Review Mickey's House Of Villains [2002] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Mickey's House of Mouse Villains seeks to do for Halloween what Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse (2001) did for Yuletide. It's an anthology set on Halloween in the titular house, a nightclub where characters-including Donald Duck, Goofy, Jafar, Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook-gather to watch Disney cartoons. There's a perfunctory framing plot with the villains taking over the House, but the 65 minutes is almost entirely filled by eight short cartoons. Five are very recent, with clinically clean computer animation, and three are vintage gems glowing with the warm detailed look of Golden Age Disney. These are Trick or Treat (1952), Donald Duck and the Gorilla (1944), and Lonesome Ghosts (1937), in which Mickey, Donald and Goofy star in what was surely the inspiration for Ghostbusters. The best of the new adventures is Mickey's Mechanical House, in which the mouse moves into a futuristic house which goes disastrously wrong. It's made all the more entertaining by a poetic rhyming narration delivered by John Cleese. Young children will love it all, while older fans may prefer a compilation of vintage Disney shorts. On the DVD: Mickey's House of Mouse Villains DVD contains a well-designed animated quiz game, "Wheel of Misfortune", that should entertain young fans for a while. Otherwise, the extras consist of three trailers and a "Fright Reel": a three-minute compilation of Disney clips with two Dolby Digital 5. [+]
1 soundtracks. The choice amounts to the same sound effects with or without music. The sound is good, except for the three vintage animations, which are in mono. The picture is 4:3 and is generally very sharp, though varies a little with the source material. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Sleeping Beauty [1958] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty was the studio's most ambitious effort to date, a lavish spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapted from the music of Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her sixteenth birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Fortunately, some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are on hand to assist. It's not really all that much about the title character-how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here, alongside Malificent's castle, which, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. -David Kronke, Amazon. com.

Disney’s huge hit franchise of the moment never has, and perhaps never will, see the inside of a cinema. But given the millions upon millions of followers across the globe, the DVD release of High School Musical 2 will nonetheless rival the sales of any blockbuster you care to mention. And why shouldn’t it? Grounded firmly in the family spirit that classic Disney movies are renowned for, High School Musical 2 isn’t the most radical movie you’re ever likely to see, but it’s had few recent rivals where outright fun is concerned. The plot this time sees Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Chad, Taylor and Sharpay in the midst of organising a talent competition during their school holidays, which proves all the excuse the film needs to bring on the musical entertainment. Packed in with insanely addictive tunes, and playing very firmly to its fan base, it’s hard not to conclude that High School Musical 2 is a success. What’s more, there’s immense re-spin potential to the disc, and, given the raging success of the first movie, this one too is set to be enjoyed time and time again. An entertaining amalgam of the Transformers toy line, 1980s animated series and the live-action film by Michael Bay, Transformers Animated: Transform and Roll Out updates the venerable robot warriors without losing their core appeal to younger viewers. Sold as a feature film but actually the first three episodes of the Transformers Animated TV series, Transform and Roll Out re-imagines the Autobots as a misfit crew led by an untested Optimus Prime (voiced by David Kaye), who find the Allspark (the key to the Transformers' power) while clearing the way for a space bridge. The discovery brings the Decepticons on their trail, and the five Autobots (who include Bumblebee, Ratchet, Bulkhead and Prowl) decide to cool their jets for a half-century in Lake Erie. The action flashes forward when the Allspark is found by young Sari Sumdac (Tara Strong), whose scientist dad Isaac (Tom Kenney) is having some trouble with his robotic experiments, namely a monstrous cyber-cockroach that threatens Detroit. The heroes come to the rescue of humanity, but their actions also bring the villainous Starscream (also Kenney) to Earth for a crowd-pleasing Autobot-Decepticon showdown. As with any revival of an established and well-loved storyline, there's much to quibble over in Transformers Animated-there are fewer players on the board (though the number of Transformers increases over the course of the series), and the change in the characters' origins may raise some hackles among longtime fans (the manic Sari may also be an acquired taste). But as pure rock-em-sock-em action, Transformers Animated delivers the goods, which should satisfy newcomers to the Transformers' world, and also displays a welcome sense of humour. The latter gets a fun showcase in the two animated shorts which make up the DVD extras, the best of which pits Optimus Prime against an inquisitive classroom of children. -Paul Gaita.

Review Dumbo (1941) (Disney) [1942] / Walt Disney Home Video:

A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast.
