Review Eight Below [2006] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Despite a likable cast of humans, it's the canine stars who steal the show in Eight Below, a terrific live-action adventure in the time-honored Disney tradition. Based on a true story that was previously filmed (much differently) as the 1983 Japanese hit Antarctica, this above-average family film takes place in 1993 and focuses on a dog-sled guide at an Antarctic research station (Paul Walker) who is forced by a severe storm to abandon eight beloved sled dogs for the duration of a harsh Antarctic winter. Left to fend for themselves, the rugged and resourceful dogs encounter danger at every turn, surviving for nearly six months while Walker and his closest colleagues (engagingly played by Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, and American Pie's Jason Biggs) join forces to mount a daring rescue mission. Having endured similarly extreme conditions on his 1993 film Alive, director Frank Marshall brings an abundance of natural splendor (and minimum use of digital wizardry) to spectacularly arctic locations in Norway, Greenland and Canada, and Walker (star of The Fast and the Furious) lends an amiable sincerity to his compassionate role. For most viewers, however, it's the remarkable dogs (six Siberian huskies and two malamutes) who make Eight Below so thoroughly entertaining. It's not quite an instant family classic, but it comes pretty doggone close. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Swiss Family Robinson [1960] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:The Disney touch is all over this grand, colourful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family setting off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multi-level tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck it's pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film: even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and non-lethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully shot film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire co-stars as the proper, worry-prone mother. [+]

Review The Aladdin Trilogy [1992] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Aladdin Disney's 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams' improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). -Tom Keogh The Return of Jafar The Return of Jafar, the 1994, direct-to-video follow-up to Aladdin (it's actually four episodes of the Aladdin television program, back-to-back) is a wash-out compared to the Robin Williams-driven animation feature that kicked off the franchise. The story partially involves the villainous Jafar's parrot-Iago-trying to leave his master and befriend Aladdin and Jasmine. Williams is nowhere to be found, unfortunately; the genie's voice is provided by Dan Castellaneta, and the difference shows. -Tom Keogh Aladdin and the King of Thieves Robin Williams returns as the voice of the hyperactive genie in Aladdin and the King of Thieves, the second direct-to-video sequel to Disney's hit animated feature. Aladdin, the street beggar turned Prince, risks all to find his father among the cutthroat 40 thieves and joins his quest to find a Midas-like stone that turns everything it touches into gold. A significant cut above most made-for-video animation, this energetic adventure largely leaves Princess Jasmine and the genie behind for a father-and-son quest. Guest voice Jerry Orbach suggests Sean Connery with his thick-as-molasses delivery as the master thief Sa'luk and, despite his limited screen time, Williams once again delights with his wild flights of fantasy as the big blue Genie. Review Santa Clause 3 : The Escape Clause [2006] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:The third entry in this popular series of festive family comedies, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause brings Tim Allen back as Scott Calvin, a man who has to juggle his family life with a dual role as Santa. This time, there's a newborn in the offing, an invite to his in-laws and a house full of people all ready to enjoy the festive season. What could go wrong? Well naturally things don't quite go to plan, as entering stage left is Martin Short as Jack Frost, who has plans of his own for the Christmas season. Thus, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause sees Scott Calvin and his family continuing to try and keep Christmas on schedule, whilst trying to foil the antics of Mr Frost, sticking closely to the formula that's made this franchise a hit in the process. It's hardly surprising that there's nothing radically different about The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, but then that's hardly the point. This is a very much an easy holiday crowd-pleaser, that bundles in solid family entertainment and a good number of chuckles across its running time. It's worked for the series before, and it works again here, proving to be a welcome seasonal treat, and a fitting third part of a very family-friendly trilogy. Roll on Christmas! -Jon Foster.

Review Homeward Bound [1993] / Walt Disney Home Video:Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, Homeward Bound, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets-Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat-survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Treasure Island [1950] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Strap on your pantaloons and prepare to travel with Jim Hawkins and Blind Pew to one of the most famous fictional islands in history, Treasure Island. Walt Disney's 1950 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece has held up extremely well, with action and characterisations that feel freshly minted (although it's unlikely that the Mouse of today would sanction the high level of booze flowing throughout the picture). Great fun, with nary a wasted frame and, in the character of Robert Newton's much-imitated Long John, one of cinema's most boisterously crowd-pleasing villains ever. (Proving that you can't keep a good-er, bad man down, Newton would return with director Byron Haskins for the enjoyable sequel, Long John Silver. ) Watching this classic is like having a flashback to some perfect Technicolor childhood. -Andrew Wright.

Review Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban [2004] / Warner Home Video:Adapted from JK Rowling's third novel, this installment of the family fantasy adventure story finds trainee wizard Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and his best friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint), facing the dangerous convict Sirius Black (played by Gary Oldman). Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison and is on his way to Hogwarts, so the school calls in supernatural assistance in the form of Dementors - but will they turn out to be a great help or a further threat? The first of the Harry Potter films to be directed by acclaimed Mexican film director Alfonso Cuarón, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is generally regarded as the most stylised and darkest entry in the series thus far. It stars the actors from the preceding films in the series, except for the role of Albus Dumbledore, which sees Michael Gambon take over from the late Richard Harris. Much of the original crew also returned, including screenwriter Steve Kloves. The film broke several opening records around the world upon its release, including the top opening film in UK film history, and made approximately £20m in its first three days, totaling £90. 3m in ten days.

Review Transformers [HD DVD] [2007] / Paramount Home Entertainment:How do you like your blockbuster movies? If the answer's loud, fast and full of big robots fighting, then you're well and truly in luck. For director Michael Bay's take on Transformers, based on the toys of the same name, delivers just that. And with some style. The film stars the fast-rising Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) as Sam, who discovers that his first car has a little more to it when it transforms into an Autobot robot called Bumblebee. Fortunately, the Autobots are the good guys, and following not far behind are a good number more, headed up by Optimus Prime. Against them are the less friendly Decepticons, with Megatron at the helm, and the two sides are set for a frenetic battle right in the middle of Planet Earth. There's a plot sitting underneath all of this, but it's pretty much given with the Transformers movie that it's just a vehicle to get the film from one set piece to another. And there's little denying that the action sequences are spectacular. Boasting quite staggering special effects, the on-screen action moves with a pace and ferocity that sometimes makes it hard just to keep up with it all, as mighty robots engage is some quite staggering fights. It's quite an achievement. [+]
Paving the way for an already-in-production sequel, Transformers has little pretensions about what it's going to do, and is all the better for it. This is a film about big robots, big fights, big effects and, ultimately, big, dumb grin-inducing fun. What, really, is there not to like? -Jon Foster.

Review Hannah Montana: One In A Million [2007] / Disney:Human relationships are complicated regardless of whether you're young or old, or looking for love or friendship. When Miley's dad (Billy Ray Cyrus) and Lilly's mum (Heather Locklear) are attracted to one another in "Lilly's Mom Has Got It Goin' On," Miley (Miley Cyrus) and Lilly (Emily Osment) can barely contain their excitement, but an argument over who pays the bill raises the issue of sexism and puts an end to the romance. Jealousy threatens to tear apart the working relationship between Miley and Robbie Ray when The Jonas Brothers ask Robbie to write a song for them and Miley gets worried that her dad will like working with the guys better than working with her. A longstanding family feud between Miley's Mamaw Ruthie (Vicki Lawrence) and her Aunt Dolly (Dolly Parton) ruins the biggest night of Hannah Montana's life when she receives the International Music Award for "Best Female Artist" and the two most important women in her life can't seem to put aside their differences long enough to celebrate Hannah's accomplishment. Finally, professional and personal rivalry causes some serious ugliness between Mikayla (Selena Gomez) and Hannah Montana that affects both girls' reputations and their relationships with Jake. Funny thing is, Miley and Mikayla actually turn out to be pretty good friends. Throughout all four episodes, Jackson (Jason Earles) and Rico (Moises Arias) clash over everything from management style to business amenities, personal hygiene, and how each can best achieve his own notoriety. Bonus features include music videos "One in a Million" and "True Friend," a "Come Feud With Me" segment with Jackson narrating the ten top television feuds, and the Raven episode "Run Raven Run" in which Raven and Alana compete for the attentions of the newly transformed Devon Carter (Lil'J). -Tami Horiuchi.
