For Adam Sandler fans only, this dopey comedy features the former Saturday Night Live star as an overindulged rich guy whose father insists he repeat grades 1 through 12 before taking over the family business. The scenario is perfect for Sandler's infantile leanings (which he has fortunately outgrown in more recent movies), and for the most part the jokes about being too old and too big for the experiment are obvious. Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi turn up in uncredited cameo appearances, but otherwise the film is pretty dismissible, except for those diehards who can't get enough of Sandler. -Tom Keogh.

As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and the second season of The Golden Girls picks up where the first ended. The same classic quartet-Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia-is back, along with their snappy retorts, shoulder pads, and cheesecake. Well, there was one change. In the season premiere, "End of the Curse," Blanche (Rue McClanahan) goes through menopause. Highlights of the 26 episodes include "Ladies of the Evening," featuring a cameo from Burt Reynolds, just a few years prior to his own network sitcom, Evening Shade. As Blanche exclaims, "Mr. Burt Reynolds is one of our finest living actors. I mean, you put Sir Laurence Olivier in Cannonball Run-see what he can do. [+]
" Then there's "Isn't It Romantic?" with Lois Nettleton (In the Heat of the Night) as Dorothy's lesbian friend, Jean, who falls for an unsuspecting Rose (Betty White). As was often the case, a sensitive subject is handled with taste and humor and resulted in an Emmy nomination for Nettleton's performance. Further highlights include a white-wigged Nancy Walker (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda) as Sophia's long-lost sister, Angela, in "The Sisters" and "Long Day's Journey Into Marinara," and a pompadoured George Clooney (ER) in "To Catch a Neighbor. " The final episode of The Golden Girls second season, "Empty Nest," features David Leisure and Oscar winner-Rita Moreno (West Side Story) and sets the scene for creator Susan Harris's 1988 spin-off, Empty Nest (although only Leisure would segue to the new show, while Soap's Richard Mulligan would take over for Moreno). -Kathleen C. Something got lost in translation from 1996's critically acclaimed Japanese comedy, but the American remake of Shall We Dance? is not without charms of its own. In being transplanted from Tokyo to Chicago, the original version's subtle humor is shaken out of its cultural context, but this is an otherwise faithful adaptation in which a weary lawyer (Richard Gere) battles his mid-life crisis with ballroom dancing lessons, while his wife (Susan Sarandon) hires a private detective to see if he's cheating. Those expecting a Jennifer Lopez showcase will be disappointed; her role as the melancholy dance instructor keeps the beautifully lovelorn J-Lo on the sidelines, while a cast of standard-issue supporting characters (especially Stanley Tucci's clandestine faux-Latin dance lover) provide a generous dose of Hollywood-ized comic relief. All of this gives Shall We Dance? a polished sheen of mainstream entertainment that many viewers-and especially ballroom dancers-will find delightfully irresistible. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Review Only Fools and Horses - Miami Twice [1981] / 2 Entertain Video:

The 1991 Christmas Special of the best-loved UK sitcom of its time, Only Fools and Horses: Miami Twice is a two-parter which takes Del Boy and Rodney on a transatlantic jaunt that turns out to be more than the jolly boys' excursion they'd bargained for. The action begins in Peckham, with the christening of Del's recently born child Damien. Never without an eye for the main chance, Del takes the vicar aside and outlines a scheme to save "vicar hours" and get a "nicker and a bit ahead" by "pre-blessing" lorry loads of Romanian wine he's arranged to be imported, selling them on to other clergymen. Rodney, meanwhile, has received a pensions fund rebate and Del unscrupulously engineers it so that the pair of them jet off to Miami where he looks forward to showing off his leopardskin trunks. The first part of Miami Twice is classic stuff, featuring the familiar ensemble with some vintage idiocy from Trigger and some hilarious farce involving a baby intercom. The second part, however, set in America, is a let-down, involving as it does a rather lame and far-fetched plot in which Del turns out to be the double of a local Don (an excuse for David Jason to deliver a hackneyed Godfather impersonation). A cameo from Richard Branson feels like product placement and generally the Trotters feel all at sea when off their home turf. A Christmas audience, stuffed with pudding, would have indulged this over-rich fare but there's no reason to come back for seconds. Still, it's worth it for the first 50 minutes. On the DVD: Only Fools and Horses: Miami Twice has no special features on DVD but holds up well visually, albeit unable to rid the original of blights such as a distracting burst of studio light in the first part. Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn's superb sitcom Yes, Prime Minister entered 10 Downing Street with Jim Hacker now Prime Minister of Britain, following a campaign to "Save the British Sausage". Whether tackling defence ("The Grand Design"), local government ("Power to the People") or the National Education Service, all of Jim Hacker's bold plans for reform generally come to nothing, thanks to the machinations of Nigel Hawthorne's complacent Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey (Jeeves to Hacker's Wooster) who opposes any action of any sort on the part of the PM altogether. This is usually achieved by discreet horse-trading. In "One of Us", for instance, Hacker relents from implementing defence cuts when he is presented with the embarrassingly large bill he ran up in a vote-catching mission to rescue a stray dog on an army firing range. Only in "The Tangled Web", the final episode of Series 2, does the PM at last turn the tables on Sir Humphrey. Paul Eddington is a joy as Hacker, whether in mock-Churchillian mode or visibly cowering whenever he is congratulated on a "courageous" idea. Jay and Lynn's script, meanwhile, is a dazzlingly Byzantine exercise in wordplay, wittily reflecting the verbiage-to-substance ratio of politics. Ironically, Yes, Prime Minister is an accurate depiction of practically all political eras except its own, the 1980s, when Thatcher successfully carried out a radical programme regardless of harrumphing senior civil servants. -David Stubbs.
