owner Rebecca Pidgeon, it turns almost sentimental. Mamet's views on Hollywood are notoriously jaundiced ("Hell with valet parking", he once called it), but State and Main never really sticks the knife in. Many of the characters-the single-minded, manipulative director, the nympho actress who won't bare her breasts for the camera, the seemingly naïve locals who prove no less devious than the incomers-are strictly from stock, and much of the film covers similar ground to Alan Alda's underrated Sweet Liberty (1985). Some of the plot feels over-contrived, too. [+]
Since they're planning to shoot a movie called The Old Mill, the filmmakers are disconcerted to find on arrival that said mill burned down 40 years ago. Like, the location scouts wouldn't have noticed? Still, Mamet's dialogue is as crisp and literate as ever and the cast turn in diverting performances-especially the ever-excellent William H Macy as the director, and Alec Baldwin, spoofing his own image, as a predatory star with a taste for underage skirt. Altogether State and Main serves up a diverting satire on the lunacies of showbiz, though lacking the last degree of bite. On the DVD: Extras don't amount to much apart from a batch of cast-and-director interviews. Of these, Mamet and Macy (who share a dry sense of humour) offer the best value. Baldwin sounds oddly star-struck over his fellow-actors; "I'm a fan more than anything", he gushes. With Dolby 5. 1 sound and widescreen (1. 85:1) the picture sounds and looks handsome, though in such a dialogue-driven movie visual spectacle's hardly a key priority. -Philip Kemp.

Review Made For Each Other [1939] / Whe Europe Limited:

Produced in a time when films were both literally and figuratively black and white, Made for Each Other was unique in its effective blending of the comedic, the dramatic and, as perhaps some would insensitively say, the melodramatic. Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry and quickly have a baby. But while they-and the audience-are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness. Lombard and Stewart-and the genuinely good people they portray-are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition but the Masons' path is one that many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell's universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It's an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit but its ultimate sentiment-one that celebrates the kindness of strangers-is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine. Look for a great supporting cast, including a blustery Charles Coburn as John Mason's boss and Lucile Watson as Mason's interfering mother. [+]

Review Remington Steele: Seasons 4 & 5 [1983] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / 20th Century Fox:

The fourth season picks up where the third left off - with the disappearance of Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan). As the two-parter ("Steele Searching") opens, Mildred Krebs (Doris Roberts) is in the dumps. Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) seems to be handling the loss of her associate well, but she's just as distraught as Mildred. Fortunately, they're able to track him down in London. That's the good news. The bad news is that Scotland Yard thinks he's a modern day Jack the Ripper. In this episode, Laura also clues Mildred in to the fact that "Remington Steele" is an assumed name and that the agency is actually her creation. Episodes of note include "Forged Steele," in which Steele gambles away the business, "Steele on the Air," in which Mildred becomes a radio sex therapist to solve the murder of a traffic reporter, and "Beg, Borrow or Steele," in which Holt and Steele are reported murdered. Among the fourth year guests are Lawrence Tierney ("Grappling Steele"), Terry O'Quinn ("Coffee, Tea or Steele") and Frances Conroy ("Steele Hanging in There"). As for Steele's trademark movie references, they encompass North by Northwest ("Corn Fed Steele"), D. [+]
O. A. ("Premium Steele"), and Out of the Past ("Steele in the Spotlight").

Review Mrs Doubtfire [1994] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act-buried under layers of latex and padding-is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs Doubtfire's visage. -Tom Keogh.

Review Help I'm A Fish [2001] / Prism Leisure Corporation:

Help! I'm a Fish is an action-packed, entertaining 78-minute animated feature film, made in Denmark and dubbed for British audiences, starring the vocal talents of distinguished actor Alan Rickman and Monty Python's Terry Jones. The plot is simple but creative. Three children-Fly, Chuck and Stella-are on a clandestine fishing trip, when they stumble upon a mad professor whose potion transforms humans into fish. Stella innocently drinks the liquid, becomes a starfish and is thrown into the ocean. In an attempt to save her, the boys follow suit with Fly changing into a Californian flyfish and Chuck into a jellyfish. The antidote falls into the hands (or fins!) of a pilot fish, Joe, who drinks it and acquires human intelligence, the power of speech, a tyrannical desire for world control and a following of militant crabs. The threesome has 48 hours to retrieve the antidote, or they will remain fish forever. Traditional hand-drawn cartoons are interspersed with more modern computerised animations. The variety of life underwater is beautifully portrayed, adding greatly to the colour and interest of the film. Terry Jones is suitably loopy as Professor MacKrill and Alan Rickman creates a villain to match his baddie roles in Die Hard and Prince of Thieves. [+]
There are several key themes including the importance of intelligence, determination and friends and of being kind to animals and respecting the environment. Overall, this is a fast paced video with catchy songs and the occasional scary moment that will excite and delight children aged four and over. -Tracey Hogan.
