Review Cinderella - A Twist In Time / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Opinions remain divided on Disney's ongoing policy of making straight-to-DVD sequels to some of their classic hits, of which Cinderella: A Twist In Time is the latest example. In this particular case, it's actually a second sequel, and while it improves on the film before it, it still can't hold a torch to the original. The story this time finds the evil stepmother zipping back in time and undoing the previous work of the fairy godmother. So no slipper, no dress and Cinders with little chance of going to the ball. It's hardly original, but it still works as a neat twist, and there's a fair few ideas in Cinderella: A Twist In Time worthy of merit. What's disappointing, in common with many of Disney's new breed of sequels, is that it's so unambitious. While obviously produced to a tighter budget, there are nonetheless sparks that things are working here, tempered by a ruthless adherence to formula that holds it back. The end result is still an improvement, and it's not too bad a film. Crucially for parents, though, Cinderella: A Twist In Time is likely to easily entertain the under-tens for just over an hour, and as a result, we suspect we've not seen the back of Cinders just yet… -Jon Foster.

Review Jungle Book : 40th Anniversary Edition (Limited Edition 2 Disc Collector's Gift Set) [1967] / Walt Disney:Disney's 1967 animated feature The Jungle Book seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's original, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me". -Tom Keogh One of the very best animated films that the Walt Disney Studio has ever released (and the last to be produced by Walt Disney himself), and as downright brilliant as it was on its debut in 1967, The Jungle Book makes a very welcome return to DVD in this excellent 40th anniversary double-disc set. Based loosely on the Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, the film tells the story of man-cub Mowgli, and the friends he makes in the jungle. And it's these friends who ignite the film, with some of the most memorable characters and songs that Disney has ever put on the screen. Kings of The Jungle Book are the likes of Baloo the Bear, King Louie the villainous Shere Khan the Tiger, while supporting characters such as Colonel Hathi are just as memorable. It's astonishing that it packs so much and so many into its relatively short running time. It's an amazing achievement too that The Jungle Book bristles with such energy and fun, and that it's just as likely to enthral the current generation of youngsters as well as those of us who saw it first time round. And when those songs start playing-from Bare Necessities through to I Wanna Be Like You-it'll take some effort to not start tapping your feet. Review The Muppet Christmas Carol (1993) (Disney) [1992] / Walt Disney Home Video:Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the sombre tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough-the anarchic humour soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humour and sombre drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. -Sean Axmaker.

Review The Love Bug / Buena Vista Home Entertainment:The Love Bug is a savvy Disney hit from 1969 made a star of a Volkswagen precisely when the car was becoming more popular than ever. Dean Jones and Michele Lee head the cast in a story about a VW bug with a mind of its own. Disney-man Robert Stevenson, director of The Absent-Minded Professor, Mary Poppins, and lots of other Disney live-action hits, makes the slapstick work perfectly and keeps the laughs coming.
