Review The Wizard [1989] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Universal Studios:

Less raunchy than Tommy and more conventional than Tron, The Wizard also revolves around gaming. There's even a Bridges on board. In Tron it was Jeff, in The Wizard it's Beau. As opposed to the rock opera's pinball-playing "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," however, quasi-catatonic Jimmy (Luke Edwards) is a video game wiz. While the nine-year-old lives with his mother, half-brothers Corey (Fred Savage, circa The Wonder Years) and Nick (Christian Slater, fresh from Heathers) live with their father, Sam (Bridges). When Jimmy, who recently lost his sister, is placed in a home, Corey busts him out for a trip to California. (Today, Jimmy's condition would be labeled post-traumatic stress disorder. ) As they're leaving Utah, they join forces with gaming enthusiast Haley (Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis), who suggests LA's National Video Game Championships. So, off they go by foot, skateboard, and the kindness of strangers. Sam, Nick, and obnoxious bounty hunter Putnam (Will Seltzer) are close behind. [+]
The outcome may be a foregone conclusion - the fractured family makes their peace - but The Wizard still offers a nostalgic, Nintendo-laden look at 1980s gamer culture (Power Glove, Super Mario Bros. 3 and so on). Plus, sharp-eyed viewers will spot Toby Maguire milling around before the showdown at Universal Studios Theme Park. If not for the hitchhiking, gambling, and reckless automotive destruction - after Putnam takes a knife to Sam's tires, Sam smashes his headlights with a shovel - the movie would be appropriate for all ages. In other words, it earns its PG rating. -Kathleen C. Fennessy.

Review Ally McBeal - Season 4 Part 1 [1998] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

The first half of Ally McBeal's fourth season starts with that all important question, the one Ally has been waiting for from day one: "Ally will you. move in with me?". As always Ally's romantic dreams never quite become a reality and the series continues within the Grimm Fairy Tale world of Ally's love (and quirky work) life. The most important twist this season occurs in the first episode "Sex, Lies and Second Thoughts"-the departure of Tracy Ullman and Ally's current beau, Brian, to be replaced by the series' new heart-throb Larry (Robert Downey Jr). Initially dating both father and son ("Two's a Crowd") Ally cannot help but become besotted by Larry's charisma; he being a fellow lawyer further seals their bond, that is until Larry's past comes back to haunt him. Other highlights include a quirky romance for John ("Reason to Belive"), a charity auction leading to an all male fan-club for John ("Love on Holiday") and a romantic connection for Mark-though the recipient of his affection may have hidden more than he bargained for. Unfortunately the series was outshone by the real-life drama of Calista Flockhart's and Downey's rocky relationship along with Downey's drugs convictions. Even though he won a Golden Globe for his performance, he ultimately had to be dropped from the series. [+]
On the DVD: Not much on offer here for Ally's début into the DVD market. The individual episode menu does offer a language selection of French and English and the subtitles for the Netherlands and French. You also have the option to select chapters from the specific episodes, along with a "previously on Ally McBeal. " for that little reminder of whom Ally is dating now. Although standard for a TV DVD release, the 1. 33:1 aspect ratio and 2. 0 Dolby sound is disappointing for a television series which offers ground-breaking use of special effects. -Nikki Disney.

Review Show Me Love [2000] (NTSC) / Strand Home Video:

Show Me Love is writer/director Lukas Moodyson's brilliant first feature, set in a small town called Amal where nothing exciting ever happens. As far as 16-year-old Elin is concerned, it has to be the dullest town in the world (raves are out of fashion before they even have one), and the spotty boys are even more mind-numbing-destined to fumble their way through the few teenage years left to them before taking inevitable jobs as mechanics and factory workers. Elin's classmate, the achingly shy Agnes, hates Amal too and slowly, over the course of the film and against all odds, the two discover a real and tender connection emerging between them. n As with his follow-up sensation, Together, Moodyson directs his young actors with a subtlety that refuses to patronise or sentimentalise the emotions (all too rare in films about young people and a welcome antidote to the recent spate of mindless US teen flics). As Moodyson understands, adolescence is often the most emotionally grim period of a person's life: teenagers can be absolutely barbaric to each other. That's why the fragile romance that develops between Elin and Agnes is all the more moving, courageous and perhaps even revolutionary. Show Me Love will leave you with a huge grin on your face as Elin and Agnes finally get their triumphant kiss to strains of "I Want to Know What Love Is". If you love good cinema, all indications point towards Moodyson and Sweden being the new face and place to watch: this, his debut film, beat Titanic at the box office in Sweden when released. -Tricia Tuttle.

Review Boogie Nights [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / New Line Home Video:

Even if the notorious 1970s porn-filmmaking milieu doesn't exactly turn you on, don't let it turn you off to this movie's extraordinary virtues, either. Boogie Nights is one of the key movies of the 1990s and among the most ambitious and exuberantly alive American movies in years. It's also the breakthrough for an amazing new director, whose dazzling kaleidoscopic style here recalls the Robert Altman of Nashville and the Martin Scorsese of Good Fellas. Although loosely based on the sleazy life and times of real-life porn legend John Holmes, at heart it's a classic Hollywood rise-and-fall fable: a naive, good-looking young busboy is discovered in a San Fernando Valley disco by a famous motion picture producer, becomes a hotshot movie star, lives the high life and then loses everything when he gets too big for his britches, succumbs to insobriety and is left behind by new times and new technology. Of course, it isn't exactly A Star Is Born or Singin' in the Rain. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (in only his second feature) puts his own affectionately sardonic twist on the old showbiz biopic formula: the ambitious upstart changes his name and achieves stardom in porno films as "Dirk Diggler". Instead of drinking to excess, he snorts cocaine (the classic drug of 70s hedonism); and it's the coming of home video (rather than talkies) that helps to dash his big-screen dreams. As for the britches, well, the controversial "money shot" explains everything. And the cast is one of the great ensembles of the 90s, including Oscar nominees Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore, Mark Wahlberg (who really can act-from the waist up, too!), Heather Graham (as Rollergirl), William H Macy, John C Reilly and Ricky Jay. -Jim Emerson.

Review The Quiet Man [1952] / 4 Front Video:

Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O'Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since-it's no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen-that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. -Robert Horton Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. [+]
