Review Stuart Little 2 [2002] / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment:

A combination of modern technology and more traditional filmmaking, Stuart Little 2 is, like its predecessor, a beautifully innocent children's movie. While the likes of Shrek and Monster's, Inc. have taken human actors visually out of the picture, Stuart Little 2 is more old-fashioned in its approach and themes: the tale of a big-hearted little mouse is familiar to anyone raised on classic Disney. For those who haven't seen the first film a fairly hefty suspension of belief is required, but this is an engaging tale. Packing everything into to a succinct 70 minutes the plot is a simple story, full of heartfelt platitudes and uplifting messages. Nathan Lane adds a welcome touch of sharp humour as the voice of Snowball the cat, and Hugh Laurie and Geena Davies' portrayal of Mr and Mrs Little has a knowing edge beneath their squeaky clean exterior. It may lack the cultural suss of some of its competitors, but Stuart Little 2 is hugely recommended for those wishing to be entertained, young and old alike. On the DVD: Stuart Little 2 is an absolute visual delight, interweaving the worlds of real action and computer generation to sumptuous effect. The colours are vivid and bold, giving the film a cartoon, almost fantasy, quality that suits the feel of the story. There's a rake of extras, including several behind the scenes and technical featurettes that could possibly spoil some of the magic for younger children. [+]

Entering college is a time of great transition, but Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is secure in her plan to follow in her late-mother's footsteps and pledge Kappa Phi Nu sorority when she arrives at Southern Atlantic University. Raised by a plumber father and a host of other construction workers, the comic book collection toting Sydney is definitely her own unique person and has some decidedly tomboy tendencies that contrast starkly with the ditzy, superficial girls she meets at her first sorority function. Sorority leader and student council president Rachel (Sara Paxton) takes an instant dislike to Sydney and vows to make her rushing experience intolerable. Only Tyler (Mat Long), a member of one of the campus fraternities, seems to see and appreciate the real Sydney. After weeks of hazing abuse, Rachel declares Sydney unfit to join the sorority and a despondent Sydney joins seven misfit boys in a soon-to-be-condemned house on Greek Row known as the Vortex. Fueled by the desire for revenge and a newly discovered sense of respect and belonging thanks to her new roommates, Sydney decides to fight back against the snobbery of the Greek elite and champion the rights of all misfits on campus by running against Rachel for Student Council President. By rallying the support of interest groups and misfits campus-wide, it appears that Sydney might just have a chance of winning. This film begins with an almost gag-inducing portrayal of sorority snobbery at its worst and soon gives way to a hysterically comic look at the under-representation of the masses in collegiate society. The satirical parallel to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is heavy (this is the story of "Sydney White and the Seven Dorks" complete with Sneezy, Sleepy, and Doc) and the portrayal of interest groups on college campuses is farcical to the extreme. All in all, Sydney White is hysterically funny and surprisingly appealing to audiences of both genders and a wide age range. [+]

Kylie's back with Fever-Live in Manchester and both the budget and the bangles are bigger than 2001's Live in Sydney. This is very much a new-wave pop concert, combining the best in visual imaging, storytelling and costume design. We are offered a range of stunning Kylie-personas, from Metropolis Queen (an ingenious mechanical silver costume) for the opening "Come into My World", to Clockwork Orange-style aggression for "Spinning Around" and a hip hop-infused policewoman for "Confide in Me". Most impressive are "GBI", a stunning piece of avant-garde Japanese pop, and the electro-clash section for "Light Years". (Unfortunately there's little she can do with "Lucky", since the original is imprinted on our brains forever!) Take note, all pop star wannabes: part of Kylie's success can be attributed to her refusal to mime, and her concerts are all the better for it. The other part can be seen in the canny way she has surrounded herself with the best in the business, from her stylist to her choreographer to her stage director. If that's not enough, her stage persona is a knockout too. She easily commands the audience's attention and, despite her diminutive size, dominates the hugely elaborate set that combines stairs and movable video projections. This is as much a piece of performance art as it is a big-budget pop concert. It appears that audiences are now ready for the grown-up Kylie she wanted to give the world nearly 10 years ago. [+]
On the DVD: Kylie: Fever's special feature on the stage projections is a little dull out of context but hypnotic nonetheless: it's ideal for playing on a loop at a party! The digital programme presents the story behind each look and chapter of the concert and the documentary doesn't just focus on the lady herself, but diverts to look at the logistics and problems in creating such a visually stunning show. As you would expect from such a mixed-media production, the sound and visuals are pristine. -Nikki Disney.
