Review Down To Earth Dvd [2001] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

Down to Earth, a tepid reworking of Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait (itself a remake of 1941's Here Comes Mr. Jordan), tries to mould comedian Chris Rock into an amiable romantic lead, but it softens the scathingly observant humour that made Rock a stand-up successor to Richard Pryor. Rock's aggressive style is bracingly expressed in a few good scenes, but through most of this movie-from the directors of American Pie-he struggles with dialogue that would barely pass muster in a low-rated sitcom. Edgy potential loses out to crowd-pleasing with the familiar body-switch formula: by way of premature death and bad timing on the part of heaven's Vegas-styled gatekeepers (played by Eugene Levy and Chazz Palminteri), Rock-as struggling comedian Lance Barton-is reincarnated as a 55-year-old white billionaire with a nasty reputation. Adjusting (too easily) to his racial transition, Lance charms a hospital administrator (Regina King) who's amazed to see the selfish white billionaire turning into romantic philanthropist. This allows plenty of black/white-contrast jokes (did you ever see a fat, middle-aged white guy who's into hip-hop?), and Rock, who co-wrote the screenplay, still manages to work some pointed politics into the movie's good-natured tone. It's guaranteed that some will find Down to Earth quite entertaining, but others will wonder how potent this comedy could have been if Rock had been more willing to confront the harsher truths that lurk beneath the comedy. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review Go Fish [1994] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / MGM:

Rose Troche's first film is a breezy, unrelentingly charming if flyweight study of female friendship and the usual relationship traumas. Guinevere Turner plays Max, an aspiring writer, (she's also the film's co-writer, and co-scripted the screenplay of the recent film American Psycho, in which she came under Christian Bale's knife). Max and her friends Ely, Kia and Daria spend a lot of time talking, cooking, and generally hanging out with that studied coolness that only people in independent movies can perfect. A tentative romance develops, and if not much else happens, at least it doesn't happen stylishly, in trendy black-and-white with snazzy dialogue. Most of all Go Fish deserves credit for barely deigning to engage with the fact that all its protagonists are gay, as if this were just another natural, everyday thing, like being left-handed or tall. Review Bhaji On The Beach [1994] / Cinema Club:

Bhaji on the Beach is the directorial debut of Gurinda Chadha, which-like her next film, What's Cooking-features women as the central characters and seems to involve food at every turn. It's an ensemble piece, which takes a while to establish the characters' relationships with each other. But eventually the focus of the film-based on a story by Meera Syal-gets distilled to a group of women taken on a day trip to Blackpool by a progressive thinking "sister". The skies are suitably grey as they arrive in the English resort town, with the amusement arcades, takeaways and shop fronts looking tacky and run down. There's Ginder (Kim Vithana), who has run away from her violent husband, Hashida (Sarita Khajuria), who has a major decision to make and conservative aunties Asha (Lalita Ahmed) and Pushpa (Zohra Sehgal), not to mention youngsters Ladhu (Nisha K Nayar) and Madhu (Renu Kochar) who are just along for the excitement. As the day wears on, tension mounts between the different generations as secrets come out into the open. It matters little that the plot feels a touch contrived-particularly the convergence of significant characters towards the end-as there's a lot of energy in the performances. The result is a bit rough around the edges, but there's a lot to amuse here, not least in the colourful nod to Bollywood contained in Asha's many dream sequences. -Emma Perry.

"It's a comedy, sort of," a title card announces at the start of Happy Endings -just after Mamie (Lisa Kudrow) has been hit by a car. So it is, but talk about an unhappy beginning! Never fear, writer/director Don Roos will fulfill the promise of that title in several unexpected ways. The story then flashes back to 1983 for Mamie's life-altering encounter with her stepbrother. Mamie and Charley (Steve Coogan) will struggle with its consequences for the rest of the film. Does her teen pregnancy explain the fact that she became an abortion counsellor or that he came out of the closet? Roos doesn't say, but nor does he judge. He loves his characters-foibles and all-in his ambitious, Altman-esque follow-up to the acerbic yet heartfelt >The Opposite of Sex. As before, Kudrow is the center around which the other plotlines revolve (and her uptight, yet likable Mamie couldn't resemble TV's Phoebe less). In the end, though, Maggie Gyllenhaal's seductive Jude and Tom Arnold's sensitive Frank are Roos' most inspired creations. Their relationship is one of contemporary cinema's oddest and most touching. The happy ending for one will be real, the other imaginary, but everyone will earn the one they get. [+]
