Review Some Like It Hot [1959] / MGM Entertainment:Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant-a spot-on impersonation. ) The script by director Billy Wilder and IAL Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. [+]
Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy. " Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behaviour. The results, however, are sublime. -Robert Horton, Amazon. com.

Review Bunny Lake Is Missing / Sony CDR39329:When Ann Lake (Carol Lynley) goes to pick up four year old Bunny at her new pre-school in London, she's told that no child by that name is enrolled there. Superintendent Newhouse (Laurence Olivier) of Scotland Yard is assigned to the case. His suspects include Steven Lake (Keir Dullea) , the child's protective uncle; Horatio Wilson (Noel Coward), the Lake's decadent landlord; and Aida Ford (Martita Hunt), the school's eccentric ex-headmistress, but he soon learns that no one has actually seen the child and there is absolutely no proof that Bunny ever existed. Ann maintains the child's been kidnapped, but Newhouse begins to suspect that the hystarical young woman may just be insane. 'Bunny Lake Is Missing' is director Otto Preminger's controversial masterpiece of terror and suspense.

Review Johnny Cash - The Man, His World, His Music [1969] / Cherry Red:This has the unmistakeable whiff of opportunism about it-there is no structure, no narration, nothing by way of accompanying information, and much of the concert footage looks like it was filmed by someone whose other eye was engaged reading the instruction manual for the camera. Despite-or, just maybe, because of-these limitations, it offers some genuine revelations of its subject. And, in fairness, the concert footage that is filmed properly is marvellous. The material collected here was apparently filmed in America in the late 60s, and offers a series of snapshots of Cash on one of his famously interminable tours. He is shown playing to audiences of fans, maximum security prisoners and feather-clad Native American dignitaries, and he is shown away from the stage, playing cards on the tour bus, jamming with friends and further reinforcing his then-unfashionable interest in Native American issues with a visit to the site of the Wounded Knee massacre. Also of interest are the other performers that wander through this random travelogue: Cash's wife, June Carter Cash, duetting with him on "Jackson"; Cash's lead guitarist, Carl Perkins, taking the spotlight to sing his creation "Blue Suede Shoes"; and, best of all, Cash, grinning from ear to ear and quite unabashedly overawed, recording a glorious duet of Billy Edd Wheeler's "Blistered" with an insouciant, gum-chewing Bob Dylan. -Andrew Mueller.

Review DOCTOR WHO - ATTACK OF THE CYBERMEN VIDEO (VHS):The TARDIS is lured to Earth in 1985 by a distress call sent by Lytton, who has made contact with a group of Cybermen based in London's sewers. The Doctor and Peri are then captured and forced to take Lytton and the Cybermen in the TARDIS to the Cybermen's home planet Telos. The Cybermen have stolen a time vessel from another race and plan to change history by crashing Halley's Comet into Earth and obliterating it before it can bring about the demise of their original home world, Mondas, in 1986. Lytton is, however, a double agent employed by the Cryons - a species native to Telos. His mission is to capture the stolen time vessel, but he fails and is partially converted into a Cyberman. The Doctor is unable to save him, but manages to kill the Cyber Controller. The Cryon leader Flast sacrifices her own life and a huge explosion completely destroys the tombs.
