Review The Toxic Avenger [1985] / Prism Leisure:

The foundation stone of the Troma label's trash-movie empire, The Toxic Avenger introduces the character of nerdy janitor Melvin, who suffers heaps of abuse from local bad-guys and is stuffed into a vat of toxic waste while dressed in a ballerina outfit. He emerges mutated into a Swamp Thing/Hulk-style monster hero who romps around the blighted township of Tromaville, New Jersey, offing the grotesque villains in nastily gruesome ways and mooning over his blind true love. The Troma style is unique, and perhaps predates the anything-gross-for-a-laugh approach of the Farrelly Brothers by a good 10 years, but it sometimes wavers between the good-natured gags and genuinely unpleasant plot images that somewhat spoil the tone. Entry-level filmmaking, but with surprisingly professional head-squashing effects and a degree of enthusiasm that breaks down most resistance. Several sequels have ensued, including The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. - Kim Newman.

Review Tremors [HD DVD] [1990] [US Import] / Universal Studios:

Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunnelling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humour that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.

Sure, Street Trash has a convoluted, ridiculous plot, but it also features bums who melt into rainbow sludge upon drinking a fermented relative of Thunderbird, Tenafly Viper. In this '80s B-movie akin to The Toxic Avenger or C. H. U. D. , Fred (Mike Lackey) is the main homeless guy who distributes Viper he's lifted from the local liquor store. Once he discovers the alcohol's lethal potential, he wields it as a weapon, eventually fighting head criminal, Bronson, a psycho-killer Vietnam vet who carries a human femur bone handle knife. Side plots, such as one involving a begrudging policeman who seeks to clean up the Street Trash community housed in a junkyard, or the one featuring Wendy, the hot girl who guards runaways from the junkyard's fat, mean owner, are beside the point. Watch Street Trash for its infamous penis scene, in which a member is chopped off and tossed around in a game of keep away, or watch the film to see a man melt down into a blue pile as he's flushed down a toilet bowl. Street Trash's gore isn't so disturbing as it is comic, as are the bums' New Romantic costumes similar to Dexy's Midnight Runners in the video for their '80s hit, "Come On Eileen. [+]

Much less fun than its predecessor, this 1989 sequel starts off on a bleak note by telling us our heroes from Ghostbusters have been on the skids for five years and Bill Murray's lead character never did hook up with Sigourney Weaver's lovely symphony-musician character. What's more, she has a kid by somebody else. Everybody's on an uphill climb, and Ghostbusters II never soars the way the first film did, despite having the same director, Ivan Reitman (Dave, Kindergarten Cop). The lame plot finds the boys attempting to prevent a disaster on New York City caused by too many bad vibes in the Big Apple. Yikes! Fortunately, screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have penned enough good one-liners to keep Murray busy, and if the ghostly special effects no longer surprise as they did in Ghostbusters, they're at least inventive. - Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.
