Review Barbarians at the Gate [1993] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / HBO Home Video:

The Pax Romana was never optional, it was always imposed. The Roman army both disseminated and enforced Roman civilisation on its Empire, first subjugating recalcitrant peoples, then turning them into good Roman citizens ripe for recruitment into the army. At its height, the Roman army never numbered more than 400,000 soldiers, but with these troops it controlled a region stretching from Scotland to Arabia. It was the world's first professional army, with a formal administrative structure, officer corps, regular pay and, most importantly, thorough training, making it the model for the armies of all modern nation states. The legendary discipline of the Legions enabled them to conquer unruly barbarian hordes and impose the Roman peace throughout the Empire. The Roman army, albeit in a drastically modified form, continued under the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire until the fall of Constantinople in 1453, making it, at nearly 2,000 years old, one of the longest-lived and most conspicuously successful institutions in history. The Roman War Machine consists of four 50-minute documentaries made for The History Channel in 1999 and spread across two tapes. They chart the rise and development of the army in an absorbing if fairly standard documentary format, with plenty of academic talking heads wheeled out to fill in narrative details. Most interesting are the demonstrations of Roman equipment and battle tactics by re-enactors such as the Ermine Street Guard (although made for the History Channel with an American narration, most participants are British). The computer-animated sequences are distinctly minimalist. [+]
Following on from the first tape, Tape 2 opens with "Roman Seige Warfare" and some fascinating demonstrations of siege equipment, including devastatingly deadly bolt-firing catapults and stone-throwing ballistae. The famous sieges of Jerusalem (in 66 AD) and Masada in Judea are described, then the programme settles down to describe the life of a soldier in a typical Roman fort, such as Vindolanda on Hadrian's wall, illustrating the change in the army from an offensive to a defensive force. In the final episode, "Barbarians at the Gate", the steady decline of the Empire is sketched, the military reforms of Diocletian and Constantine are touched upon, as is the process of barbarisation of the army, before the collapse of the Western Empire in the fifth century. Mark Walker.

Review Ealing Comedy DVD Collection - The Ladykillers/Kind Hearts and Coronets/The Lavender Hill Mob/The Man in the White Suit [1955] / Warner Home Video:

Four of the British film industry's best-loved comedies in one box set makes The Ealing Comedy Collection absolutely essential for anyone who has any passion at all for movies. The set contains Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955). Ealing's greatest comedies captured the essence of post-war Britain, both in their evocation of a land once blighted by war but now rising doggedly and optimistically again from the ashes, and in their mordant yet graceful humour. They portray a country with an antiquated class system whose crumbling conventions are being undermined by a new spirit of individual opportunism. In the delightfully wicked Kind Hearts and Coronets, a serial killer politely murders his way into the peerage; in The Lavender Hill Mob a put-upon bank clerk schemes to rob his employers; The Man in the White Suit is a harshly satirical depiction of idealism crushed by the status quo; while The Ladykillers mocks both the criminals and the authorities with its unlikely octogenarian heroine Mrs "lop-sided" Wilberforce. Many factors contribute to the success of these films-including fine music scores from composers such as Benjamin Frankel (Man in the White Suit) and Tristram Cary (The Ladykillers); positively symphonic sound effects (White Suit); marvellously evocative locations (the environs of King's Cross in Ladykillers, for example); and writing that always displays Ealing's unique perspective on British social mores ("All the exuberance of Chaucer without, happily, any of the concomitant crudities of his period")-yet arguably their greatest asset is Alec Guinness, whose multifaceted performances are the keystone upon which Ealing built its biting, often macabre, yet always elegant comedy. On the DVD: The Ealing Comedy Collection presents the four discs in a fold-out package with postcards of the original poster artwork for each. Aside from theatrical trailers on each disc there are no extra features, which is a pity given the importance of these films. The Ladykillers is in muted Technicolor and presented in 1. 66:1 ratio, the three earlier films are all black and white 1. [+]
33:1. Sound is perfectly adequate mono throughout. -Mark Walker.

Review My Girl [1992] / Uca:

A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but My Girl is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Home Alone career, but Anna Chlumsky is unusually sophisticated in her understanding of her character and situation. Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are perfectly stable as the kids' single parents. This is directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). -Tom Keogh.

Review Cinema Paradiso / Umbrella Entertainment:

Giuseppe Tornatore's beautiful 1988 film about a little boy's love affair with the movies deservedly won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and a Special Jury Prize at Cannes. Philippe Noiret plays a grizzled old projectionist who takes pride in his presentation of screen dreams for a town still recovering from World War II. When a child (Jacques Perrin) demonstrates fascination not only for movies but also for the process of showing them to an audience, a lifelong friendship is struck. This isn't just one of those films for people who are already in love with the cinema. But if you are one of those folks, the emotional resonance between the action in Tornatore's world and the images on Noiret's screen will seem all the greater-and the finale all the more powerful. -Tom Keogh.
