Review Snow Buddies [2008] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:The Buddies puppies (Air Buddies) have been a great team since birth and now that Buddha, Mudbud, Rosebud, Budderball, and B'Dawg have all been adopted by various well-matched families throughout Fernfield Washington, they've each developed a comfortable routine with their new owners. After being chastised by Ms. Mittens (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg) for chasing her kitten, B'Dawg and the rest of the Buddies meet up in the park for a game of ball, but Budderball leads them astray after spotting a truck full of ice cream. What none of them expects after their all-you-can-eat ice cream binge is that they will soon end up parachute dropped into Ferntiuktuk Alaska with what's left of the ice cream shipment. After a night spent alone in a strangely white and very cold world, they are befriended by a young husky dog named Shasta (voiced by Dylan Sprouse) whose young owner Adam (Dominic Scott Kay) wants nothing more in life than to assemble a sled dog team and compete in a dogsled race across Alaska. Assuming that the Buddies are the answer to Adam's prayers for a sled dog team, Shasta convinces the Buddies to race and enlists the legendary sled dog Talon (voiced by Kris Kristofferson) to train them all while Adam pours over his father's old sledding journal and single-handedly constructs a sled that's the perfect size for him and his team. Adam secretly enters the race against his father's wishes and thus begins a perilous, but exhilarating journey that teaches everyone involved a lot about teamwork, faith, and the importance of helping others. While many aspects of this film are completely unbelievable, the talking Buddies are adorable, the plot is significantly improved over the movie's predecessor Air Buddies, and the wholesome message will appeal to children and adults alike. -Tami Horiuchi.

Review Tuck Everlasting [2002] / Walt Disney Home Video:With the makings of a classic, Disney's Tuck Everlasting is loosely but respectfully adapted from Natalie Babbitt's beloved children's book. This appealing fable focuses on the timeless Tuck family, blessed-and cursed-with immortality after drinking from a magical spring. Hiding their secret over passing decades, they are discovered in 1914 by Winnie (Alexis Bledel)-the only daughter of stern, upper-crust socialites-who encounters the life-affirming Jesse Tuck (Jonathan Jackson) and grows enchanted with his family (Sissy Spacek, William Hurt, Scott Bairstow) while her parents fear she's been kidnapped. The film's teenage romance is invented (Winnie is younger in Babbitt's book), but it's charmingly appropriate, and Ben Kingsley is perfect as a menacing man of mystery. Scoring a solid follow-up to his equally enjoyable My Dog Skip, director Jay Russell turns Tuck Everlasting into a magical plea for living life to its fullest. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Life Size [2000] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Unhappy and lonely after her mother's death, Casey (Lindsay Lohan) attempts to resurrect her mother, but a minor mishap changes the results of her spell and brings an unwanted doll named Eve (Tyra Banks) to life instead. Eve is elated when she first encounters the smells and flavours of real life, but is shocked to realize that she's not the perfect role model she's always considered herself to be. Casey initially despises Eve-she never wanted this doll in the first place and now she's ruined her chances of bringing her mother back to life. But as Eve grows, she brings out the best in Casey, encouraging her to renew old friendships and spurring personal growth and healing. Even Casey's father (Jere Burns) rises above his grief and builds a better relationship with his daughter as a result of his interaction with Eve. This is an entertaining, 89-minute video that juxtaposes the stresses and disappointments of the real world, with their accompanying potential for personal growth, against what initially appears to be a stereotypically idyllic world. What makes the movie powerful is its suggestion that that ideal world is inherently flawed. Performances by Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), supermodel Tyra Banks (Higher Learning), and Jere Burns (US television's Something So Right) are very good. The story, while based on a fairly unreal premise, successfully explores some very real issues facing kids today. -Tami Horiuchi.

Review The Sword In The Stone [1963] / Walt Disney Home Video:As far as Disney is concerned, The Sword in the Stone was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upstaging storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. Based on TH White's beloved novel The Once and Future King, this Disney version chronicles King Arthur's boyish adventures. There's much to enjoy here as coach Merlin the magician shows the young Arthur, nicknamed Wart, the skills that will help him become the future ruler of the Britons. The transformation sequences, where the boy is turned into a fish, a bird and a squirrel are vintage Disney. The oft-repeated scene of Merlin battling it out with mean old Madame Mim still is worth a few chuckles, but it underlines the problem with most of the film-most of its scenes are only played for laughs. References by Merlin to television and other items of modern life also mar the generally innocuous landscape. Younger children will like it, while older kids will find it slower compared with recent Disney films. -Keith Simanton, Amazon. com.

Review Pinocchio : Special Edition [1940] / Walt Disney Home Video:This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it's unlikely that we'll see such forceful narrative in a kids' cartoon ever again. Disney's treatment of Collodi's story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie's success is derived from its liberal use of the kind of imagery no children's film-maker would even attempt to get past the storyboard stage today-a mysterious island where children smoke cigars, get drunk and turn into donkeys, a monstrous, malicious sea-creature which is devoid of any trace of cuddliness and a pair of villains who routinely abduct children, to give just a few examples-the characters are depicted with the finest attention to detail, most of the songs have become classics in their own right ("When You Wish Upon a Star" being only one of many) and the graceful, stylised animation positively glows with fine detail. Essential family viewing. -Roger Thomas.

Review Tarzan 2 / Walt Disney Home Video:Whereas the original Tarzan tells the story of a man raised by gorillas who learns to bring together the human and animal worlds, Tarzan 2 is a prequel, of sorts, focusing on a chapter from Tarzan's childhood where he realizes he is not an ape and sets out to discover his true identity. The young misfit runs away from his loving mother, Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), and wanders up the Dark Mountain to come face to face with the monstrous Zugor. But all is not serious in this 72-minute boondoggle; there is Disney's usual foray into frivolity by way of a few wisecracking sidekicks-a couple of gorilla brothers named Uto and Kago, and their nettlesome Mama Gunda (voiced by Estelle Harris, a laudable choice). Despite the star-studded voice cast, there is a sense of re-tread ground here, and the story (loosely based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' distinctive tale) shows signs of formulaic Disney. Nonetheless, Phil Collins' trio of original songs livens the pace to make the effort a short-lived smile. (Ages 6 to 14) -Lynn Gibson, Amazon. com.

Review Wish Gone Amiss [2007] / Disney:It's common knowledge that wishing on a shooting star guarantees a wish come true, but Miley Stewart (Hannah Montana), Cory (Cory in the House), and Zack and Cody (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) are about to find out that impulsive wishes often result in unintended consequences in Wish Gone Amiss. The ever-scheming Cory wishes himself into the presidency in "Gone Wishin'" only to discover that the responsibilities of the Presidency are enormous, especially when robotic aliens threaten to replace all of his cabinet members and take over the world. Miley Stewart's wish that she could leave her secret identity behind and be Hannah Montana all the time lands Hannah in the lap of luxury, but the cost to her family's individual and collective happiness is huge. Zack and Cody wish themselves into superheroes, but soon find out that with super powers come evil villains like Moseby the "Meanager" and super responsibilities. Each of these three fantastical episodes relies on a heavy dose of the comically ridiculous for maximum entertainment, while offering an important message about responsibility and an appreciation of one's own circumstances. -Tami Horiuchi.
